That seemed to be a pretty normal time to arrive, as there was a line from the door to the street, but we were let in in groups fairly quickly (within 20 minutes). They will check your bag, but will not pat you down. There are four long flights of stairs to get up as well! So think ahead if you have physical disabilities. At the start of the night, the line for the coat check was absolutely huge. I would recommend dancing/waiting with your coat/bag for a while if you can and coming back to the coat check further into the event, as the line will be shorter and quicker. It was €2 to check a coat or bag- if you want to check both you have to pay €4. The people working the coat check are definitely some of the rudest people I've seen as club employees anywhere, but just roll with it. Avoid the young woman with dark hair and a septum ring if you can at the coat check- she has no patience for anyone who hasn't been there before and will roll her eyes and push your stuff back at you aggressively if you put it on the counter too fast. There were 2 different bars, so you could usually get a drink pretty quickly. Prices on the drink card aren't what you'll pay! I have no idea why. (Ex: tequila shots are listed as €5 each, but I paid €6 for 2.) This might be a European thing (coming from an American) but people really like their personal space at this club. Bumping into other people repeatedly will get you annoyed/strange looks, and it's definitely not a body to body, shoulder to shoulder type of place.

Uebel & Gefährlich is one of the many mid-sized concert venues in Hamburg. It's located in the…read moremassive concrete WW2 bunker in St Pauli, just next to the Millerntor Stadium. On the way in they search your bags, but don't pad you down. Once past security and the initial ticket check you get to the lift area. There are three lifts, two that hold 8 maximum (by design spec.) but actually generally hold 10 crammed in, and one huge lift that holds more like 20 people. Uebel & Gefährlich is on the 4th floor. There are stairs, but for whatever reason you're not allowed to use them. I went to see Gogol Bordello, and the place was absolutely rammed. It was literally quite hard to get into the main room as there were so many people - you had to push! If there was a fire, we probably would have all died. Despite that, or perhaps because of it I'm giving this venue 5/5. The atmosphere was electric. Everyone gets a good view because of the tiered nature of the room. The beer isn't extortionate (EUR2.50 for Astra, EUR3 for other 330ml bottles). There are two cloakrooms around the back, one further down the corridor than the other, and use of said cloakrooms is a further EUR1. I initially stood at the back (next to a bar), but decided I wanted to get closer to the action. Upon starting pushing my way forward I noticed a corridor that went off to the side of the main room. I reasoned that perhaps I could walk around and come out at the front - I was right! Down the corridor past one of the central bars it opens up into a chilled area with sofas and tables, and another bar. It would have been a great area on a club night, but I wanted to see the band, so I continued through and found myself just behind the main mosh pit, which is basically exactly where I wanted to be, brilliant! I should note that on my many subsequent visits, half of the club has often been closed off when smaller bands are playing. If there's any chance that you might want to sit and watch (rather than stand) I'd advise you to get there when the doors open as the seating is very limited.

We went up to the bouncer to ask him what time this place closed and he was very unfriendly, unwelcoming, and acted like he was discriminative. The bouncer said something in German and literally pushed me to the side. I didn't say anything to offend him so I was surprised why he even pushed me - let alone touch me! I felt disrespected and belittled and so I called the police. The police officer that came was a woman who surprisingly did not take the time to ask me why I called them. She immediately spoke with the staff of this night club and they spoke in German. She then came towards me to grab my cell phone to delete any pictures which I took of the bouncer who disrespected me by pushing me. She then sought the help of the bouncer to come and grab me to help handcuff me. Why did she hand cuff me when I called the police?! I kept telling her I'm the one that called the police for help and she disregarded me and had a smirk on her face. She told me the bouncer speaks German and that he told her that I was threatening them that I would kill them. Who would believe that someone who goes on vacation and just wants to check out this place would be accused of threatening to kill them?! How ridiculous is that? I told her take me to the police station because I don't trust you and I need to talk to someone else. When we got to the police station, she said to me everything is okay we won't arrest you but you have to pay me 120 Euros. I told her I'm not paying anything because I didn't do anything wrong! I told her I need to call my US embassy and after speaking to the US embassy they let me go. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE WHO VISITS HAMBURG, GERMANY! WHAT A GARBAGE PLACE! I have specific photos of those who treated me unfairly that work in this place in case anyone wants to know who these disrespectful people are! I really didn't want to select any stars but Yelp would not let me post this review without choosing even 1 star!!!

Grosse Freiheit 36 is where the mid-level to big bands often play in Hamburg. I was last here a few weeks ago to see Bon Iver, who were originally meant to be playing Knust (but I guess it sold out), they were then moved to Uebel & Garfarlich, and then finally to Grosse Freiheit 36 - this should give you an idea of the pecking order of some of the venues in Hamburg :) The place is pretty huge and on two levels - almost certainly an old theatre. There are bars everywhere, and while the alcohol choice isn't great, the prices are not so terrible (still expensive compared to a normal bar though). My only slight annoyance is that the toilets are annoyingly located just to one side of the stage, which if you're at the other side can mean quite a lot of pushing and "sorry" to get to.

Relatively big dancefloor and cool design inside. The average clubber in here is about 20 and pretty much into electro. Amazing DJ's hit this place regularly, so you might be surprised by the quality of the music from time to time. One thing that gets annoying through the night is that it's an underground club and the air conditioning can't always keep up with all the people inside, also because smoking is allowed inside. Nevertheless this is a bomb club in Hamburg's favorite partying area; definitely always worth the night!

I've spent many-an-hour in the Waagenbau office, drinking beer and watching movies on DVD or painful BMX bloopers on Youtube. Parties at the Waagenbau are always different. I'm a fan of electronic music, so Strom (electro) and Hoch10 (Drum n' Bass) are the evenings in which you'll normally find me there. The Waagenbau has many one-off parties and special international guests, so check their website for the program or pick up a flyer (which are scattered all around the Schanze). Their dance-hall area is roomy enough (but when it gets packed, it gets packed, the bar area is comfortable for both the "sit and drink"-ers and the "stand and talk"-ers. Waagenbau have a kicker table and a coatroom, and there's even a radio station hidden inside (but I didn't tell you that). The Waagenbau crew are all great people, some of which are exceptionally creative - it shows in the Waagenbau's flyers, photos and promotions - all in-house jobs. The bartenders enjoy their jobs and it shows. The Waagenbau can also be rented for private venues and events, but the noise of the S-bahn going past (above your head, every four minutes) makes it not such a good place for a presentation (we've tried). Having a closed-zone for a birthday party as party of one of Waagenbau's standard weekend parties works well, though! I realize that I'm very biased, it's impossible for me to write a standard review from the point of view of someone who knows the Waagenbau on different, less personal, terms. But I honestly love the Waagenbau, and hope you will, too.

Was only let in after I mentioned I was an American then the lady at the door tried to play it all cool and they let me in. I was dressed very well, blazer, dress shoes etc. They took one look at me and were like were do you think your going. When I asked why I couldn't get in they said it was because they didn't "know me". Utterly ridiculous. Once inside the place was nothing special at all. Full of lumpenpack really. In the US such policies would cause a public outcry by both whites and nonwhites alike and the place would get sued out of existence within a week. But not in Germany. In germany the patrons are glad they don't have to rub elbows with brown people. Google German club racist door policies and you will see it's a prevalent problem all over Germany. Before this place i got turned down at 4 other clubs for the same reason. I think that Germany is unfortunately fundamentally a racist country. Unlike the US where anyone of any ethnic background will be fully accepted in society as a fellow American regardless of skin color, this is simply not so and probably never will be in Germany.
