It is one of the most centrally located street markets in London. The market mainly caters for local residents and the office population in the immediate Victoria Street area, selling food, groceries, books and clothing, but is becoming increasingly popular with tourists. My wife and I visited the Strutton Ground Market while we were on a trip to London in April 2019. We had just visited Westminster Abbey down the street, and my wife told me about a great street market that we could stop at for lunch. She had studied abroad in London and knew her way around the city pretty well. There were so many delicious-sounding food vendors that we had trouble picking. I decided to order from a Middle Eastern food vender called Falafel Zaki Zaki. I ordered "The Whole Shebang Wrap" which was stuffed with falafel, eggplant (aubergine), salad, hot peppers, pickled vegetables and white sauce. Just as I was about to take a picture of the delicious wrap, the vendor posed for the shot and had me cracking up. That wrap was so good!! My wife found a cool Indian street food vendor and ordered some Samosas and a side of Chicken with Rice. We ended up sharing all of our food and were very happy with our choices. We'll definitely stop again on our next trip to London.

When a regular customer came in with his dog, Molly, the business owner sliced some meat and served it to Molly. It was obvious that while much of his business was probably transitory, he took the time to get to know his customers, even the K-9's. Oh yeah, and the latte was pretty good too!

The market area is mostly covered by tall ceiling structures, giving a small reprieve if it's raining, but it has an open air feel. What's funny about this market is that you can find local options or favorites from back home. There's a shake shack right in the center of the market, but you can find smaller craft eateries spread around. There are also different places to get a cup of hot mulled wine or hot chocolate and you'll find the long lines for Ben's cookies nearby! If you are coming to Covent Garden via the tube, know that this tube station is a wreck! It's incredibly busy and unless you want to walk up an endless flight of stairs, you'll need to wait and pack in like sardines into the elevator.

Also, it's a real local kind of place - no tourists here, just people going about their weekend shopping. And, I feel all down-home, banjo-strumming good when I go there. It's not exactly a wealthy part of town though (read - not at all) so if that doesn't speak to you, stick to Borough market, but I think East Street is a winner. And, all the workers in the stands are friendly. They call me 'love' and darlin' and 'sweetheart.' and it tickles me delighted, like overpriced Elmo dolls. Final grade? A+.
