Pop Quiz: Where can I get a three course lunch prepared by aspiring Michelin star chefs for under…read more$10? Answer: Ocean County Vocational - Technical School in Brick. Perhaps this is common knowledge in the neighboring senior communities among the early bird special crowd, but it's a new discovery for me after having lived in Brick over twelve years. There's a culinary school at OCVTS in their Brick location. During the school year, they offer lunch from 11:30 to 2:30 I believe from Wednesday to Friday. So I stopped by yesterday to check it out. Apparently each day they have a theme. Yesterday it was Southern /Cajon. For my appetizer, I ordered the a chicken and andouille sausage gumbo, which was redolent with the flavor of the dark tan roux and was well seasoned, and to my surprise, mildly (for me) spiced even before I added the Tabasco sauce. It was a well made gumbo. I initially ordered the fried chicken entre, which came with collard greens and mac and cheese. I love collard greens and these were well prepared, as was the mac and cheese (To be honest, mac and cheese is a dish that you have to go out of your way to screw up.). However, the fried chicken was not as deftly prepared. Granted, it was three huge pieces of chicken, the size of my head (I can see why this place is popular with the senior crowd). First, it was was smothered in gravy. Now, that's not really a critism in itself, but I don't like anything on the chicken after it's fried so it stays crispy. But as soon as I put the fork into the thigh piece the entire breading seemed to slide off. Apparently they have to revisit frying 101, as do ssooo many commercial cooks. Realizing that this is a school, I felt bad sending it back, but I really wanted to enjoy the meal. So ignoring the Italian tradition of not eating fish with cheese, I ordered the blackened catfish with a Parmesan breading crust. The fish was well cooked, but the crust was overly salty. The meal was rounded out with chocolate rice pudding (now that's thinking out of the box!) that was very good. All through the meal I had unlimited refills of their excellent home brewed ice tea and some good coffee at the end Total tab $ 7.00, not including tip. How can you beat that? There were a few hiccups as I've pointed out. I wasn't pulling my punches because it's a school. But, for around the price of a happy meal you get great quality freshly prepared food served with cloth napkins. Next time I'm doing errands in Brick and want a bite for lunch, it's not gonna be pizza.

He looks forward to gardening, dance parties and art projects. His overall growth has also jumped leaps and bounds from when he first started last year. So much so we extended his hours from half to full day! We also LOVE that the classes are small & the teachers build a close relationship w/ every child. Touring other schools was quite scary seeing kids screaming and overwhelmed staff. I can assure you Peppermint Tree is not and never will be that way! You also have a built in Summer Camp w/ 2 pools to accommodate all age groups. Did I mention swimming lessons, class trips, gardening, ice cream days, etc? All those things are either part of class or an option to add on. So if you are on the fence about where or if you are going to enroll your child, Peppermint Tree is definitely the Best Choice!

If I had to rate the school overall, it would be a 1. ONLY because he had about 3 teachers I…read moreactually liked and so did he. There were only three teachers that he would not cry for. He started the school at 17 months and went on and off until he was 4. In MY OPINION the director should not be working with children because she has no personality and is rude. The owner has a god complex and allows prayer in her school without knowledge to the parents. She called me about a post on MY private facebook page regarding that and informed me it was her school and she can do whatever she wants. She actually called and yelled at me! And then when asked how she saw it she told me it wasn't important. I cant help but wonder is she promoting teaching our kids to not be forthcoming as well?I saw a younger teacher grab a student and throw him into the chair for not keeping his shoes on. I went to the owner whose response was "that doesn't sound like her." One day at drop off I heard my sons teacher telling another child (age 2) to tell his mother to stop sending breakfast because breakfast time was over. He was 2!!! The school always smells like urine. Totally outdated. It was never the same teacher from drop off to pick up and there was NEVER a daily sheet. I never had any idea how his day went. I got a call one day from the school to pick my son up he was running a fever. When I got there he was sleeping. I asked the teacher how long he slept and she told me "he woke up for a minute screaming and woke up the entire class." Was she kidding me? I saw a picture of my son on the wall one day in the class with a random jacket on, when I asked they said it was pulled from lost and found!! HE HAD HIS OWN COAT!!!! I was disgusted. Most of the teachers have zero certification and are literally pulled off the street. I know this because I personally know one the teachers and she has no training and has popped pain killers while on the clock. The owner talks down to everyone and is extremely condescending., She seems to think we all work for her, when in reality... you work for the parents and children that pay and trust you. I strongly recommend searching for another school. My son is now in a school that we absolutely love. It was a blessing in disguise that MY post landed in her hands. I strongly recommend checking the schools public reports, which they have received derogatory marks for because a teacher didn't know how many students she had on the playground as well as others. Better schools are out there!

The owner's foster son hit my daughter and encouraged a younger foster child to hit my younger daughter as well. As a parent, seeing one child encourage another to join in against my child was extremely upsetting and made me feel like my daughters were being ganged up on. What concerned me just as much was the response when I brought it to the owner's attention. I felt the behavior was brushed off and treated as normal childhood behavior rather than being taken seriously. I understand that conflicts can happen between children, but I expect a daycare to provide a safe environment and to respond appropriately when physical aggression occurs. Because of both the incident itself and the way it was handled, I no longer felt comfortable leaving my children in their care and decided to withdraw them.
