We stayed in October, but the amount of tourists flooding this tiny waterfront town was astounding. I can't imagine what it's like in summer. Thus most hotel prices in town were still extremely high ($300 a night??), and this was the only affordable one advertising through Priceline. A free shuttle drove us from the P1 parking lot. The hotel owner was not pleased with our presumably late arrival at 8 or 9pm. Our room was on the third floor (no elevator). The bathrooms/showers were shared. In our room was a sink and a heater, which we made use of. There was an electronic tea kettle available outside the room, although no cups in sight. There was also a communal microwave and mini- fridge. No utensils or plates, though... Since the sleepy town didn't come alive until 9am or so on a weekday, our frantic morning search for coffee ended in a fancy hotel nearby. Tips for staying here: 1. Bring cash - no cards accepted. 2. Bring your own cups and utensils if you plan to make your own hot beverage or eat leftovers. If I visit Hallstatt again, I plan to stay in Obertraun, closer to the ice caves. The hotels there are less expensive and not very far from Hallstatt.

First off, Hallstatt is adorably tiny and has…read morelimited real estate which means hotel prices can get pretty expensive if you can even find any in the summer tourist season. After taking a hard look at the $200-300/day options, we decided on Cafe Restaurant zum Muhlbach as it was one of the few that were reasonably priced. The owner (I think) was friendly and spoke English well. She also helped us find the closest swimming spot and someone brought our luggage to our room while we were out. Awesome! The room itself is small and nondescript but we did have a pretty patio with a fabulous view of the lake. The shared bathrooms (which I was dreading) was actually not an issue at all. On our floor alone there were 3; they looked renovated and were super clean! The only thing I had a major issue with was the quality of the bedding. I get that we're not paying for the Ritz, but the slippery, polyestery, heat-trapping sheets and blankets in a non-air conditioned room on a hot June night was unbearable. I had a terrible night's sleep and was thankful to only stay one night. Overall it's a fine B&B for the price and the bedding issue is such an easy one to remedy. I couldn't sleep at all but others may find it ok. The location is super central and there's an affectionate chubby cat for company.

For a base of operations within walking of many of the old city sites it serves the purpose. Rooms are small but typical Euro including the lack of any shower curtain or door leaving a ridiculously inadequate barrier. If rating European hotels on their ability to douche the entire bathroom floor with the shower this would be a 10 (meaning you should probably build an ark!) Fixtures and lighting have all been modernized, the wifi internet is free with a password and faster than many upscale places I have stayed in and the bedding is comfortable. What is lacking is air conditioning so a stay here in summer can feel like a sauna (I recommend room 10 which faces a shaded back courtyard and is quiet, cooler and comes with a cool dwarf sized door cut into the cement for entry!) breakfast included in your rate and is a reasonable Euro selection of charcuterie, bread, fruit and cereal. For those of you addicted to a brand name experience, a stunning breakfast buffet and a spa within, go elsewhere. But to have a period experience in Salzburg, I would stay here again.

This place is a perfect place for a family to stay to be close to the old town. The reason it gets 5 stars is for service. Unbelievably knowledgeable and helpful.
