The wait for my lunch was…read morea bit too much but I guess they spent that time preparing a really nice meal for two because the salad immediately followed the soup. The prices are a bit high, but I think the quality justifies them. The tomato soup was rich and creamy with a delicious fresh flavor. I think they could have made it a tad better by keeping the proportion of tomatoes to condiments high. The veggie salad was quite good. The best part is the ambience, especially on a sunny day. There were people just lounging around on the fatboys or using one of the picnic tables. The interior is grand and the toilets clean. Good location. Will come back for some soup.

I was recommended by my Dutch friend to try the steak at Loetje, and I wasn't disappointed!…read more My friend and I came by Loetje Oost around 6:30 on Sunday evening and there was plenty of seating available. I had made a reservation right beforehand on their website, but I definitely didn't need it. There's a nice patio outside, but because it was starting to get a bit chilly in the evening, we opted to sit inside. My friend got the Thai chicken soup ($8) to start and had the chicken satay skewers ($18.50) for his entree. Interestingly enough, the restaurant was out of chicken (is that really a thing?) so the Thai chicken soup because a Thai veggie soup instead. He didn't mind though, and really liked it as it had a nice coconut flavor. The chicken skewers were good as well. I went straight for the steak and ordered a medium sized beef tenderloin with their garlic gravy ($27.50). The server asked if I wanted fries with that, but I went with a healthier apple compote side for $3.50 instead. I absolutely LOVED my steak, and that's quite rare for me as I'm generally not a steak person. I was a bit worried because she didn't ask how I wanted the steak cooked, but I guess here the default is to cook it on the rarer side and I certainly didn't mind! The steak is served swimming in a pool of gravy, which I've never seen before. Each bite was super tender, and the garlic gravy it came with was super salty so by dipping the meat into the sauce, that guaranteed the meat was flavorful enough. The apple compote was delicious as well, but I wish it was served warm instead of cold. I was very happy with my decision to come here for my first meal in Amsterdam!

That didn't bother us because we weren't in the market for dinner so we just ordered some beer and dessert. We ended up hanging out for so long that we decided to order dinner. We both ordered burgers. I added Gorgonzola to my burger, which was strong and stinky. My motto is: the stinkier the cheese the better, so this suited me nicely. The bread was a little hard for my liking, but the flavor was top notch. This place has a ton of ambiance, as it's set inside shipping containers. It's a great place for a snack, dessert and coffee, or a full on meal.

They were extremely apologetic when they mistakenly served me a burger with mayo after I explained I was allergic to eggs. Maybe I've grown accustomed to the "modest" level of service in Amsterdam but the responsiveness of this staff to this mistake was beyond what I expected. The burger though was just ok. Too salty. Overdone for my taste. The bun was odd and chewy. I did like the tomato relish they used as a replacement for mayo. The fries were not special. My fellow diner complained at how literal the goat cheese salad was. Mixed greens with a bunch of goat cheese. Not much else. My recommendation...go for a drink. Check it out. Really the design of the interior is worth a stop. Take a risk with the menu and maybe you'll find something you'll like.
