This is the best local shop I have ever lived near.I love it. And it really is open 24 hours, not just till midnight like some 24 hour shops. It almost doesn't bother me that the groceries are more expensive than some others shops in the area, because I still haven't got over the fact that I can buy mangoes, aspirin AND fish fingers at 3am in the morning. Also, the staff are very friendly and do not judge my midnight food selections. I can recommend this shop to anyone with a dairy allergy. Whilst I would not call their selection extensive, unlike most local grocery shops there is a good range of soya/lactose free products. I was really surprised to find dairy-free custards, milkshakes and cream in a store of this size. They also have a good selection of goat and sheep products for anyone like me, who can't have cow's milk.

They sell hundreds, well that's a slight exaggeration, but they do have a lot of variety and not just in bread. Church Street Supermarket stocks luxury items not usually provided by smaller, local vendors such as Green and Blacks chocolate spread, Dorset Cereals and RJ's of New Zealand natural liquorice. They cater fantastically to the Stoke Newington mentality of organic, free range and recyclable, with a great selection of dairy and dairy replacements, vegetables and fruit. Not everything here is in the tree huggers category but they do try and even ask before shoving everything into a plastic bag because they know we all have canvas ones tucked under our hairy hippie armpits. The staff here are perpetually cheerful, even though the shop is open twenty four hours. The newspaper stand is well stocked, although they always run out of The Guardian because people that live on Church Street all seem to read the same paper.

Today, after leaving the shop, I realised that they hadn't given me back the right change. 5£ were missing. When I came back and explained them the mistake they had made, they first denied it, then when I suggested they look at the cash balance or video camera to see that they hadn't given me the right change, they refused. They blamed me for not having noticed the mistake immediately and insulted me. I felt extremely uncomfortable and angry that they would treat a loyal customer like that. I will never go back there again.

There is nothing that makes this store worth travelling miles just to see (it is, after all, just a grocer-type place) but when your are here you'll see that it is worthy of it's four stars. It does indeed sell everything you would expect of a convenience store - with a healthy alcohol section (substantial, not necessarily good for you) - but that should only really equate to 3 stars in my eyes. The fourth star is awarded for the level of cleanliness and the sense of order here at G Express. ALL of the aisles are well stocked with a large variety of goods, neat, tidy well arranged. But the best part of it is that G Express became the first place where it was so clean I could see my own reflection in the floor! THE FLOOR! Alright, it's not like looking straight into a mirror but the are definite outlines and facial features visible, I could clearly see me - in the floor! Awesome floor. This tiny little convenience store on Stoke Newington High Street is convenient indeed. Especially…read morewhen you are in search of somewhere locally to send a fax from. Having fruitlessly tried the library, I found this little shop will send faxes for you. They sell stamps too, which is very helpful when the main post office further down the road has a queue as long as the Great Wall of China. Service is very friendly and efficient, and it's nice to have someone serving who knows what they're doing. (I've given up sending faxes from Hamdy's opposite, as they charge you differently each time, and when you ask them why, they admit they don't know how much to charge!!! Not that they bother to find out for next time.) There are lots of greetings cards in here too (of the cheesy 'Darling Daughter' and 'Congratulations you are 5' variety).

The floor and shelves are not really up to the usual Waitrose standards and it's always very cramped and narrow. On a positive, they are open later than any other "supermarket" in the immediate area, which is especially good on Sunday when most close at 5pm, and Waitrose closes at 11pm. Overall, if you need a Waitrose fast, pop in here without any expectations, otherwise make your way to the far larger one up the road (5 min bus ride)

This so much better than the tesco express round the corner but has a very limited range of fruits/veg and loads of wine......I fail to see the problem. In other news there is the expected large range of lunch food and ready meals with some surprising additions such as gourmet lentils and gourmet chocolates. Perfect for an emergency shop on the way home from work. The staff are always great and they have at least two people on the tills for oldies like me who hate those self service thingies. Even better the hours are great open from 7am to 10pm daily and its right outside Highbury and Islington Station. Good work oh serial defiler of wallets :)
