I suggest wearing good shoes- especially for the descent as there are loose rocks. I didn't need my hiking poles on the way up yet they were handy coming back down. The rock type is Andesite lava & Rhyolite (I had to look it up). Really fascinating topography. Limited parking available at parking lot at main entrance. It is free however there is a donation box for the Napa Open Space District.

It's dog-friendly and one of the only trails I've been on locally where everyone has respected the rule that dogs need to be on leash at all times, which is nice. It's not typically heavily trafficked, and you can go miles without seeing another person. It's particularly beautiful in the fall when the vines start changing colors. Parking usually isn't too difficult. I recommend slapping on some sunscreen before hitting the trail and bringing a hat and sunnies because there's not very much tree coverage. It can get very hot during the summer, so starting earlier in the day is advisable.

The campground is small but charming, nestled between Calistoga and Saint Helena -- a true hidden gem. We've driven by this park so many times on our way to Calistoga. Finally got to check it out and experience it. It's surrounded trees and the soothing sounds of a creek , offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of nearby towns. Trails and even a swimming pool that's open on the weekends. The park is well-maintained, with clean bathrooms and a great atmosphere. It was our first time using the rooftop tent, and this spot couldn't have been more ideal. We're already planning to come back and explore more of the park!

Has a small to medium sized field full of green grass for your dog to play around in. They also have a nice playground with swings, a mini playground structure with slide, jungle gym, and spring car/spring motorcycle. Bumps near dilapidated picnic area make cool mini BMX trail for kids to ride on. Path around field makes for good 30 second bike loop if you're fast.

Did you know that the Old Faithful Geyser of Calistoga is only one of 3 Old Faithful Geysers in the…read morewhole world? So named because of the regularity in which it erupts? Well it is. For the price of $15 per adult and $9 for child, you get the privilege of watching it erupt for about 3 minutes per hour or so. There are constantly available Groupons for this place so do yourself the favor of seeking one out before you come so you can save a few pennies. There are some other attractions on site, like horses and donkeys, maybe a llama, but it was warm the day of our visit so I took part in none of that and just sat in the shaded seating areas resting and waiting. I suppose if I wanted to stay closer to 2 hours, or 3, I could have watched this thing erupt for a second time but of course I did not do that. I will say that the Old Faithful Geyser in Rotorua, New Zealand requires someone to pour in a surfactant to prompt an eruption and this one requires no similar stimulus so I guess this one in Calistoga is more....unprompted? Authentic? I am no geologist, just musing. All in all, this was a relatively family-friendly thing to do while we were already in Calistoga and I'm pleased to announce I have visited all three Old Faithful Geysers in the whole world. This was not a goal of mine but I inadvertently accomplished this feat by stopping by here so Five Stars for that alone.

Please save your money, and go to Yellow Stone. There are no Geysers here. None! Yet they charge…read more$30 for two. Yellow Stone charges $30 for a week, of your vehicle full of people. Plus, you are going to enjoy days of amazing beauty, and Geysers. I was very disappointed of this place. Unfortunately they are stealing money as there is nothing to see. Hiked the Oat Hill Mine Road from the Silverado Trail, Calistoga on Sun 12/12/10. We hiked w/ the…read moreNapa Land Trust starting at 9am, I got up really early to do this hike. Parking - across from the pizza place La Prima (Lake St & Lincoln Ave) or next to the Trailhead. No Bathrooms - just gotta pee in the off to the side of the trail or find a bush. We did the Lower Oat Hill Mine Trail & lunch at Holms Place. Then we went off trail cross country to Point Duff & had great views of Mt St Helena w/ fog under it. Pretty cool. We didn't go to Duff cave w/ platform, but saw a cave - I didn't go up to get a close look, others did. Started 9am, finished 3:40pm with lots of breaks. We did about 11 miles round trip. Advice: Go on a clear day or when there's 10% chance of rain or less. There were a bunch of crazy mountain bikers that don't tell you they are coming up or down so be careful. Didn't see ticks Sun 12/12/10, but saw them 5/13/07.

I was able to read some of the book from the Library of Congress archives and found Oliver Evans wrote the guide and patented his design in 1790, the year the patent office was formed, before patents were numbered. In 1804 they retroactively assigned him patent number (X3) three. He licensed his design to hundreds of people including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. He became the first American to live off of intellectual property income.

It was about $14 each to enter, which was a little pricey for what we saw. You are able to do the entire space under an hour if you so wish. The people who work here are kind. There is a gift shop with both gifts and drinks. There were rudimentary women and mens restrooms. And plenty of free parking out front. You can check out the petrified woods up close. They also have a lot of informational plaques around.

It's about a mile total around the inner loop + the out and back for some additional scenery. It is a little hilly but not too bad, my 65 year old mother was able to walk the entirety of the loop. The petrified wood is pretty cool along with all of the lava stone and ash. The trees are pretty huge. It was $14 which I thought was a little steep for how much (or little) there was to see, but I don't regret going.

Table Rock trail is located within Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. The road to get to the…read moretrailhead is directly north of Calistoga on Highway 29-about 20 minutes from the downtown. There are no facilities and parking can be hard to come by, as there are just two small lots. You're competing with other hikers who might be climbing up Mt St Helena. Mileage wise, the trail signs indicate 4.2 miles round trip. So, while the distance is short, the trail itself is moderate to challenging. There are sections both going in and out with an incline. While the inclines and declines aren't terribly steep, it's the loose rocks, downed trees and washed out trail sections that make it more challenging. I do wish I brought hiking poles to navigate the downhills and found myself tripping a few times, The scenery is quite unique with interesting rock formations along the way. The end of this trail, at Table Rock itself is spectacular, especially in winter when the valley below is green. The area did suffer from fires back in 2017 so there are a lot of burned trees and scrubby landscape. Interesting hike and worth checking out at least once. If you're up for more of a challenge, the trail continues to the Palisades trail and eventually connects down to the Oat Hill Mine trail in Calistoga. Good workout, scenic and not too crowded. Bring water and layers. It's exposed for much of the uphills and I was sweating but then cold and windy at the top. Minus 1 star for the challenging parking situation and washed out (but passable) sections.

Only saw 4 other people, a couple on their way out and a couple on their way in (when we were on our way out). It was quiet and peaceful. The parking lot adjacent to it was nearly full. There was another trail entrance across the road from this one that seemed more popular.

Calistoga Pioneer Cemetery is a haunting place. Perched on the side of a cliff, it is a final…read moreresting place for Civil War veterans and Donner Party survivors. A local Boy Scout troop recently made a guide to the cemetery, which dates back to the 1870s. Many original records have been lost, for there are faded tombs where the names have faded into eternity. It's not an easily accessible cemetery- the most one can do is park across the street&find a way across Highway 29/128. There are stories of the cemetery being haunted, of the presence of apparitions, it has that kind of an atmosphere. What was once a quiet cemetery is now beside a busy highway, trying to rest in peace.
