These charming cartoon characters were the stars of the animated tv show The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle which ran from 1959 to 1964 and has had a great many reruns since. Bullwinkle is the moose and Rocky is the squirrel. The original statue was commissioned by Jay Ward, the producer of the TV show, when the show switched to a new network. The old location of the statue was at Jay Ward studios which was at 8218 Sunset (across from Chateau Marmont) and was debuted by Jayne Mansfield, a Hollywood actress and sex symbol, in 1961. The statue often parodied the statue of a Las Vegas show girl across the street. That showgirl ad lasted for a decade but Rocky and Bullwinkle stayed at that location until 2013 when it was removed for restoration. In 2015, the statue was gifted to the City of West Hollywood and in 2020 it was placed in its current spot on Holloway Drive. Bullwinkle is wearing a stripped bathing suit circa 1900 and holding his pal Rocky who is donning aviator goggles on his head and waving. I am a lover of animation and art in general so it is a great treat to see this statue. I also very much love when vintage art and Hollywood history is well taken care of and restored to its original glory. This is a an absolutely lovely piece.

It is so easy to walk or drive past important buildings, statues, or places of interest in a large city like Los Angeles without blinking an eye. One particular example is the Merced Theatre (originally named the Merced-Abbott Building) located in the original El Pueblo de los Angeles district. This was not only the first theatre in the city, but also a gift to cabinetmaker William Abbott's wife, Mercedes (who went by Merced)--hence the building's name. Together they had hoped to rival the other three-story building around the corner, The Pico House. Both buildings shared an interconnecting door which worked great for Pico House guests. Merced Theater offered live theatre between 1871 to 1876 until it ceased operations due to an outbreak of smallpox at the nearby Wood's Opera House. Here's where things get interesting... When the Merced re-opened towards the end of the 19th century, Victorian Sex Clubs were the only organizations that could afford the high rent of the building making it LA's first porn theatre. At that time, it also offered a safe gathering place to LGBTQ+ individuals through its hosting of masked balls. These costumed balls allowed anyone to socialize with one another under the safety of their concealed identities, in addition to have the freedom to dress in clothing of the opposite gender without fear of persecution. Beginning in 1897, the building was used as a lodging house for queer men. Now the building is apparently undergoing renovations to become the new home of Cityview, the City of Los Angeles public access TV station on Channel 35. Nonetheless, I wanted to share these fascinating facts and can't wait to go visit the building and peek through the windows. "Plaque Marker NO. 171 MERCED THEATRE - The Merced Theatre was built in 1870 and is one of the oldest structures erected in Los Angeles for the presentation of dramatic performances. It served as the center of theatrical activity in the city from 1871 to 1876. The theatre was built by William Abbot, the son of Swiss immigrants who settled in Los Angeles in 1854. In 1858, he married the woman for whom he would name the theatre, Maria Merced Garcia, the daughter of Jose Antonio Garcia and Maria Guadalupe Uribe, who were long-time residents of the Los Angeles pueblo."

They were designed to honor all of the soldiers who served in the Navy. Scultpor Stanley Bleifield is responsible for this amazing tribute to all of the soldiers who have served in the Navy. The statue is a copy of the United States Navy Memorial in Washington DC. Which recognized the Second World War 1939-1945. Currently you can buy commemorative bricks in different sizes. To date there are 525 bricks that have been installed to create what it has become. The Memorial was dedicated on October 13, 2004. The Fleet Reserve Association Branch 43 worked on this project for roughly 2 years. The committee is made up of veterans, partners of parks, and locals. These amazing people raised the monies needed for everything that took place to bring this statue to its resting place. Would def recommend - even if you are just reflect on something outside of yourself to honor those who have fallen, and those who are still with us. Our history is an important part of who we are as a nation. Sometimes walking past something with so much significance is a loss in itself if you dont take a moment to recognize.
