It was great since Simha is also a multi-instrumentalist, they understood where I was coming from and how to correlate techniques like breathe control with my primary instrument, the flute. I'd wanted to learn piano since I was a child, but my family couldn't afford lessons. After years of thinking I was too old to learn music as an adult, I decided to go for it. I worked with a different teacher for a short time and when she moved out of state, I turned to Yelp to find new piano lessons. I'm so glad I did because that's how I found Lorie! I've been working with her for about 8 months now and she's truly the best. Lorie works with students of ALL ages, catering her sheet music, lessons, and approach to each individual student. She has a convenient studio in Echo Park, or she does in-home or FaceTime lessons. I've had a mix of all 3 and most of my lessons have been through video, which I honestly was worried wouldn't be as effective, but they've been just as great as in-person lessons (and I don't have to clean my house beforehand!) The first time Lorie came over for a lesson, I was impressed by the meticulous level of detail and preparation she had put into the first visit. She had asked me in advance for a list of songs I wanted to learn and brought an organized binder with resources (circle of fifths, warm-up exercises in each key, etc) printed sheet music for the songs I wanted, which she had researched and found the best arrangement for my level, other songs she thought would be good to learn based on my musical taste, spaces for notes, and recommendations for books and resources to buy. If there is a song I want to learn or new music I find, she encourages me to scan it to her so that she can re-work anything she needs to to adjust it to my skill level. Lorie will work with you and be understanding if you're a busy adult who can only promise one or two practice times a week, if you have questions about a song or get stuck between lessons, or whatever happens in life that might throw things off. If a song we are working on isn't sounding right, she will re-write the notes on the spot so that it's easier to learn or sounds the best that it can. What I love about her is that she is passionate about helping her students to truly understand music theory and the fundamentals of how songs are structured, learning how chords are built and commonly used chords, etc. other than just learning to play the songs alone. In the short time I've worked with her, I've really been proud of my the progress of my sightreading skills and how quickly I can put a song together. I've felt comfortable sitting down at pianos and playing melodies without sheet music at social gatherings. One of my goals is to play the grand piano at Union Station (ever notice how everyone who plays that one is REALLY good?) and I feel like Lorie's style of "teaching a man/woman how to fish" will really pay off in my understanding of music in the long term. Not only is Lorie an impressive, dedicated lifelong musician and amazing teacher, she is sweet, kind, compassionate, and truly cares about her students as well as her craft.
