Most places do accept credit cards and we came mainly to pick up some fresh fruit to balance out all the heavy food we would be eating. The climate in Scotland is cold and rainy this time of year and the oranges and raspberries we got tasted different that the ones we get in the Bay Area. There is also meat and seafood, I loved seeing the fresh caught crab on a bed of seaweed and hard to find meat like venison for sale.

He got raspberry, but they offered different flavors. It was very creamy and good and their waffle cone was excellent. Tasted almost caramelized and nicely crunchy. My favorite was their egg custard. It was very flaky and crunchy with a creamy center. It was very good. I've had some egg custards in Portugal as well, and these tasted authentic.

Despite that we got bread, paella, cheese, raspberries, pears, apples, lettuce, cucumbers, and jam for the rest of our trip in Scotland and it was all fantastic. The paella we ate there. I got the chicken paella because I didn't think picking apart seafood with my hands was the best idea while wrangling two small kids without a reasonable place to sit down. It was really good, if a tiny bit saltier than I'd like. The spices were top notch and the experience of seeing it made in the huge 6' in diameter wok-like pans was worth it. The bread (we got spelt) was _really_ good and I wish we'd gotten two loaves. Instead, we got only one and just relished the breakfast sandwiches we made with it the next few days. The cheese, jam and produce formed the basis of a lot of what we ate for the next few days and it was much better than what we'd been getting at Tesco.

I was immediately attracted to the plate as I saw people walking around with them. For £5, the plate is huge and will easily fill you up. Unfortunately, the flavor and taste was only okay. It may be best to share, so it's not so overwhelming. It's not bad, but definitely not one of the better paellas I have had. My friend did get the dumplings, which are pretty popular as well though. Either way, cool little spot to grab a bite and walk around. It does get pretty crowded though.

Having just moved here, I was excited to find that there is a monthly farmers market close to my new place. The market is almost hidden in the car park behind the Merlin, except for some banners and a couple of stalls by the side of the building. This market seems to keep things simple, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. There was a fruit and veg stall ( a very good one). The Secret Herb Garden was greeting us at the entry with lavender, herbs and beers. Pie Not was selling fresh made pies. We were able to buy some absolutely tasty brownies. And one of the highlights was Flat Out. They make their own flat bread and meatballs. We had the thai green curry chicken meatballs. I could've eaten a whole bowl of those. Isle of Arran cheeses was on the list of venders, but wasn't there. Here's hoping to pick up some cheese next month.

I mean, as far as I can tell, if they've still got bees, they must be doing something right. What's interesting about these guys is that, although most of the year their hives stay in Fife and Perthshire, where they make blossom honey, they're moved to the Grampian Moorlands every July, where they produce heather honey. I mean, c'mon, how much more Scottish could you possibly get. I have a tendency to buy lots of stuff at the Farmer's Market, with the intention of having these products last a really long time. But then picnics happen. I assure you, some fresh bread with smoked mozzarella and honey is a surefire way of having a delicious and affordable picnic (when the weather allows). If you've decided honey might be a bit too messy, then run over to one of the many jam stalls, where you can smother your cheese and bread in fruit. Keep in mind that Scarlett's Scotland is only at the Farmer's Market every 1st Saturday, so you'll have to get some planning done if you want to buy their delicious goods.

Just sitting there, beckoning to me with the option of actually getting breakfast, albeit having to sacrifice punctuality. Stoats is good. Stoats is very good indeed. They will put all sorts of delicious yums in your porridge. I never grew up eating porridge. Mainly because it's not staple food in Brazil, so it wasn't staple food in my house either. And I can't really deal with plain porridge. Which is where Stoats comes in, in all its magnificence. They'll put jam in your porridge, they'll put chocolate in your porridge. You can get your porridge with honey or brown sugar. You can get it with extra cream. You can get it with nuts! You can, obviously, get it with raisins or sultanas (though I have a personal vendetta against these dessicated grapes). Now, they're at the Farmers Market every Saturday, and considering it never really gets too hot for porridge in Scotland, you should get there and try some. Pronto.

The range of ingredients have been listed so I won't bore you with more other than to say I recommend.... If you remember not to fill up too much on porridge I'd also say the other products they sell are well worth a try. The company seems to be expanding so you can buy their stuff all over Edinburgh (and beyond). The muesli is full of wholesome, crunchy, colourful, tasty scrumptiousness and as with the porridge, this muesli dispels any previous misconceptions you will have had about grey, boring, bland muesli. The porridge bars make a great snack; I often have one kicking about for hunger emergencies. I'd go for the cranberry and macadamia since you asked!

But this year I've been pretty regular at getting myself over there to ogle all the fresh fruit and veg, as well as all the fresh fish. The only way I normally let myself eat fish is when it's local, because the idea of eating fish that has been shipped to Scotland from Australia always puts me off, no matter how much time it's spent on ice. A & D Patterson have both fresh and smoked fish. They also sell shellfish. I bought smoked haddock there a couple of weeks ago to replicate an amazing risotto recipe my family tried at Sweet Melindas: risotto with smoked haddock and chives with fresh cod. If you're as iffy as I am about the environmental impact of fishing and yet have as little self-control when it comes to seafood as I do, definitely stop by the Farmer's Market on a bright Saturday and get some fish from A & D Patterson, who're there every Saturday.

I'm a big fan of independent greengrocers. Sadly, there aren't many of them about these days, but that is what makes places like Tattie Shaws so special. With a great range of fruit and veg from all across the world, Tattie's supplies look full of flavour and ripe like they've just been picked off a plant. It's very reasonably priced and they also stock a variety of herbs and other such cooking ingredients. The staff are pretty alert and keen to help if you need anything. But most of all, I was so impressed with the quality of the produce. With the vibrant colours and fresh appearances, Tattie Shaw's stocks both homegrown and international fruit and veg. It's great that they represent local farmers and suppliers, but their more exotic offerings look equally as fresh - they've definitely been shipped in recently. As it's still the Scottish strawberry season, I'd recommend trying Tattie's for some of Fife's best berries!

He seems to have a lot of everything all year round so he must be getting some of it from abroad but I know he also does seasonal stuff too. Ask him what's good and he'll suggest something! It's also handily on my walk home from work (assuming i get out in time before he closes!)

The vendors are normally up for a good chat and we've begun to talk to each other on a first name basis. The Bearded Coffee and Phantassie Fruit and Veg are two personal favourites. There are always a couple of vendors that sell hot food ranging from crepes to paella but if nothing tickles your fancy you always have the likes Wolf + Water, Cafe Tartine and Michelin starred Kitchin as an alternative option for lunch.

But hailing from the city of all things organic (Vancouver), I like to play the part that I am. Somehow, having an open bag of chia seeds in the house, that I occasionally remember to throw into smoothies when I occasionally remember to MAKE smoothies, makes me feel less guilty about eating Corn Flakes for dinner while I'm slogging through emails. This makes me an adult right? That doesn't mean that the act of buying a meal that doesn't look like it was constructed by a five year old, doesn't tickle my fancy - I love nothing more then following up a Corn Flakeian dinner with a good ol' fashioned organic almond yogurt. Life is about the balance. I also have a deep seeded belief in only using biodegradable and clean house hold products. So when i'm not doing the best in my personal well being - at least i'm looking after the planet as a whole. This place ticks off a few major factors in my strange collaborative idea of "healthy living". First off, it stocks an impressive array of house hold items and is one of the first places i've found that carries multiple lines of personal care items - from Burts Bees to good for ya toothpaste - it was a one stop shop for both my washroom & under the sink. Secondly - it stocks pretty much everything you need to justify future unhealthy meals. From organic quinoa to virgin, cold pressed coconut oil, it's simply screaming: look how healthy you are?! Why yes, you can eat ice cream for dinner! But as many a person as said - living healthy (or in my case, buying excuses) can be pricey. What I will note, is as a newly landed expat, this place IS cheaper than the haunts back home and for that i'm thankful, but compared to the digs you can pick up elsewhere - yes, it's going to cost you an extra dollar. My tip if you fear the price tag? This funky little blue and green ball we're living on needs all the help it can get. If you can't stomach the whole nine yards of good food organic, pare it down. Spend the extra £1 for your dish soap, laundry & shampoo and keep the nasty stuff out of the drains. Then stock up on the hard to find items, or the ones you use frequently and leave the bits & bobs for a cheaper place. Nothing is better than proper, virgin, organic, cold pressed olive oil. Nothing. Will definitely be popping in here time to time to stock up on the must haves. If I could track down a spot to buy E3Live in town, i'd have all my cake justifying staples back in place.

Situated just off from the busy Lothian Road, Real Foods is just a short walk from the city centre so it is a convenient place to reach. The quality of the food is always top notch and the fruit and veg are always fresh - there is no out of date food sold here. Real Foods sell lots of health foods such as a huge range of different dried fruits and pulses. There is also a vitamin area in the shop which sells every vitamin and mineral required to cure any ailment , as well as a range of herbal remedies. The staff are incredibly friendly and are knowledgeable about the stores products so you feel quite at ease with them over asking which remedy does what. Real foods also has a section in its shop selling natural beauty products, soaps, shampoos etc. I love the mascara which they sell here as it is nice and cheap at around four pounds and makes my eyelashes look super long. Real Foods is a fantastic shop which sells a vast range of amazing tasting food, and best of all the food is healthy! What more could you want?!!
