Llandough Hospital has an excellent reputation for care, cleanliness and facilities. Considering that this is an NHS Hospital, that's even more impressive (not that it's good, but that it has a good reputation). From the outside this hospital has a whole lot of charm. It's one long and tall brick building that seems to levitate on the top of a hill overlooking Penarth. Lots of gardens and space and flower beds add to the atmosphere of an old fashioned place. It's respectable in its traditional nature. And, now wait for it, because this is kind of cool, they have the world's first ever high definition MRI. Whoohoo! read more

As a Grangetown resident Llandough is my local. It is also the place I got my baby scans, came for check ups and did an antenatal class. The building itself is old Victorian brick, much smaller and better laid out than the sprawling Heath Hospital. The vibe here is also much more chilled, less traffic, less urgency. I visited the midwife led unit as part of the antenatal class in order to weigh up my options. The unit is like a four start hotel - spacious rooms, double beds with duvets, birthing accessories and birthing pools. This is the place I wanted to give birth. Unfortunately with an old pelvic injury I was advised to go to the Heath hospital where they had surgeons on hand. If there were complications I would have had to wait for an ambulance like everyone else. If you drive here by car no need for coins, rather fantastically, unlike most other hospitals parking is free. read more

I went here in the 6th of January 2011 to have my Gaul bladder removed and the service that I received here was second to none. The staff are very friendly and very attentive. At first I admit that I was slightly nervous but the nerves soon disappeared. overall I would recommend the hospital to anyone and if you are nervous don't be you are in very good hands. read more

I had a major spinal operation on the 14th June 2011. The treatment and care I recieved on Ward West Five was brilliant. The staff at all levels are second to none. Sadly the same can't be said about their after care. That is appalling!!!! I had a rib removed, my lung deflated, and scres and bone graft put around some of my vertabrae, the rib was then replaced with a metal plate and the lung re-inflated. You'd think they would be monitering my progress carefully afterwards, NO I had one initial appointment and saw a junior member of staff who checked my wound was ok but nothing else. I should have had x-rays and a consultants appointment 12 weeks after surguery but no matter how much I chase up they ignore, not only my requests for an appointment, but also my GP! I am now lodging an official complaint. read more

My 16 year old daughter has been waiting for 17 months for an operation to correct her curved spine. We were promised by Mr Howse, that her operation would be carried out within 6 months of the initial consultation in March 2010. We are still waiting and being continually fobbed off. In March 2010, we asked Mr Howse, how much it would cot to go private. We were told not to bother, that the after care on the NHS is better and everything would be done within 6 months. It is heartbreaking having to continually tell my daughter that there is no date yet for her op. She is a typical 16 year old, having just sat her exams in constant pain. She is withdrawing into herself and her confidence around people, other than family is dwindling fast. If i had at least £30,000 I could have the op soon, but don't have that kind of money. I very begrudgingly give one star. The staff have always been very warm and welcoming when we have visited for an outpatients appointment. It is the promise of a 6 month wait then continually being fobbed off that I am not happy with. My daughter does not seem to be progressing up the list read more

My husband had the misfortune to be admitted to ward East 2 yesterday with severe chest pains. The stench and squalor was beyond imagination. The toilets were covered in human filth and a ward of 18 men appeared to be being looked after by one nurse. He was promised that a doctor would be to see him in the morning to give him his test results but has now been told that doctors are only 'on call for emergencies' on the weekend. He's not been given medication and his heart is not being monitored but he's told he has to stay there until Monday. I can see no evidence of care or cleanliness. read more

I can see there are a lot of good reviews posted on this site but based on my experience today I'm afraid this is not one of them My son was due to have knee op today at this hospital. He arrived before 7as instructed but was told that he was last on the list so wanst expecting to get to theatre until 3. Why do they do this? Is it purely for the convenience of the staff because I can see no benefit to the patient. Anyway the day dragged on until at 5.15 my son was told that they had run out of theatre time and they didnt know when they could reschedule his op! 10 hours in hospital without an offer of a snack or a drink, Is this how the NHS treats their patents? If we deprived an animal of food and water that long we would be arrested for cruelty. There has got to be a more patent friendly way of organising these operations and unless everyone who is inconvenienced makes a formal complaint the system will never change so if you're reading this thinking thats happened to me. My dad went into Llandough 3 weeks ago having had a series of mini strokes, the ward staff from top to bottom have been absolutely fantastic and made an enormous difference to my dads recovery. BUT, there is a massive rebuild going on at the hospital and my dad was placed on a side ward with boarded off windows so had no natural light, he didn't know day from night and it made him very confused. My entire family begged complained and harassed the staff for 2 weeks to get him moved to a room with a window as he was going down hill rapidly. The staff all feel the same way about the windows having been boarded up and asked us to keep complaining, not just for my dad but for all the patients being kept in these conditions. It felt like he was put in a box and left to die! Thankfully we were heard and he was moved to a room with a window a few days ago and the difference to his recovery has been rapid, they're even talking about letting him come home next week. My other concern is the level of cleanliness I've seen. My dad's pillowcase still has food stains on it that we first noticed 2 weeks ago and he says that he's never had clean sheets put on his bed since he got there. He dropped a dirty spoon on the floor behind his chair and obviously couldn't retrieve it. The spoon stayed there for 3 days. The housekeeping is frightening! If my dad had been in there for an operation I dread to think what infections he'd have been exposed to. Full marks to the nursing staff who are having to work in such unacceptable conditions and doing such a fantastic job, no marks at all for the conditions they're being forced to work in and the awful effect it has on the patients. read more

If anybody is expecting to visit here at the moment and find a parking space, then think again. Due to all the work going on here the parking spaces are few and far between. Frustrated drivers are parking all over the place.... up on pavements, in car park aisles etc. It has been like this for some time and there is no sign of things getting better. We always go in twos, one to drive around....and around...and around, whilst the other visits the hospital. I had to go to outpatients about a year ago. By the time my husband had found a parking spot, I had waited for 20 minutes, seen the consultant and had all my tests done. Today my husband took my son to physiotherapy. We knew there were a load of disabled parking spaces around the back of the hospital. None were free today, so my husband dropped my son off. He is on crutches and can't walk far, and the back of the hospital is closer to the physiotherapy department. 20 minutes later my husband found a place and walked to the back of the hospital. The entrance which used to be there a few weeks ago was now blocked up, and no sign in the car park to say so, so my poor son had had to walk on crutches all the way around the front of the hospital to access the department as he couldn't contact my husband to tell him the way was no longer accessable. This hospital's parking is a complete shambles. Something needs to be done........NOW read more
