There is no guarantee of great customer service anywhere. But the apparent free fall in customer…read moreservice at A & B Naturals stings. For years, this store has been an oasis of good vibes, healthy food and employees who seemed genuinely aligned around better food, better health, better community and a better kind of commerce -- one that puts people and community first. What I experienced in mid-July 2026 felt more like the customer service I'd expect from a cranky big-city bodega employee pushing scratch tickets, vodka nips, cigarettes and herbal Viagra at the register. I'm a longtime, loyal A & B Naturals shopper. But maybe not anymore. I recently learned that more than $300 in receipts I had carefully saved for redemption through the store's loyalty program are now worthless. I always liked being able to redeem old receipts for a modest discount on future purchases. Apparently, that program changed during the dead of winter. Under the new rules, only receipts from the same calendar year can be redeemed. As a 20-plus-year summer resident of MDI, maybe I missed the 2025 messaging. I assume there was some warning. But the change landed harshly for someone like me who had saved receipts in good faith. What bothers me is that A & B Naturals apparently gave longtime (summertime) customers no grace period or soft landing -- no window to redeem older receipts before making them worthless. It feels abrupt and unnecessarily unfriendly to loyal shoppers. But that alone wouldn't bring my review down to two stars. What really gets my goat is how ONE employee treated me when I expressed disappointment about the change. Let me be clear: I love the A & B Naturals staff. Most are salt of the earth. They represent a diversity I celebrate, and they are a big reason I've shopped there for years. The nutritionist, in particular, is amazing -- knowledgeable, patient and genuinely helpful. But one bad apple can ruin the cart. An older employee named Katherine met me at the counter and was defensive, smug, condescending and rude. She told me I was the first person ever to complain about the new loyalty rules. When I asked to speak with the owner, her response was: "It won't do you any good." When I told her I was disappointed by both the loyalty change and the way she was treating me -- and that I was considering leaving a review or writing a letter to the editor -- she again essentially told me it wouldn't matter and nobody would care. Her tone and demeanor made it clear she wasn't interested in hearing me out or de-escalating the conversation. Quite the opposite. I felt dismissed and talked down to. There was no acknowledgment that a longtime customer might reasonably be disappointed, no sympathy, no attempt to explain the change constructively and certainly no effort to preserve goodwill. Maybe I missed the notice about the loyalty program. Fair enough. But good customer service isn't about always giving the customer what they want. Sometimes it's simply about listening, showing a little empathy and treating a loyal customer like their business still matters. That part should never expire.

It's a cute spot that I am sure would make a killing if they stayed open for post-dinner desserts. We were staying down the road and never seemed to catch them as they close by 2 pm every day. Our family of 4 got coffee, London Fog tea, breakfast sandwiches with sausage on croissants, a strawberry banana smoothie, blueberry turnover, and Belgian chocolate croissant. My ten year old said his smoothie and blueberry turnover were "the bomb." My six year old inhaled her chocolate croissant and didnt really come up for air. Everything was so fresh. The breakfast sandwiches came with two eggs, a lean sausage patty, and all of it was not greasy. The croissant was sturdier so it could stand up to the sandwich. Like everywhere else in the area, cash only, but they all have an ATM on site where you can pay an ATM fee. This one was $2. There were some nice picnic tables outside too. An excellent breakfast overall, so good I forgot to take pictures.

Normally I'm far too lazy to write a review, but we had such a good experience at this store that I thought I really should. We had a somewhat unfortunate time trying to start a fire in the blackwoods campground after buying wood and a starter log from here. We went back to ask for advice, and he was as confused as we were about why the logs wouldn't stay lit. He gave us another bundle of wood, some of his own kindling, and lighter fluid for free. In the end, it turns out that the supplier of the logs had left them out in the rain, and while they were dry on the outside, internal moisture kept them from burning correctly. We didn't get a fire to stay lit that night, but the store owner refunded our money without us asking, saying he hoped we would be back. We certainly will be if we're on Mount Desert Island again.

This was one of the most disturbing customer service experiences I've ever had…read more I stopped by this deli to buy some muffins. After picking one up, the owner suddenly snatched it out of my hand and immediately began yelling at me. I was completely caught off guard. I calmly asked what I had done wrong and said there was no reason to yell at me. Rather than explaining the situation, she continued shouting, became increasingly aggressive, and repeatedly ordered me to leave the store. At no point was I given a clear explanation for what had happened. My husband, who had been waiting in the car, saw me return upset and empty-handed. He went inside hoping to calmly resolve the misunderstanding, but he was also told to leave without any meaningful explanation. Despite his efforts to de-escalate the situation and speak respectfully, the owner continued yelling and refused to have a conversation. So we left. Later, we mentioned the incident to our Airbnb host, who told us he remembered similar confrontations involving this business with some of his past renters. After reading Yelp and other reviews, we also found accounts from other customers describing comparable experiences, including some who felt they were treated differently because they were non-white. I can't speak to the owner's motivations or intentions, but seeing similar accounts from others was deeply troubling. Any opportunities or excuses she can find to harass, she will. No customer should be yelled at, humiliated, or threatened for any reasons. Everyone deserves to be treated with basic courtesy and respect. We intend to report this incident through the appropriate channels so it can be properly reviewed. I also hope the business preserves any available security camera footage, as it may help provide an objective record of what occurred. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this establishment.
