Hiking Los Cahorros trail in Monachil, close to Granada (Sierra Nevada mountains ) was our highlight as far as Granada area trips.
The route starts at the village of Monachil where if you pay attention to the signs and follow them they will lead you to the large parking lot. From there keep the river on your left as you walk up the road towards the trailhead. Around 100 meters up the road, there's a sign to the trail, leading up along the river.
Since we hiked the route in the summer (June 2021), we decided not to do the whole circle, but instead we hiked till we had decent shade (1.5h up) and than took the same route back.
It was a very hot day, and we were very jealous to see people swimming along the route in swimming holes under us.
Definitely bring some water, if you're hiking in the summer, bring a lot, all depends where you're coming from. We live in Florida where there is lot of humidity so it was really easy for us, even ran the trail at some points. Some parts can get little muddy and slippery so make sure you wear appropriate footwear (saw people in flip-flops holding everybody down since they were afraid of slipping and falling), so be considerate of other people's tempo.
Definitely a must!! Would love to come back in spring or early summer and walk the whole trail. read more
