In the years before everything was Amazon, these window displays would drive shoppers to the front windows of the stores at the pivotal Christmas shopping season, and several have been lovingly restored and maintained at the Historical Society. In addition to this showcase, there are two other buildings: A log cabin that does a great job of highlighting what life was like generations ago, and the Taylor House, a grand two-story house that has been kept in fantastic condition. John Ruskin: "Life without labor is guilt; labor without art is brutality." The JMK Art Museum celebrates art that is created not so much by highly trained or famous artists, but by regular people who have found sincere and approachable ways to express themselves. That is what makes the experience feel so genuine and human. I very much enjoyed all of the installations in this small but distinguished museum. It is thoughtfully curated, inspiring, and quietly powerful in its message. I would absolutely enjoy coming back to see future installations. A real gem for Wisconsin. ps - And don't forget to check out all of the bathrooms!

So we wanted to visit this newer location since it opened and finally we were able to do so. With a required reservation in hand we visited on a Saturday morning. This FREE museum is awesome. It is a beautiful space with plenty of room to display the large scale pieces of quirky and unique Americana art. Many of the artists are self taught and not your typical artist types. Some had been retired farmers and lumbermen. We have sought out many of these fascinating art installations around the state. It is a blessing that Kohler has saved many of these in the field and in some cases brought some of the pieces to this museum. As with their other museum you must see the stunning and fun bathrooms. A real gem!

Guests must be at least 14 years of age and must wear enclosed footwear. You are provided safety glasses and a narration headset and no cameras are allowed. Our tour guide was Elmer, who was a retired 40+ year employee of Kohler. He guided us through the three factory buildings which housed the vitreous china products manufacturing, as well as the cast iron and plumbing products. You could sense the pride that Elmer had in Kohler in his narration during the tour. We also went to the Kohler Arts/Industry Program center were we met the rotating artists that come into Kohler to create art pieces. The three hour tour ends back at the Design Center where you can browse through the displays of all the Kohler products and visit the Kohler Museum located in the lower level. A great tour to observe manufacturing in action. Best of all, the tour is free of admission.

Off to the side is a T-28 done up in Laotian colors, to honor Hmong pilots. Lots of signage explains that, and there's a lot more T-28 stuff inside. Plenty of models and artifacts inside, a partial homebuilt, some clothing, etc. A big library with a rack of free magazines. I restrained myself and only took 6. There's a little gift shop with some pretty cool shirts and hats, and used books along with a few about the Hmong pilots, etc. I'm an aviation buff, so I made a special point of stopping. They have tons to offer the 'itty bitties'- picture books, chapter books, more graphic novels and audio books also! Heading down to the 2nd floor to check out their teen section (to the right) they have a comfy, informal atmosphere with bean back style chairs, computers and a spiral staircase that climbs upward to the 3rd floor teen meeting room. The rest of the floor is a mix of fiction and nonfiction, copiers and computers and magazines. All-in-all, I'm a fan!
