This old AF Base has hosted some EPIC, yes I said it, EPIC events. If you are into Phish, you know what I mean.
It is located in one of the most remote sections of the country, it is as far north in Maine as you can get and then some. The town of Limestone is small... yeah, like really small. In fact, when Phish comes to town the locals will stand on the street like there is a freak parade and watch all of us sit in traffic for 10... 12... 14 hours offering water, beer and food, these people are great.
There is only one road that I know of that leads to the AFB, so in 1997, 1998 and 2003 when Phish put on these festivals they overlooked access routes. Imagine trying to get 75 to 80k people into an AFB with one 2 lane road.... it is a traffic nightmare.
However, if I were to have to wait in traffic for 12+ hours it would be the traffic leading into Limestone....
Now lets get to the important part of the review. Once a year for 3 summers Phish put on these epic two day festivals... One band one AFB and a shit load of hippies! At these festivals it was generally "anything goes" so it goes without saying the type of crazy shit you would encounter.
Without going into too much detail about the shows... I have had my face melted on that AFB more than once.... The Bathtub Gin in 1997... The disco set in 1998 and the Ghost in 2003. I would probably give my left nut to go back in time and relive these 3 great moments in Phishtory. or shit how could I leave out the Tower set in 2003... Deep in bat country Phish gets on the control tower and plays the spaciest shit I have ever heard, while my head began to explode I could swear the control tower was about to take off.
wow... this review probably wont make much sense at all... sorry for the rambling... but if you ever get a chance visit Limestone... its nice little town, I think? read more
