This has been our vet for years and they are just so good with animals here. I never see any "exotic" animals, but dogs and cats get great care. Before I add my very rude experience with these people, I'll say - upon reading the reviews, if you haven't been coming here for 20+ years - they don't want your business. My dog had an upset stomach and ear ache. Red flag one, I told her what was happening and she said "sore throat and diarrhea", not at all what I said. She ain't ask my name, just walked off. Upon return the front desk clerk says "all Vet's are in surgery". That's it. No offer to look at appointments but a very eager willingness to tell me to go somewhere else. I understand not having availability, but her ton, rudeness, and eye rolling was not needed. Mind you - I have a very expensive breed and she's well kept. My niece and I brought her sweet kitty to Dr. Taylor for stomatitis, poor thing was in pain. As with a lot of fur babies, her feline wasn't "feline" going to the vet. The office evaluated her sitch via telephone and fit her in quickly. To make matters worse, it was especially a sensitive time due to the coronavirus. Nervous pets and nervous pet parents... we all want to go in with our furry family members to reassure them. But alas, she had to drop her cat at the door. The staff was compassionate and took the appropriate precautions with PPE and signage. After her surgery, we waited outside to be called to pick up Mabel, her kitty. To ease the burden of the reasonable fees, they offered a payment plan. Again, the staff was accommodating and sympathetic. Mabel was still recovering from her surgery, and once home, we settled her in to recoup. The surgery went well and Mabel is "feline" better! No kitten, our experience was litter-ally "clawless". It never occurred to me to yelp our vet until I saw that a friend had done so. So let me tell you about this practice. This story predates the pandemic. We inherited my mother in law's kitty boy Merlyn when she went into a nursing home. Merlyn lived with us for several years. As these things happen, over the course of a few days we became aware that he was not well. We called Dr. Taylor's office for treatment. The doctor examined him and did some xrays, and came to us with the bad news. The very bad news. We were stunned. But he as so empathetic, so caring, so gentle with us and with Merlyn. He patiently explained what was going wrong for Merlyn, and what he was feeling, and how things would progress untreated. He took time to answer questions and was in no hurry, he was there as long as we needed. He made the decision easy for us, and we let good old Merlyn go. We were so sad, but I cannot express how much better the situation was made by a caring vet and his team. They really kept us from feeling alone, made sure we were ready, and helped us through a difficult time. We have lost pets before, more than a few. Some veterinarians seem to lose interest and get hyper-clinical and almost aloof once they see that there is nothing medical or surgical that can be done. Thank goodness there are a few that actually seem to care more about the patients than the business end of this. This vet is a keeper. read more

Locke Taylor is still a five star experience. Today was my first time going inside this location and I like it a lot more than the original Woodman location. It smells better and the front desk folks seem like they are a lot more personable. They were able to get to my dog quickly, which I appreciated. They took my concerns seriously and called me with an update just about 30 minutes later. I wasn't expecting to hear from them so soon, but was glad I did. The doctor is really caring and I feel good knowing that she is taking my dog's condition seriously and springing into action. Hopefully there is a good outcome with our situation, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this vet regardless. read more

I am only giving 1 star because I have to leave something. I am very disappointed in the way this staff treated not only my mother and sister, but our beloved family dog. There was no compassion, no "tender care" and I hate to even think that when the staff took him away from his family "to insert the catheter" what was going through his head. We will never know, because when he returned, he was so severely "sedated" he was already gone. Thanks a lot for that, staff. You made a not good memory into a terrible one for this entire family. I live out of state, but am from Richmond and used Dr. Taylor many years ago. I think expansion, in this case, has taken away something that should be very valuable to the practice. That is care. If this is how you treat animals, and their human companions, you do not deserve to be in business. Should I ever move back, I will not ever seek out their services. I have been bringing my pets to Locke Taylor's (Woodman Road office) for almost 20 years, and I've always had an excellent experience. Every single vet we have seen has been kind, knowledgeable, caring, and collaborative. Every vet tech and vet assistant has been personable, efficient, and great with our pets. The front desk staff manage a flurry of multi-tasking with patience and efficiency and somehow remain personable as well. Lastly, their prices are very fair and their level of service is top notch. I am so grateful for them that even after moving 35 minutes away, I still drive in to them, passing multiple other vets on the way. read more

Caveat emptor! I've always valued Locke Taylor's care for my two dogs, until one, German Shepard/Boxer mix, ca 9 yrs old, began splaying hind legs on smooth surfaces. Xray. I'm told it shows CCL, both stifle. I don't see it, doesn't look like a knee problem but I'm told it's there, subtle. Surgery, TPLO, is recommended, over the phone. We relocate about this time, so I search for surgeons near our new home in PA. [I find one, who schedules the 1st of 2 surgeries (both knees), but he hedges; the problem is probably more 'neurological', yet he was still going to perform the surgeries, for $10,000.] Fortunately a friend identifies the problem right away, having experienced the same with his dog. DM, easily recognized from the web as her hind paws were badly scuffed from dragging and diagnosed to a degree with DNA; she had both copies of the SOD1 variant. Yet a useless, expensive operation was recommended, which would not have helped her in the least but the business for several grand. I can now spot this affliction 100 yards away; why couldn't they? The time and money wasted on braces and harnesses ... and hope! I mention both vet experiences, because they were similar. Help the business with expensive operations, the dog will die from DM anyway. A customer obviously in love with his dog and willing to pay. The disease progressed. She gradually lost use of her hind legs completely, followed by incontinence, kidney problems, euthanasia. Inevitable. But the operations? Caveat Emptor! read more

We miss the way this vet used to be. We continue to get notices about our dog years after he died, which we have let them know many, many times. These notices telling us he was overdue for shots were first upsetting and eventually annoying. We also repeatedly keep getting notices that its time for tests for our current puppy. It isn't. We love Dr. Taylor, but it's so hard to get him when a pet is sick, and we've had a couple other doctors that gave conflicting information and are always pushing for more expensive options. We love some of the ladies up front, but as an office, they are just too disorganized. Over and over, we'd not have calls returned and been given incorrect information. We wish them well but have moved to another vet which we've found to be so responsive and attentive, that they're a much better fit for us. read more

Took my cats here for 2+ years while I lived in RVA. Super responsive, always able to get them in for sick visits. Also they diagnosed my cat with chronic pancreatitis and put her on a regimen that controlled her symptoms after a prior vet had said she was just eating too quickly. read more

I have had mixed feelings about this place in the past and I have come to the conclusion after today's visit that it truly matters who you see. We take our dog and cat to the Woodman Rd. location. Our cat is extremely fear aggressive in vet situations and for the entire 12 years I have had him, he has had to be sedated every single time he has gone to the vet (even just to be examined). Today, he saw Dr. Lynch and she was just wonderful (this was our first time seeing her). Even though they were busy (they usually are, which I actually take as a good sign!), Dr. Lynch listened to our concerns and made sure that everything we needed done was done. Dave McGrady, the assistant, professed that he was the "cat guy" and promised me he should be able to handle our kitty without sedation. I was like, sure, Dave. Good luck. They took kitty back into a quiet room (at my request) to try and handle him -- and returned less than 10 minutes later with a non-sedated cat who had all of the testing/shots done! Dave said he didn't even have to use gloves. I was blown away -- this has NEVER happened. I want to thank Dr. Lynch and Dave, because now our poor old man cat doesn't have to be drugged once a year, which is so much healthier for him! It was just a much less stressful experience all around. Last year, our cat saw a different doctor and assistant, and the experience (while medically successful) was a bit less pleasant -- hence my initial comments that it depends on who you see here. I think the same could be said for any vet clinic/doctor's office/etc. Also, I see that some reviews mention the front desk staff being rude. I completely disagree. While sometimes they may seem busy/hurried, I have never been treated anything but very politely by anyone at the front desk. We'll keep bringing our animals here! read more

My baby girl Aspen was one sick fur baby, she had a bone stuck in her throat , it was over weekend and I rushed her to emergency vet and it was like being on a rodeo ride, so I took her home and just prayed I could make it to Dr. Taylor office Monday am, cause they had years ago saved her brother from car accident. Well we made it , I wanted her in the best care and knew at this veterinary client was were she needed to be . We had to have surgery Tuesday . She done amazing , but there were some ups and downs but all the caring Vets and staff were right there calling me keeping me posted daily. After 3 days there she's coming home today, I knew they would take such good care of her. When you come to this office you are in the best care for your fur baby. The staff and team of vet asst and vets are so passionate about your animals here. It's a drive for me , but no drive is to long for the best vet care. I know that everyone says this, but I really am not one to write a review for a business, especially a bad review. I have been going to the Parham location with my cat over the past 3 years. Throughout these years, I have had very pleasant experiences with the vets and vet techs. My roommate had the same experience with her older cat. This past experience, however, was extremely unfortunate. She got a new kitten, and took her to her first appointment at the Parham location. The vet diagnosed the kitten with feline leukemia, which was extremely traumatic for my roommate and me. She was given very little information about the disease, but was told that the cat basically wouldn't survive and if we had other cats in the house we had to keep them separate. The vet said sometimes kitten "fight it off" but gave no knowledge, statistics, or other information about this false hope, just to keep our cats separated and come back in 3 weeks for a retest to see if she "fought it off". I called the vet office to get some more information, as my roommate came home inconsolable about the diagnosis. I had to leave a message for the nurse, who called back and left me a voicemail saying that the doctor had given detailed information to my roommate (not true) and to look at a website about the disease. That's it. Not, "call back if you have any further questions" not "I'm so sorry, I know this must be very difficult". We have 2 other cats in the house, and needed to know what to do about them regarding their risk to exposure and health, but got zero answers. My roommate's girlfriend called a different vet where the kitten got her first shots and they asked her to bring her in for a blood test right away, the same day. The blood test came back negative for feline leukemia the following morning...the Locke Taylor vet office had done a quick test and not a blood test. I don't understand why they wouldn't double check the diagnosis with a blood test, or at least offer to do so, especially since the disease is fatal. My roommate has called the Locke Taylor vet about 5 times over the past week and has left messages to get more answers, but has received no communication back. It is honestly shocking to me that they diagnosed her with a fatal disease, said good luck basically, and didn't provide any information or additional testing. We trusted them as the experts in their field. We will obviously be switching vets. read more

This clinic and Dr. Dolan are awesome! I would totally recommend him to anyone looking for a vet. He never tries to up sell you, is honest about care options and will even figure out different courses of treatment to help your pet and not cost you an arm and a leg. I take both my cats and dog to Dr. Dolan and have never had a bad experience. I also had my Dane neutered and his stomach tacked (gastropexy) at this location by Dr. Morgan who has preformed the surgery on some of my friend's Danes as well. If you need surgery services for large dogs such as these she is both knowledgeable and thoughtful! The front desk staff is polite and helpful and I have yet to have any issues with any of my experiences at this clinic. They are doing a great job at providing much needed services to pet owners. read more

I met Dr. Ames last night and his insights on Jack's issues were very helpful. He suggested a procedure saving and money saving alternative to dealing with a dental issue. This used to be a great place to take your dog. I took my dogs here for over 20 years and in the beginning they were great. I'm pretty sure they killed my most recent dog. I can't prove it but after switching to another vet I realized that the vet at this place didn't even run the right tests to diagnose my boys problem so it was too late to save him and possibly they caused the issue in the first place as they did a piss poor job with his dental cleaning and caused some serious infection to happen. This place has the worst front desk service. The staff that works the counter is rude and non-responsive to customer needs. The vet techs are always friendly, but rushed. You get exactly what you ask for - they are not concerned about checking anything on your pet that you don't think to ask about. I am a first time pet owner and my kitten had some ulcers on his mouth, so I was very worried. I had never needed to take him to the vet after I adopted him- but Locke Taylor responded to my email inquiry only hours later and they saw him that same day! I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, however, after our experience I would not recommend this business. They misdiagnosed and mishandled my pet's illness. Based on this diagnosis I left my pet for a fairly standard procedure and returned to find him dying and suffering. The doctor on staff was indifferent, seemed to show no compassion and advised that he was okay to take home. As we walked out the door he commented "Oh, if he passes away, I want to do a postmortem..." Wait, so why are you recommending we take him home? He's fine, just monitor him... We barely made it down the road from for the doctor's office and our pet collapsed. We called the office - help us he's dying, we're on our way back. The office told us, "We're closing, we'll forward your records to an ER" - even though we were just blocks away from their location. We rushed our pet to the closest ER where he was placed in critical care and passed the next day. After reviewing the charts, both the ER physicians remarked all the serious signs were easily recognizable. We were shaken at the disregard for our pet's health and reached out to upper management and were told "suffering is a part of life." I do not want to see anyone else experience the heartbreak we have. We can never get our loved one back. read more

Where do I begin......I adopted a beautiful brown Manx cat back in January for my 12 yo daughters birthday. When we adopted him, I noticed he had a bit of conjunctivitis (pink eye) in his left eye. This is not my first pet. My pomeranian I had for 17 1/2 years, so Im not new to pet parenting. Also, he whined a lot. At first I attributed it to him needing to get settled, but then I realized, something was wrong. I took him to the vet for a complete work up asap to make sure all was well. He was sent home and a $120 bill later I was told he was fine. Keep in mind I told them about the eye on the phone because it was my biggest concern. I was told the eye was fine. Nothing to be concerned about. Months later I returned. Same issues and same doctor saw him. She gave him eye drops and probiotics and antibiotics this time. For the eye that "nothing was wrong with". Third times a charm. I call again this week because now my sweet boy is vomiting and has been for about 2 days. I told them do NOT give me the same doc at Parham. She was dismissive and awful. Id drive to wherever just to not be treated by terrible Kovorkian again. This time we got Dr. Peace. When I tell you this woman is nothing short of amazing. The 1st thing she did was an x-ray and noticed a blockage! She gave me the name and information for an eye specialist in the area after noticing the so evident conjunctivitis, and was able to somewhat narrow down what it was. She was a female Dr. Pole!!! Amazing provider and honest! For her I would give 10 stars, for Dr. Brush off that is based at the Parham office and "specializes" in feline care? She is TRASH! We are in August and almost $500 later we are finally getting somewhere! Anything could have happened, although I did my part! If u dont care about your profession, get out of it. The staff here is super nice! Love the front desk and vet techs but the vets however...are another story. My cat has a plethora of health issues and I had to bring her here frequently for follow up exams and medication. The vet she had was extremely dismissive of me and my concerns for my cat and would always write about how aggressive my cat was and that there was nothing wrong with her. I had to beg multiple times for her to see if there was something bigger happening to my cat but she kept insisting that nothing was wrong and to give her a probiotic and flea treatment and went home. I took her here 4 times for the same issue and the vet kept prescribing topicals but would never listen to my concerns about her possibly having an immune disorder. I finally called a specialist crying my eyes out about my poor cat JUST TO FIND OUT that she did in fact have the exact immune disorder I had brought up in previous conversations. After a lot of time and money wasted at this practice my cat finally has the proper treatment and diagnosis I had been begging for for months. If you want a vet that makes you feel rushed, crazy, stupid, and dramatic come here for sure! I'm glad i trusted my intuition and got a second opinion because seeing my cat struggle due to not properly being treated was an awful thing to see. read more

Just saw a tech let go of a dog in the parking lot. I understand that could've been accident but it's the response that haunts me. The tech threw up his hands and kind of smiled in defeat and then stood there as the dog took off toward Parham in rush hour traffic. Then---nothing--business usual. I expected to see all hands on deck--all staff rushing to rescue this dog. About 10 minutes later I see two staff members jump into a car to pursue the dog, I imagine, but were delayed again as the one tech went back into the building to grab her purse! Clearly, losing someone's pet was NOT considered an emergency. Minutes later, a kind motorist pulled through to let the office know that he had seen a leashes dog running up the highway ramp!!! I can not imagine the shock and grief this owner will experience on behalf of the negligence and carelessness of this staff. I will NEVER take my dogs there again. And I hope the owner is reunited with his doggie. I know how much we love our pets. read more

This is a great vet practice. They saw my dog, Sam, for the final 8-9 years of his life and I never had a bad experience. But it was their care and compassion when it came to Sam's end of life that mattered the most. They were thoughtful, informative, and seemed to be just as upset as we were (Dr. Mason and Dr. Dolan in particular). They also did some major adjusting in the bill that I appreciated (and didn't ask for!!) - no one wants to pay an arm and a leg to lose their best friend. They are so good that even though I am based in DC, I am taking my new dog to them for a trusted opinion. read more

I can not believe all the wonderful reviews for this practice. The Woodman Rd branch is disorganized chaos on a good day, lost faxes, unreturned phone calls and everyone working at the front desk is just plain rude. Quantity of care instead of quality of care should be their motto. Dr. Taylor himself told me they had over 284 patients visiting in a weeks time with 11 vets and 40 staff members in this tiny place. I dealt with them for over 6 months and the most compassionate care I received was when I went to the N Parham office to have my angel put down after another one of the vets from the Woodman branch missed something that should have been caught by them in the first exam. Dr. Scott performed TTA surgery on our Cocker in February 2021. She has since healed, but the most impressive aspect related to her healing was the follow-up, decisive communication and compassion we experienced. If your pet has an issue I strongly advocate that you visit this practice. I'm not easily impressed and rarely rate any business, but this was well worth my time and effort. I can't think of any other place to take my dog. Before dr Taylor. We went to a few variety vet places. VCA . Dogwood vet. And a few others. We came here from a recommendation of a friend. They def know there stuff. They don't force you to do bloodwork to your dog unless it was necessary. This place will be honest and truthful about the health of your pet. Dr. Dolan has been the best VEt we have gone to for our toy poodle. He understands Joey and his history. Our dog was recently diagnosed with cushions. Dr Dolan recommend the proper meds for Joey and we couldn't be any more please. If you ever need to come to a place to take your pets for care. Please give this place a try. I am so happy that we found Dr. Taylor & his wonderful staff, when we first rescued our 2 wonderful dogs, from RACC. It's been almost 8 yrs that we have been going to both him & Dr. Owens, & we can't say enough wonderful things about the 2 of them. They have an amazing staff to help you keep your pet healthy and happy and are incredibly tender and helpful when it's time to make the final decisions for your pet's life.
