Because we had a full day of escape rooms, we didn't have much time to explore Edinburgh. But we will definitely be back to check out its history. Escape Edinburgh currently have 3 different locations. The location that we are visiting today - Morrison Street is their newest and we loved where it was situated. This location is in the basement of the "Noughts & Coffees" cafe store and you can find many types of board games there to play for an unlimited time for just £3.50 per person. It's a great place to be after an escape game to chat with friends, get a cup of coffee and play more games! When we went down the stairs to enter Escape Edinburgh's lobby area, there wasn't much space or decor there except for two benches to sit and wait. After being debriefed by our friendly game master, we quickly entered their newest room - "Sub Zero". The storyline was that we needed to destroy the evidence left on a missing submarine and escape before it's too late! As we entered the room, the decor immediately transported us into a submarine embarking on an underwater experience. However, we did mention later to the game master that one of the clues were rather hard to see and we wasted a good amount of time on that even though we knew what we're supposed to do. The puzzle designs and props that were used correlated with the storyline the entire time except for one particular puzzle that had some very confusing wordings on the clue. Overall, we enjoyed the latter part of the game a lot more as the puzzles were more creative and unique. With two people, we escaped with some time to spare. In addition, we also had the privilege to take a sneak peek inside the two other rooms that they currently offer: "221B Baker Street" and "The Magic Emporium". If you only have time for one game there, we suggest that you try "The Magic Emporium" room. The set design was quite intriguing as it looked like you've been transported to Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. I've done 20+ escape rooms and this was one of the best!! The room was well-designed, the puzzles were clever without being frustrating, and the storyline and decorations were interesting. The attendant was friendly and welcoming. The attendant told us this was one of the harder rooms. It was a complicated room with lots of parts to keep track of, but not necessarily difficult. I might avoid the Experiment room if you are a group of beginners and aren't too familiar with escape rooms. Pros: Great puzzles, challenging, well-paced, friendly staff, good location, student discount!!! Total was £72 for 6 people. Cons: 6-person limit, but that seems to be the standard in Edinburgh, and it would have been crowded with 7+ people. I can't wait to visit again and try another room!

If you live locally or come to the city often, sure, make your way to the zoo eventually. They have some great events: social for new parents to meet other new parents, afternoon teas, photography workshops, and more. They are home to more than 2,500 animals including: camels, monkeys, pelicans, zebras, highland cows (...obviously), giraffes (a four back of bachelors named Arrow, Gerald, Fennessy, and Gilbert), a red panda, tigers, meerkats, a bear, a very large penguin pool with LOTS of gentoo, king, and rockhopper penguins (you can watch them live on the zoo's website!), flamingos (their oldest one was born in 1961!), and more. Unfortunately, you won't see all of them when you visit: I would say about 30% of them weren't there (for various reasons: rehoming, new structures being built, vet visits, it was the wrong time of day, etc.) when I came. There is, however - and this won't make sense unless you've seen it - an unexpectedly LARGE dinosaur presence here. IYKYK. Thankful for the conservation work they do here and in the protection of endangered species around the world, but I'm not sure this is a spot I need to have repeat visit at.

They were having a musical festival while we were there and over lunch, all of the locals were there having lunch, listening to music and just enjoying the day. Take your umbrella because storms come and go, but we were fortunate to have a short 30 minute rainstorm and then absolutely beautiful weather beyond. This was one of my favorite stops on our cruise. Edinburgh is beautiful and this park is a relaxing respite from the craziness of the day.

Leith Links, one of Edinburgh council's premier parks is situated in the heart of Leith, just near…read morethe bottom of Leith Walk. This green delight is squeezed between three streets, with large houses looking over the park on East Hermitage Place. The park is large and has numerous walkways cutting throughout. As I walked around it I noticed that this park provides space for many sports. It has a bowling green which is across from Duncan Place. Furthermore, it is home to the local amateur football team Leith Athletic (Unsure how good this team would be to watch and how good they are in comparison to local favourites Hibernian!). Also, the park has two children play areas, one with slightly larger slides and playing frames. The park was quite busy when I went for a visit to it, with it being very popular with joggers and young families. There are plenty of big green spaces to relax in the sun, however, in colder weather I would imagine this park, with being so close to the sea would be pretty cold at best!

Leith Links is north Edinburgh's answer to the Meadows, a beautiful and extensive green oasis…read morecriss-crossed with paths, dotted with playgrounds, and the perfect place for a stroll, a run, or to walk your dog. It's actually much quieter than the Meadows and doesn't get overrun with picnicking students, making it a much more tranquil place to spend time (although the north east corner can get a bit whiffy due to the nearby sewage works). At the same time, the Links still have a lot going on, from allotments and a Children's Orchard located in their midst to visiting circuses. The park also plays host to regular festivals such as the Leith Festival in June and the Edinburgh Mela in August. Another claim to fame is that, although no longer used as a golf course, it is the place where the rules were first laid down, making it officially the home of golf - take that St Andrews!

I'm not a golfer, so I can only comment on the aesthetic qualities of this public golf course!…read more It's the first one of its kind I've come across and knowing how expensive golf memberships can be, I think it's a fantastic idea. Having relocated to Bruntsfield for the last month or so, I've had to walk through the Links to the adjoining Meadows park at least fifty times! It's been pleasant and relaxing though, and like all the public parks in Edinburgh it's wonderfully maintained; old gnarley trees not out of place in Edins and plenty of plush, green grass! Size-wise, there are no extensive holes, and I'd say it's a place better designed to practice putting. It's well utilized by the location population, usually irrespective of the weather, and for the non-golfing folk such as myself, it's a great place to relax with a book or have a little picnic. Granted you MIGHT get hit in the head by a golf ball, but there are areas where this risk is significantly reduced.

The Links are a hillier alternative to Meadows. It's also way emptier most of the time. Beware of…read moregolfers, though. They're merciless, or at least I generally assume they are. I'd say it's a safe assumption to make of all people who wield metal rods. And hit things with it. On purpose. Rumour goes that the Links are hilly because there are thousands of plague victims buried there. The same goes for Greyfriar's Graveyard. But that makes more sense than a public park. The Links has a spectacular view of Arthur's Seat (on the days there isn't fog and generally miserable weather), and as you walk up towards the end of the park and look up towards Bruntsfield you'll get a great glimpse of the waterfront too. In the Summertime, it's a perfect place to go if you're feeling particularly sentimental at around 4 in the morning after a party or two, to watch the sunrise. Yes, the sun rises around 4-5 am here now. You may as well go crazy and watch the sunset around 10-11 from there too!

There also is a little cafe, which is attached to the local 14th century Duddingston Kirk. We stopped at the café before visiting the amazingly hidden away jewel of a garden that lets you relax in a very peaceful environment and just beside Duddingston lake. An oasis indeed. I believe that the café is run by volunteers. They serve coffee/ tea and other soft drinks and cakes. There are toilets inside and outside. Prices are good. It's a jewel. Go and visit to see for yourselves It's also open during the winter, I believe.

I started at Dean Village, and walked through Dean Garden to the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. It was a nice alternative to walking the city streets or taking transport to the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, which was my destination. It took me just about an hour at an easy stroll with brief stops to take a few pictures. I sent a few of those pictures to some girlfriends and their comments were, "It's like you're in a storybook" and "Gorgeous, that can't be real." Take a look at the pictures and see if you agree. Or better yet, take a walk and see for yourself!
