Decent enough food. but was pricey by the time we got the bill. They have 99 cents tacos on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but I would say be careful on ordering on 99 cent taco day. A co-worker and I went there for lunch, got seven tacos between the two of us, with rice/beans, guacamole and one coke....$36. We thought there was a mistake and made them show us the itemized receipt instead of the handwritten one. Looks like we got charged for extras like tomato/lettuce, etc. on the tacos as well as rice and beans being $6 for each of us. We definitely didn't get what I would consider a side order. The one nice thing about this place is that they are serving normal size margaritas during COVID. A lot of places have downscaled the size of their margaritas to small juice glasses for the same price, but not here, they are still in the traditional glasses. read more

TACOS Y TELENOVELAS Enjoy a cheap lunch and daytime Telemundo at my 2nd favorite taqueria in Melrose Park. Every couple of weeks, I pop in to Los Cocos on a Tuesday when tacos are conveniently priced at one dollar apiece. This place is easy to find, at the end of a strip mall on the north side of North Ave. You seat yourself and wait for someone to notice you (hopefully). Chips & salsa are free the first time around; their salsa is made with fresh tomato, onions, cilantro, and diced jalapeno. They also provide two bottled salsas -- one red/spicy, one green/mild -- and a cup of fresh-cut lime wedges in case you need to put out the flames. For starters, I'd recommend the 'queso fundido con chorizo' ($5.50), melted chihuahua cheese with crumbled sausage. Steak burrito suizas ($6) are large and come packed with lettuce, cheese, rice and beans. Seafood appears to be popular here, like jumbo shrimp cocktail in a can. My findings are that tacos 'al pastor' are the way to go. The pork is marinated with pineapple and topped with onions & cilantro. Other choices like steamed goat, liver, and pork skin should be ordered at your own peril (I recently got something that tasted like 80% whale blubber). Bread = 3.5 Circuses = 3.5 Nichole C claims their micheladas ($5) are good, and she's the foremost authority on such things. Coronas/Modelos will set you back $4, while a large horchata costs $2.25. Service is okay, depending on the time of day or where you sit. I've had mostly no issues in the past, though for whatever reason I was ignored on my last visit. There's an area for live music and the Mexican soap operas on TV are endlessly entertaining. * TL;DR * "What's María doing here? She's sleeping with Hector too!? That bitch!" *fighting ensues* It's admittedly tough to compete with Alejandra's (the best Mexican restaurant in a 10mi radius), but Los Cocos offering $1 tacos every Tuesday gives me reason enough to come back here. A standout in the sea of "Meh"ican Depending on where you are, there could be a sea of Mexican, chicken, or American fare restaurants...quite frequently inhabiting the same city block. Usually these places barely get by, shoveling out the lowest quality food you can imagine for dirt cheap prices for their splintered customer base. Los Cocos proves themselves above that level with their quaint establishment in Melrose Park. As I walk in I see that the place is pretty empty during lunch hour on a Saturday. Within a minute of me sitting down at a table a waitress promptly rushes over with a menu. I have a hunger for seafood so I pretty quickly settle for the $33 "Mariscada" platter which consists of crab legs, langostinos, tilapia, etc. Since I knew it might be awhile I also ordered a Burrito de Chile Relleno or stuffed pepper burrito. The staff was pretty friendly, as the lunch crowd came in they scurried about cleaning tables and trying to help patrons. My burrito was ready in about 5-10 minutes, after the waitress dropped it off she didn't really check on me anymore even though it was clear the lime Jarrito I started off with was done. Even after coming to pick up empty plate for the burrito, no attention was giving to drinks which was kind of odd. The burrito itself was really tasty. This place sure knows how to make them. The flour tortilla was cooked perfectly as well as the rice and beans. The beans were actually a thin layer at the ends of the burrito while the burrito had seasoned rice as the filler. Much to my surprise the re-fried beans actually tasted like they were freshly made and didn't come from a can which was a nice cherry on top. Now on to the deluxe supreme dream...the Mariscada. It actually took a shorter time than I thought it would, but it didn't disappoint! I think they realized that $33 was way too much for what was offered as well so they threw in an extra dish of spicy oysters & shrimp for free. The breaded shrimp and tilapia were fantastic. Everything was hell seasoned with the right amount of salt to bring out the flavor. My gripes would be the langostino actually tasted like vomit and the crab salad mixes were sub-par. I tried adding some lime, but it didn't help the flavor for those bad dishes. The salad you can tell was fresh. The spicy shrimp and oysters were...oh my god levels spicy. They could've warned me it would be like that especially since it was on the house. It was good nonetheless though, with the shrimp and oysters perfectly cooked and balancing out the spicy sauce. Overall I'd visit this place again to try out more dishes. The crab salad recipe needs some work, but the overall menu is tasty and the chef definitely tries to put effort into the cooking here. 4 out of 5 stars read more

Went to this gem with 2 others after watching the latest Twilight series movie. Most notable is the ambiance at this restaurant. During the Saturday night when we were there a rather large children's party was being held. They had a pretty large buffet going on, wish I would have had a chance to closely examine it. In addition to the large kids party, there was a disco ball flashing lights all around the dining room to the delight of everyone. Just below one of the spinning disco lights sat an enormous television set playing the greatest Mexican-gangster video hits when the karaoke sing-along was not in use. By the way, the music was really loud. We felt like we were yelling at each other during our visit. The decor and table arrangements were interesting, in the, 'I wonder what/ why the hell that is' vein. Now the food and drinks. My beer was good and it came with 5 limes. Thanks, I'll use all 5 limes! My company ordered Margaritas and they both commented that they tasted like mix from the bottle. Fish tacos were flipping awesome, I slathered mine in green sauce and they were great. One of the company ordered a burrito which was also eaten with delight. All in all it was a great meal. A perfect lunch place if you work or live nearby. I guess dinner would be great too as they have an area for dancing. My regular dish is the fish taco dinner. They dice up the fish fillet and grill it and put it nicely with cilantro and little bit jalapeno. I asked them to leave the onions out for me. It's just perfect comparing to what you usually get a piece of breaded fried fish fillet in the taco at other places. You have to try the ceviche as well if you likes fish. I highly recommend Jamaica drink which is made from jamaica flowers. Sweet tea type drink is perfect for the spicy food. They were very accommodating and they had our table ready when we got there. Everyone in our party was very happy with their food. Some people ordered tampiqueñas, Camerones empanisados, tortas, mole, ceviche, tacos, and pozole. Everyone was happy with their food. I was very surprised at how good their red mole cheese enchiladas were. (They serve one with the tampiqueña) I also wished I would have ordered just the enchilada meal! Our waitress was very nice and was very on top of everything. She handled our large party well and we had no mistakes. The gratuity was automatically added to our tab since it was a large party. CHECK YOUR FOOD FOR METAL! Owner's wife Bertha unprofessional and uncaring to the incident or customer concern. I ordered a burrito with certain ingredients and they got it wrong but that's not the reason I'm writing this, more importantly there was a piece of hard metal found in my burrito! As I chewed the steak I felt something odd roaming in my mouth when I spit out the piece I found a thick piece of metal! I asked to speak with the manager this woman whom refused to give me her name and just gave me her husband's name (owner of the establishment) took my plate and told me I don't have to pay but then walked off. I asked the waitress I was concerned as I had eaten 3/4 of the burrito already, she gave me their restaurant general business card and the lady's first name. When I asked "owner's wife" for her full name and a contact she brushed me off and said you don't need to know my name just contact Javier Lopez. One of the waitress was kind enough to provide me her name, which is Bertha. The lack of concerned and professionalism by this Bertha woman was astonishing she was more concerned on taking the plate away from me than speaking to me to see if I was ok. I said that she should probably retrieve the rest of the customer's plate who ordered any steak dishes as it looks like she may have a contamination in the kitchen. She ignored me and ran off with my plate to the back of the kitchen but didn't go back to the dining floor, hopefully that was an isolated incident and the rest of the families eating there did not encounter metal in their dishes! read more

Great little place. I've been here several times. Service is always friendly (although sometimes you have to practice your Spanish) and food comes out quick. Occasionally servers forget about you after the food is served but a wave will bring them over. The main reason I give it 5 stars is the ceviche, the best I've ever had in the Chicago area. We went in to pick up our order, and we were charged $15 extra for a bigger order of food when we wanted the small. I let her know I wanted the small and not the large and she responded "well you didn't say that" and when I proceeded to say "oh I'm sorry but you also should've said we have 2 orders which one would you like" she said "you should have told me what you wanted". She continued to give me an attitude, and refused to give me the small order. This is my 2nd bad experience with her seeing how the other day she overcharged me $20. She called her manager over and he said "it's an unwritten rule to sell the bigger order so we make the money." He gave her the food and asked her to go get us the smaller order, and charged us the correct amount, and to compliment the inconvenience they gave 2 menus. I'm from Forest Park, IL and I've been looking for a decent (I choose my words carefully when I say "decent", because at the rate I've gone through so called "good" Mexican restaurants in the Oak Park, Berwyn, Forest Park, North Riverside areas, at this point I've come to expect at best mediocrity) Mexican restaurant for AGES. I'm first generation Mexican-American and I am use to GOOD, AUTHENTIC Mexican food cooked by family or close relatives, and can I attest that Los Cocos does the best job of offering authentic and GOOD Mexican food. I don't want to be all hype, nor do I want to throw every other Mexi-place under the bus, but this is probably one of the best Mexican restaurants, if not the best, I have eaten at in the West Chicago suburbs (and yes, I've tried Zacas-tacos, Lalos, La Majada, El Rebozo, blah, blah, blah, sorry, but either over priced, poorly cooked/prepared, or not worth the drive through back-to-back stoplight traffic down Harlem Ave.) Prices are more than reasonable; the only minor hitch, which could also be viewed as a positive depending on your funkiness, on Friday & Saturday evenings (starting !after 7pm) they have Spanish-only karaoke that is VERY loud, and usually not very good or, at least not entertaining; but, if you're into trying something new, maybe the Spanish canciones will be up your alley. read more

Needless to say I was fine with it. The manger came by who might I add was rude, really just unpleasant she said can I help you I said yeah can you charge me for chips and salsa. The owner proceeded to dump the chip from pre-made bowls for the dinner tables into a bag and gave to me the bag. I was in shock. This is a hard one because my food has varied. The first time the hubby & I tried it, I got the goat and he got a very spicy beef dish. Loved it so much! Beef was just as spicy as we liked it, not toned down for American palates as in so often done. Great flavor. My goat dish was tender and succulent and so good...not overly salty as is so frequently the case. Have been back for both dishes and both were consistent. However have tried other items and didn't enjoy them at all...so thus far I can only get behind the two mentioned items but they are superior to these items from anwhere else in the area. It's spacious and if I recall correctly has a full bar...definitely beer. Go get your goat! read more

I've been meaning to try other things on the menu because it all looks pretty good, but I can't get passed the tacos. This place is pretty simple. I hear they have live music weekend nights. It's always pretty clean and the staff is helpful. Why do I go here so often?? I'm hooked on the fish tacos. To me, they set the bar high for fish tacos. I think it's a grilled tilapia or maybe some other white fish. It's always perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. They serve it with onion, cilantro and slices of jalapeno for a little kick. The pork tacos are great too. The pork is cooked well and it's never too chewy. This is served with a red sauce and slices of pineapple giving it a great combination of flavors. read more
