Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club - BYSC's Final Friday sunset for May 2014.

We're big on boating of all kinds and always want to know where the best places might be to keep a boat, have some fun amenities available and to meet some like-minded friends. We were very impressed with the facilities here which were nicely thought out and minus the snooty attitude found at some yachts clubs. Although there are no slips for boats (slips being our preference), the moorings are such that it would be easy enough to get out to one's boat. There are tennis courts here, a nice sized pool, kayaks and canoes for club members to use if you don't have your own, and a very attractive clubhouse with bar. Seems like the club hosts all kinds of events too which is something our current yacht club offers and that we appreciate. It's a great way to meet people. We were given the grand tour by one of the owners, an extremely affable man by the name of Milledge, who coincidentally told us he left SC for a time to live in Massachusetts but wisely returned home to run this terrific family owned facility. This is a yacht club with the feel of being a summer camp for grown-ups. The boating season is long in SC which is part of the draw for us; it's so relatively short here in New England. We loved the vibe, we loved the views and the amenities are very much desirable to us. This seems to be the kind of place we are looking for. When the time comes, this just might be the place we join.

Saturday dinner is great. Dockside helpers don't seem to have read the launching instructions handed out to competitors though. When you follow what the instructions in the competitors packet says, the dock master bitches at you for not doing things they way he thinks they should be done. Other than that, it's a nice club.

The water way wasn't anything amazing, but being from FL and having our estuaries it takes a lot to impress. The equipment was in great shape and prices are fair.

They have vacation rentals ranging from condo's to houses with 1-8 bedrooms. It's a nice variety of places to choose on the island to stay. Fripp Island is a private secluded area. You do have to go though a security check point to enter. If you fish, play golf, tennis, or just want relaxation, this is the place to come. It's definitely a lot different from Myrtle Beach. There are 3,000 acres of natural beauty. The island is designated as a Wildlife Sanctuary. There are tons of wildlife on the island. There are 175 different species of birds, deer and alligators also. The deer are running free on the island. Some of them will even come up to you but they recommend not feeding them. You will need an amenity card to enjoy your vacation. The card gives you privileges for dining, golf, golf cart rental, swimming pools, tennis courts, bicycles, mopeds, kayaks and canoes. If you book your trip directly through Fripp Island, they will include the card. My favorite restaurant there is Bonita Boathouse at the marina. It's got some amazing seafood. There's also a great ice cream shop on the island. I recommend you bring your own groceries. The nearest grocery store is about 20 minutes away in Beaufort. Several movies have been filmed on Fripp Island: Scenes from Prince of Tides, The Jungle Book, and Forrest Gump. Beautiful scenery. In the summer they also offer a special kids camp. Bring your lounge chairs and come on and try this place out! It's great for a little Rest and Relaxation.

I live in a tourist town in Florida so it's annoying but part of life in paradise. I guess the entrance fee covers your parking because it's all free once you pass the guard gates, all that's required is luck finding a space within a reasonable walking distance, I got lucky today being someone was pulling out just as I arrived at the preferred parking lot a stones throw from the pier. The pier is well constructed and offers some great views and a covered sitting area at the end. There are plenty of charter businesses that run parallel to the pier and a number of placards describing some of the local bird and sea inhabitants. I always spend some time on the local piers when visiting different areas they all seem to offer a few moments of serenity. There is also a walking beach close by that looks like it offers some shelling opportunities but today that option looks limited, I'm sure most visitors grab a few free souvenirs from here. It's a must do while visiting Harbour Town and this alone is worth the price of admission when considering the parking is free...

We checked it out, took our pictures, and moved along. I think the Daufuskie Island Ferry might stop here, but certainly any number of harbor (harbour?) cruises depart and return from here.
