Manager very unprofessional. He was too busy making margaritas instead of managing the restaurant. We went on December 21 2022 at about 7 pm.   As we went in we saw the board with the specials. We asked the waitress what the specials were again. She said it was carne guisada with nachos for $9 and it comes with tea. My wife and i both got that.   We got our meal and ate. The waitress charged us on her keypad. I asked to see the receipt. She said she could print it out after i paid. The receipt showed $10 for my wife's meal, she got no beans and double rice. Mine was $9. And they also charged us $2.99 for each tea. I asked waitress why my wife's was 10 and mine was 9. And about the teas. She went to Manager and he told her it was lunch special that's why one was 9 and other 10. I asked to speak to Manager and she said he was busy making margaritas. He didn't come to our table, i had to go over to him. Then he said hold on a minute. When he came back he said same thing, it was lunch special. Then he angrily said, "what do you want me to do, give your dollar back?"  I said also the teas were also supposed to be free.  And then i showed him a picture of the specials.   He cussed and went to the order computer and kicked the chair near there. Then he went to front and looked at specials board. Then he went to waitress and said something to her that it was only a $1. He never came back to us and continued making margaritas. The waitress gave us $8 back. I don't believe the Manager ever gave her the money. I think she took it out of her own pocket. I gave back the money to her. The service from the waitress assigned to our table was lacking. The waitress was not very friendly & welcoming. She would disappear and didn't bother checking on us. We were a party of 15. One waitress who was never available, she took our drink orders and an hour past still waiting for my margarita after asking two other times of the whereabouts was the order. Our food was cold and drinks were wanting but never received. The table across from us also waiting for their margaritas were done with their meal and after a second inquiry finally received their margaritas. unfortunately the automatically tact on a gratuity of 18% with a party 6 or larger and normally I add an additional 20% if the service warrants it. This service didn't even warrant the 18%. Very sad considerping it use to be a great restaurant but now I doubt we will return. read more

Los Asados has always been one of my favorites. We went twice this past weekend while in Harlingen, after almost 2 years of not having been. The sweet tea is still diabetically-delicious, as it always has been. First disappointment of the meal: the chips came out of a bag!!! There used to be a time when Los Asados offered fresh, home-style tortilla chips to accompany their salsa. I did, however, love the freshness of the ingredients in the salsa. I think I could eat that stuff by the gallon! Our servers both times were attentive, polite ladies who made our experiences great. The first watress we had, Elia, was such a blessing! We were going to order the botana for 4, until she recommended ordering two botanas for 2 instead. She assured us that not only would the meal come out to $6 less, she also reminded us about the variety of having both chicken and beef. Well played, Elia! Unfortunately I do not recall the name of the 2nd server we had, but she was just as pleasant. If you check-in on Facebook, you get a $2 special on beer. Which I would recommend instead of a mixed drink since it appeared that my pina colada and my Beer-rita had hardly any alcohol in them. Perhaps this is the reason why our sweet teas ended up being complimentary at the end of the meal? Also, the sign outside boasts "Grill and Bar" yet when one of the guests at our table attempted to order a Jack and Coke, she stated they didn't have any bourbon. The botanas and the rest of the food came out extremely fast, just like always. The chips on the botanas seemed to have a miniscule amount of beans, though. On the other hand, the chicken and beef were both flavorful and juicy, and the guacamole was nice and fresh. The crispy taco on someone's plate had ground beef that tasted a little off, which is weird because the following visit (which was 1 day later) the ground beef in the crispy taco tasted just fine. For the finish, we had tres leches cake and flan, which were both good. All in all, I would definitely come back for the food however I'll just have to be more picky on what I order. read more

Today I thought I'd try something different so I ordered the shrimp taco meal. it was terrible. shrimp was tasteless and sautéed with onions still no flavor. so wet that the shrimp broke through the tortilla. slaw was shredded red cabbage and also tasteless. In a city full of Mexican restaurants it's kind of difficult to stand out. There are a few reasons that you may consider this restaurant. They have good margarita specials during happy hour, their ground beef crispy tacos have a great flavor and they have enough seating to accommodate a crowd. Other than that I think the food is about average. Prices seem a bit higher than similar restaurants. Fajitas were fresh, yummy, hot and a big portion. Chicken was juicy and veggies were not over cooked. Great! I asked for some "hot" sauce since the salsa was kind of mild and they brought me a delicious jalapeño based salsa!! YUMMERS!! Corn tortillas were delicious and very fresh.. I could of eaten 3 more if they had given them to me. (All the staff wears hair nets). The service was awesome. NOW we're talkin! Finally, a Mexican meal I can get down with. There seems to be some family history between Pepe's and Los Asados, and having been to both restaurants, I have to say I enjoyed Los Asados much more. The chips and salsa are as addictive as Pepe's...just the right amount of heat and chunks of tomato, onions and jalapenos. It's not a chunky salsa, but it's not boring or bland, either. We also got a side order of guacamole and I did notice that Pepe's gave us much larger portions and is a dollar cheaper. Both taste about the same; creamy and without much seasoning or heat. In a nutshell, somewhat lacking in flavor but I -love- guacamole that's that creamy. It was nothing but avocado (with big chunks), some salt and some pepper. I wanted so many things on their menu but instead decided to get the enchiladas verdes. I thought it would be nice to compare the two places on the same dish. For me, the dish may have been a hair more at Los Asados, but I also got three enchiladas instead of two. The portion of rice and beans was much smaller than Pepe's, but the enchiladas are bigger and the chicken was so much more moist. The verde sauce had a lot more flavor at Los Asados and there was a good amount of filling in my enchiladas. The portion of rice and beans was bigger at Pepe's, but the flavor of them was better at Los Asados. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal; if you see a totally clean plate, that would be mine. :) One helpful thing to know is that service is lickety split, so if you're in a hurry, don't worry about getting in and out of this place. read more

I have eaten at Los Asados only once. My wife and I went with a group of people who frequent the place. We were not impressed with the food. It was very bland. It wasn't terrible tasting but was similar to a cheap Mexican fast food or Taqueria. The beans and rice didn't have much flavor and the Tacos were just average. On the plus side, they do give you a lot of food at a very cheap price ($4.95 a plate at lunch). We will be trying out other Mexican restaurants in the area before returning here. read more

The place has been a staple of sorts for family evening dinners in Harlingen for as long as I can remember and it's not because we're creatures of habit. Loves it! You can never go wrong by eating at Los Asados - everything on the menu is delicious. I have been going here with my parents since I was a small child in the late 80s. It's always packed - and once you're eating, you'll know why. It's not the most attractive place on the inside - rather plain and somewhat gaudy, but the seating and the employees get the job done. I usually go to Los Asados with another person or two - so we always get a botana. I could live off those! And I usually order enchiladas - and I clean my plate! I came here on a Thurs night, with a friend. Their flautas were crispy and pretty good. Their $3 tamarindo margarita was bomb (tho possibly an acquired taste since tamarindo is legit Mexican). They also had $2 regular margaritas. What, what? But really. I was tempted to give them all 5 stars for drinks alone. Their lemonade is freshly made and delicious. But there wasn't really anything spicy about my food, thus making this place more Tex-mex than Mexican. Their salsa (served with chips) was mild at most (it's basically just tomatoes). Delicious, FASTest restaurant I've ever been too, and MAD specials! Can't go wrongwith ANY of the enchiladas, tacos, chalupas or fajitas, but especially ENCHILADAS. As for soups or carne guisada, I wouldnt know, only bc I dont really care for that kind of stuff (due to bad experiences). If you're like me, you don't go after the cheap places- especially when it comes to Mexican food...there are some real sketchy mex restaurants out there...(yuck!!) if you know what I mean. Recently went by for lunch on a Sunday and was made incredibly uncomfortable during the dining experience as the hostess kept approaching our table to make rude faces and remarks. She approached our table as we clearly had food in our mouths and then mocked my partner for having food on his mouth. She then approached several times afterward asking about drinks and aggressively trying to speak to me when I clearly did not want to speak with her. Love it! I head to this place every year when I am in TX for Christmas. The food is really good and can be found at a great price. The fajitas, rice, beans, tacos, tortillas, chips, salsa.... everything is fantastic! Do not forget to order the sweet tea! This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant for many years but recently they changed up the skirt steak fajitas. They're not the same fajitas that I used to love. I also used to love the chips and salsa but 1 year ago they switched to some really hard and thick chips that fill you up after a couple of them. I used to love the thin light chips that crisped in your mouth, kind of like some tostitos white corn chips. That was the best. They also used to give you some cut up jalapeños incase you wanted to spice up your salsa and !!boom!! They got rid of that one as well. It's just heartbreaking that things have changed.
