This is a large Albert Heijin location, located at Coolsingel 47 it is opposite Stadhuis Metro…read moreStation and was 200 meters away from the Hilton Rotterdam, making it the ideal location for me to grab essentials while shopping in the city. For tourists, Albert Heijin is the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, it's pretty much a brand you can't hide from and it seems they have stores everywhere you look with almost 1000 stores in the Netherlands. The store has a one-way system to enter/exit the store, you must scan a receipt to get out, this seems to be common with many AH stores, so can be difficult if you decide not to buy anything, or the item you want to purchase is out of stock. This particular location is modern and well laid out, they do seem to be focused on the self-service checkouts, with a large number of them. The self-service checkouts did seem unattended, after I had an issue, I was unable to find a staff member to assist me, and did have to leave my shopping on one of my recent trips to the store. I also liked how the statiegeld machine (return your plastic bottles to get your deposit back) was towards the front of the store, rather than tucked away in a back corner like other AH locations. They also have the bottled drinks towards the front of the store, by the checkouts, which also makes things easier. They had a good selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, and a small bakery section, brought in by the stores' recent expansion. Prices did seem slightly high, but not as high as other AH locations. With such market dominance, I guess they get away with it... Modern, clean location with reasonable selection, but the service is a letdown. 3*

Wah Nam Hong at the Markthal Rotterdam…read more This is a big Asian supermarket with a cafe inside upstairs and it's great value for money! They serve Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian & Thai food. Don't expect anything more than a cafeteria due to location. The menu obviously isn't crazy big with that representation and what they do is done pretty well in my humble option. It was packed on a Friday night when we went so must be a hit with the locals. The only table left was right next to the kitchen which got pretty hot. We could however look out into the Markthal. We got there about 8pm and it closed at 9pm but the waitress was upfront about that and that we were the last people able to order. That's just what we wanted as wanted to get out in the town. We had Asahi beer with a very generous portion of Edamame beans with nice flakes of sea salt. Yakitori chicken - this was thighs not crispy skins but tasty. Siu mai dumplings which are always a hit with me. Bapao rund and Char Siu bao. These were a bit doughy for my tastes but tasty and good value. Everything tasted good and the service was good too. We shared Crispy pork belly with boy choi for €7.50 too. I'd go back :)

Living in the netherlands made me miss asian snacks so much! Back home in SF we had tons and tons…read moreand tons of asian supermarkets (well just think of our asian population) but in the netherlands particularly veenendaal there was a few asian tokos and the options were so limited. I went to Rotterdam to go see this light show and happened to walk by this supermarket and it was pretty big so I knew they'd have good selection. My oh my did it! I found all my favorites and bought a few of everything. They also had fruittips in black currant which they no longer sell it San Francisco and people would have their friends bring it back from trips to HK. Well they sold it here and I empty a box of the last few tubes in my basket! Can't believe I found a place that has fruittips!!!

This Albert Heijn store is styled AH To Go, down to the fact it is located inside Beurs Metro…read moreStation. WARNING: They don't accept Mastercard, Visa, or even cash here, it's Maestro only, this meant I had to put my shopping away and go elsewhere after getting to the checkout, as they don't have any signs to warn you either. This means if you're visiting from outside of the Netherlands, and are unlikely to have a Maestro card, you're unable to buy anything from this store. It may not be the most modern/exciting of AH stores, but it is in a useful location in Rotterdam, especially if you're getting the Metro. The prices here are higher than other Albert Heijn stores because of this, so if you have more time, you may want to visit one of their other locations which are a couple of minutes on foot, away from this one. For tourists, Albert Heijin is the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, it's pretty much a brand you can't hide from and it seems they have stores everywhere you look with almost 1000 stores in the Netherlands. The store was reasonably small but had a decent section of essentials including drinks in the fridge. 2* - I hate how this place doesn't accept anything other than Maestro Cards and you don't find out until your payment fails at the checkpoint with no warning signs around the store... you'd expect more in 2022, especially from a supermarket in a key metro station in Rotterdam, where many international tourists are likely to visit.
