Everyone from the receptionists to the assistants to the veterinarians! Any time I get a call, the staff is so friendly and courteous. During appointments every member of staff is so patient, kind, and understanding - even if your pup is super hyper and excited. This location offers a ton of services from general checkups, puppy health plans, grooming and boarding, and much more. They're location is very convenient - just off of Highway 72 on the east side of Athens. There's always plenty of parking as well. The waiting room has free refreshments, including sodas, coffee, juice, water, and snacks. I've taken my dog here since he was a puppy and got to witness firsthand how caring and thorough the staff is as he has grown. First, for every checkup, the doctors have gone the extra mile to not only ask me questions about his development and behavior whiling doing routine health procedures, but they also go out of their way to take the time to EXPLAIN the reasons for different procedures and why they're asking certain questions. They give guidance and tips to help you have a healthy and happy pet! Even after the appointment, they provide you with somewhat of a "report card" so you can see an overall view of your pet's health. And that doesn't stop with general "health" appointments -- I dropped my pup by for grooming and got a report card when i picked him up detailing the health of his coat, skin, ears, teeth, and even his behavior! There's also been multiple times that the clinic has called me a week or so after an appointment to check in and make sure all is well following the recent appointment. I honestly feel like they're more comprehensive than my own human doctor. While this clinic may be a bit pricier than other options, to me it's worth it. Why? Because of the people. They truly go above and beyond, and you can rest assured that your pet is in fantastic hands.

My husband surprised me with a 6 month old adopted kitten last Sunday!!! One of the first things I noticed about Lemmy (yes, he is named for the late great lead singer of Motorhead) was that he had an upper respiratory infection/cold. Enter Village Vet, which is so conveniently located ~ 10 minutes west of our home. What a Godsend to have a traffic-free, stress-free driving experience, especially with a new little kitten in tow. I also like and appreciate their love of community with the various pet food/supply drives they initiate. We arrived 10 minutes early and phoned the vet's office from the parking lot (per their protocol) and were welcomed immediately. The super sweet, cute vet tech did a great job with the intake and pre-exam, and I did not have to fill out any paperwork; however I did email the paperwork "A New Leash on Life" provided regarding Lemmy's medical history, vaccines, etc., to VVC the day prior to our appointment. Lemmy is at that playful stage which can include nipping/biting (yes, he got my right wrist - thankfully, not too badly) and he almost broke the skin of the sweet vet tech (!!!!) The vet tech prevailed and did not let it deter her in any way -- very nice! Within minutes Dr. Rhoda Stanley was discussing Lemmy's symptoms and reviewing his records and examining him, and within 30 minutes we were done, including clipping his "talons" (they were SO long!), and with antibiotics in hand we headed home with a follow up appointment in a week. At the recommendation of one of my sisters-in-law, we used Dr. Pitman for boarding purposes and…read moreannual checkups years ago [3 dogs and 1 cat]. The checkups were uneventful and didn't seem particularly expensive. When we boarded our 3-4 animals here, upon pickup, they all had a strange smell and appeared dazed. It took them several days to get back to normal. I've read that this veterinarian co-locates his boarding animals with his animal shelter aka "the Doghouse." This doesn't seem to be a good practice IMO because one of my former co-workers adopted a dog from the on-premises Doghouse/shelter, and the poor pup had parvo! Because I could not find anyone to perform an in-home euthanasia for my sweet kitty-cat Jewel, years ago, as a last resort, I asked Dr. Pitman who agreed to do it. He was not compassionate or empathetic in the least, as I was an emotional wreck, and my husband was, too. [I took 3 days off work to mourn Jewel's death]. Pittman seemed to be in a huge hurry and wanted to get this over with! This was not my intent. My goal was to get my priest on the phone to pray with me, and for me to keep my fur baby as comfortable as possible while undergoing this sad process. I had Jewel on a towel on my lap, and when Jewel died, Pitman didn't even have a proper carrier that would honor my fur baby [think the blue bags with handles the emergency vet in downtown Huntsville uses] to transport Jewel's body to his truck. Pitman just wrapped Jewel in my bath towel and off he went. My last encounter with Pitman was when a stray cat somehow [without us knowing it] got into our back yard. Sadly, our dogs attacked the cat and his back and legs were broken. Wow, this was really upsetting! I called Animal Control to help me remove the poor cat from under my deck and put him into a carrier for me to take to the closest vet I know, which was Pitman. My priorities were 1. Eradicate the cat's pain 2. scan the cat for a chip/try my best to find the owner [he/she didn't have a collar/ID tag on] 3. determine the extent of the cat's injuries and 4. make an informed decision about a path forward. Long story short, he quoted me a price to surgically repair the damage, which I knew would not be the end of the costs for treating this stray cat - and what quality of life would this animal have after such intense damage? Again, not my cat and we were not interested in having a second cat. I thought it may be my neighbor's cat, and when I found out it wasn't, I was losing focus on what the responsible thing for me to do actually was. My workday morning was completely thrown off by this incident, I was not treated with compassion, I was very upset that my animals caused this animal to suffer and after being unable to locate the owner, made the decision to euthanize the cat. I did not feel like I should have to pay the entire price for the euthanization since it was not my animal, and I made this clear to Pitman. Reluctantly, Pitman did discount the procedure and I recall he charged me $150-$175 that morning [this was somewhere in the 2011 timeframe]. Thankfully, that was my last interaction with Pitman. Thankfully, there are abundant kind, compassionate, community-focused, veterinarians in the area now, who desire to, and actually do garner goodwill in the region, who put their patient [the fur baby] and the animal's needs first, and who also foster and grow compassionate relationships with the animals' owners, and do not prioritize power, wealth, and eradication of certain dog breeds.

Dr. Greenbaum and his crew were amazing with our diva, even with her being a bit sassy. He and his techs explained the diagnosis to us, confirmed that it was indeed cancer, and offered us so much more information and how to continue with her treatment. The compassion and effort in just that couple of visits have convinced us to continue on with her care there, even though we are driving from North Huntsville to Decatur for her treatment. Thanks Dr. Greenbaum and staff for all that you do for every ones fur babies. Y'all are well worth making that drive when we have to take our girls in. We appreciate you greatly!
