Langan Park (Municipal Park), is a 720-acre park in Mobile, Alabama, where Springhill Ave. ends and…read moreZeigler Blvd. Begins. The park offers numerous recreational activities, such as disc golf, playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails. It encompasses the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile Botanical Gardens, and Playhouse in the Park. In addition, the park features tennis courts (the Mobile Tennis Center), and athletic fields for baseball and softball. Langan Park is also a popular spot for outdoor concerts and family outings. Many of the trees are labeled by genus and species. Plus, there is a large body of water that harbors the natural habitat for many birds, insects and other aquatic life. The 2.5 mile diameter sidewalk in the park is perfect for walking or running; though, It is not good for rollerskating in-line skating or skateboarding. Mostly because the mandatory crevices in the sidewalk are too wide (in some places) for the small wheels to navigate them safely. Seemingly, The maintenance crew does not keep the sidewalk very clear from debris. This could seriously injure a skateboarder or roller skater. It (a nasty fall from debris on the sidewalk) has happened to me twice already in the last six months. Minus 1 star for maintenance. Otherwise I completely enjoy walking in the park

This park has a lot. Always clean, litter free, pet friendly, great for kids, families, couples, etc. Tons of wildlife: ducks, geese, fish, turtles, rabbits, squirrels, an occasional alligator sighting in the lake areas (warm weather usually). Every time I come here, I always find something cool or new that keeps me coming back. Safe, there is a police station and military reserve located in the park near the museum. Directly across Ziegler Blvd from Mobile Japanese Gardens.

Being an adventurist and liking the challenge of playing new courses, I decided to make the 90 mile drive to give it a try. It turned out to be a very good decision, as this course has a lot to offer, especially in the use of the natural landscape to create many hazards and challenges. The park is located just a few miles from Keesler Air Force Base and there's actually base housing that butts right up to the park. The park appears to have been around for quite some time as there are a lot of mature cypress, oak and pines trees. There's also a lot of thick vegetation / brush lining some of the fairways and surrounding the baskets that makes hunting for your disc on an errant throw quite challenge. Water comes into play on a lot of holes, as there are salty / brackish fingerer lakes that extend from the Gulf of Mexico into the park. I don't recommend wading in for a disc as the brackish water is very murky and you can't tell what's beneath the surface. I like the fact that nearly every hole offers three different tee boxes (white, red & blue). We played the red every time, as it offered concrete tee pads and appeared to be the intermediate distance, as compared to the blue pro tees. The best way to review this course, to me, would be to describe all 21 holes. Hole 1 is right next to the pavilion/gazebo and forces you to throw over an arm of the bay onto a basket that's well protected. Throw left and you'll hit a tree and into the water. Fade right and your disc is going down faster than the Titanic. Hole 2 fades so far to the right that you can't see the basket, which is placed right at the edge of a wooded patch that will eat your disc for lunch. Hole 3 crosses a narrow creek that forces me to lay up for fear of hitting the water. There's also a lot of low lying branches over the water. Hole 4 crosses a dry creek and fades right to a basket near a bridge and a cluster of oak trees. Hole 5 was hard to find without a map and is actually in a tunnel of trees. If you cannot throw straight, keep a good eye on your disc as it ricochets on the pine trees like a pinball. Hole 6 is shaped like a horseshoe and bends endlessly to the left. Hole 7's mando forces you to throw through a narrow gap of trees to enter a short fairway that veers sharply to the right. Hole 8 is fairly straight and open and crosses another dry creek bed. Hole 9 fades slightly to the right through a cluster of large mature pine trees. The basket sits in front of a steel cable that separates the course from one of the park's parking lots. Beware of the thick brush to the right, as I have gone in to retrieve a disc and it is unforgiving. Hole 10 forces you to throw across another finger of the bay. The basket lies to the far right, so if you fade at all, you will go in the drink. Beware of the lone power line in front of the tee box that has been known to snag a few discs and cause them to drop into the water. Hole 11 is bordered by tennis courts to the right and a road to the left. The is another finger of the bay that opens up to the right . Unless you have a big arm, I recommend laying up and throwing at the basket from a 12 foot high perch. Hole 12 forces you to cross the water to get back to the tee box and punishes you with a technical throw protected by water and thick disc snagging trees. Hole 13 fades left with some trees to negotiate. Hole 14, I cannot recall and will update after I play my next round here. ;-( Hole 15 looks like an "ess" curve on a race track and features another water crossing and yet more trees. Hole 16, I cannot recall and will update after I play my next round here. ;-( Hole 17 drives across a long open field to a basket near the road to the right. Hole 18 requires a short walk and is nearly another tunnel of trees, but not quite as thick. The basket is well protected and requires a strong hook to the left and good accuracy. Hole 19 throws back near the tee box of 18 and has a lot of ricochet potential through the dense tree coverage. Hole 20 has you throwing back to the road near the pavilion / gazebo near hole 1. Hole 21 is a short hole. But throw too far and you are in the shrubbery. Throw too high and you may clear the shrubbery and end up in the bay. Overall, this is a very enjoyable course and I can see it easily becoming a favorite of mine. For New Orleanians, it's a little far, but definitely worth the drive.

The course is open, but it has some elevation and makes use of a few copses of trees to good effect in order to create a quick yet interesting course. Typically I would simply play the 9 holes twice to get in a full 18 holes, but the past few months the town has been quickly developing a swath of land across the street from the front 9 and the back 9 is almost ready to go. Tee pads are in (except for a little confusion on the direction of the pad on 14) and 7 of 9 holes have baskets up and are ready for play. The front 9 has only a single par 4 (hole 7), but the back 9 has 3 par 4s (holes 11, 13, 15). There are signs up showing the lie of the hole and distance on the front 9 and I expect the back 9 will get signs eventually too. There is a paved walking/jogging path that runs completely around the front 9 and runs out along the right side of the course on the back 9. In addition there is a pavillion with a picnic table and areas designated to be 'recreation areas' that have yet to be developed. The grass is often mowed and the course well maintained. The ground can be kinda spongy and sandy in places, and watching where you step around some of the holes should keep you from stepping in an ant mound. All in all, it's my favorite course in the Mobile area and keeps me driving across the causeway nearly every other weekend.

However, the course itself left me feeling a little disappointed, especially since I made a 2 hour drive for a day trip and was not staying overnight. My 3 star review is on the very generous side as this is a borderline 2.0 -2.5 stars were it not for the great scenery of the park and the potential that is still there for an above average course. It would have been helpful if the park had signage directing you to the course (hole 1), but we had to drive aimlessly through the park until we finally saw the "Desert Fox" sign. According to the I-Phone app "U-Disc", the course has 23 holes, as is reflected by the electronic scorecard. However, we only found 18 holes and this was confirmed by the map we printed and actually playing the course. I highly recommend using a map, as the path from hole to hole is not always entirely clear. I think the old course design had 23 holes; prior to the addition of the 9 hole Little fox course. The first thing I noticed when we started (02/07/2015) was that the level of the lake was very low. Hole # 1 had a nice downhill shot with the basket being near the lake. Be careful of the water's edge, as even though I did not throw in the water, the ground under my feet was extremely soft and I was sinking a little. Note to self to only play this course wearing old shoes, as there is a huge potential to get them muddy and/or wet. Hole # 2 feature a slight uphill that we had to play through a smokescreen, as the park regularly burns pine needles and leaves to keep the undergrowth at bay. Note to self to bring an extra towel to wipe the soot off my disc from all the recently burned areas on multiple fairways and greens. Several holes have multiple tees (pro tee & amateur tee) to offer a bit more of a challenge. The baskets are showing their age and many are a bit rusty. However, the chains were all intact and functioned properly. Hole # 4 is the signature hole and usually throws out to a small peninsula. However, with the water being so low, my throw was over a vast expanse of smelly, shoe swallowing, disc grabbing mud. Note to self to always bring my 18 foot telescopic pole to retrieve discs from water and/or mud. The park's huge lake comes into play on multiple holes as it borders fairways, pins, forces water carry (when water is not low), and emphasizing precise disc placement. I actually enjoyed the wood sections that forced you to throw within a narrow corridor of trees. Any off target shots were immediately punished with ricochets off of trees and/or discs entangled in thick blood drawing briars. All in all it was a good day, and if I ever found myself camping here, I would be sure to play this course again. However, I don't foresee any road trips here solely for the purpose of playing this mediocre course.
