We visited this beautiful and remote sea loch in Knapdale, Argyll, last month, driving down from Crinan. There are several small islands near its mouth and a long peninsula called Taynish Island which juts out southwards into the loch from its western shore.
Castle Sween can be found on the eastern side of Loch Sween and is believed to be one of the earliest stone castles in Scotland; it was built in the late twelfth century by Suibhne, ancestor of the MacSweens.
Tayvallich and Carsaig are the two main villages found on the road along the west bank. Carsaig is very small, with distant views of the Paps (peaks) of Jura; Tayvallich is larger, wrapped around a sheltered bay.
A wonderful area altogether for walking, sailing or cycling and one of the favourite places we found recently! Plenty of wildlife to spot - seals and otters are sometimes seen here, plus cormorants and oystercatchers. Beavers have recently been released into the wild in this area too.
Definitely a place to visit if you're in Knapdale, within easy reach by car from Crinan or Lochgilphead (about 6 miles away). read more
