She's a high school senior currently experiencing homelessness, and her mom wasn't able to celebrate her birthday this year.. As someone who runs a nonprofit, I reached out to a few places hoping someone would be willing to help make her day special. When I say they were absolutely amazing, I mean that with my whole heart. They were kind, welcoming, and so accommodating. They helped create a beautiful space where she and her friends could celebrate, laugh, and just be young for a moment. And listen... it wasn't just pictures. It was joy, confidence, and memories. Watching these girls light up, feel beautiful, and enjoy themselves in such a fun, creative environment meant everything. You could literally see their spirits lift. Everybody deserves to feel special, especially on their birthday and especially a young woman pushing through life and still showing up and doing her best. Because of this experience, I will always support and recommend them. If you're looking for a place that brings fun, creativity, and positive energy, this is definitely a spot you should check out

A bit underwhelming…read more When I visited Grotto, I was a little disappointed. The Grotto is a small section of the Riverwalk that is designed as a man-made rock grotto. You can walk under the cave to view a waterfall and fountain. I am not sure if it was construction or a poorly built safety rail, but the pathway surrounding the installation was lined with cheap-looking PVC pipes and buckets filled with concrete. It really took away from the art installation. The photos really make the Grotto seem larger and more robust than it actually is. Once you walk under it, the main attraction (the face and fountain) is actually quite small. I would only really visit if you're in the Pearl-Midtown area, otherwise I would not recommend going out of your way to see it.

We only found out this week that this museum existed. It was featured on the local news…read more It's only open to the public on Saturdays from 10:00am to 5:00 pm. The weekdays appear to be devoted to schools and workshops. The museum is free but donations are appreciated. There are tour guides to take you chronologically through the exhibits. The main themes of the exhibits are electricity and communication and how they came to be. You are taken from Morse code, ticker tape, western union, punch cards and old computers through one of the first cell phones invented in the mid-90s by a local man, who happens to be the same person who created this museum. Of course, the best is saved for last. Who doesn't love Tesla coils firing to the Star Wars theme, followed by Walk like an Egyptian? Sweet. Go there and enjoy. Donate generously. We need our kids to keep up with the rest of the world.

A groupon made the cost even better. This was a really cool outing. There was so much more to see and learn than expected. The animal exhibits were really nicely set up, the fossils and ancient cultural artifacts were amazing. We were genuinely surprised at the Spanish art exhibit. The number and diversity of original pieces (paintings, sculptures, carvings, and hand worked decorations) along with the shipping display and the other centuries-old tools made it woth the time. The staff was friendly, informed and helpful as well. The outdoor dinosaur displays are stunning and HUGE. Our group ranged in ages from 3 years old to 62. We all left saying how great this experience was. Don't let the rural location steer you away. This was a really worthwhile time.

Not every exhibit dealt with Texas Independence. There is an amphitheater in the rear of the building, and a great reflection pool at the front of the museum. Definitely very worthwhile checking out the museum. While there, be sure to also check out the nearby Veterans Plaza and Horace Eggleston House.

The forensic reconstruction of those who perished along with their biographies was thought-provoking. I've lived in Kerrville for over 16 years but have never visited the Mansion. Hearing of the…read morespecial Christmas tours this week, a friend and I decided to go. This special tour benefited the Hill Country Youth Orchestra; having played in the San Antonio Youth Orchestra, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a small donation and take a tour to boot. As expected, the Mansion was decorated for the season; the garlands wrapped around the banisters were particularly beautiful. We started on the second floor, which resembles a large ballroom, with a short video presentation on the history of the place and its occupants throughout the years. A short presentation by a docent followed whereupon we were free to look around to our hearts content. Then it was down to the first floor where the two highlights were a beautiful parquet floor and a chandelier which was an original fixture of the building. There were hand-blown bulbs of colored glass which, unfortunately, could not be lit lest they burst. Then it was into the kitchen for cookies and wassail; those who wished could step out into the garden with its beautiful hand-crafted fountain. Of particular interest was a glass-pane door flanked by two large pineapple statues, the symbol in the South of hospitality. If you're in Kerrville, try to avail yourself of a tour of the wonderful home, especially if you have children with you. They can see first hand what life was like more than a century ago and come away with memories of this beautiful place.
