It even included the true story of a woman who became a CIA agent. So far the book is terrific. The author is applying for the position and is amazed not by the rigorous interviews and not by the lengthy polygraph but by the extraordinary amount of her pee the department seems to want. So take the kiddos, go for a walk and discover something wonderful to read. And be thankful that no one wants your pee.

I had a chance to talk to the owner and she explained that for many years there were as many as 30 kids under 10 that lived on this cul-de-sac. The owners built the LFL as a service to them and loved the fact that they'd occasionally hear little voices out in the front yard making discoveries and deciding which books they'd like to take home. The kids are older now and many of them have moved on. So the library doesn't get as much use as it once did. But the owner explained that her adult daughter has autism and has taken the library's curation tasks on as her own. The fact that the responsibility for the LFL has been passed down to another generation is just beautiful and it's made even sweeter for me because we have friends who live just a few doors down with little readers who are the perfect age to enjoy it. What a score! This…read moreLittle Free Library was PACKED. Getting books out of this box required an engineer's eye and a contortionist's flexibility. We got a chance to speak to the woman who owns the home and she explained that someone had come by recently and made a significant donation. The box is on a family's front yard, located closer than I expected to their home. It's just 3 or 4 doors from Lyons Ave so it's a very convenient stop in case you're looking to quickly grab something to read on your way to wherever you're goin'.

It's owned by folks with a wild, colorful sense of style and a passion for reading. There were bangles and bobbles and doodads hanging everywhere. And there was nearly three times as many books here as would fit in the box. Fantastic. So go for a drive, see a neighborhood in the center of Santa Clarita that still somehow maintains it's rural heart and enjoy the enthusiastic passion of this Little Free Library.

And packed with lots of good reading material for kiddos about the age of the ones that would attend school here. It's also perfectly positioned to be a benefit to the community at large. The second was perfectly placed for the little reader headed into the main school entrance. It was right next to the gate by the front office. The selection here was a little lacking but my hope is that's because it's got so many kids finding their next amazing story right as they walk into school. The library is dedicated to a young man that apparently was pretty amazing. Evan Mario Macrone was an excellent student, loved music and was a voracious reader. It sounds like he was a pretty remarkable kid. I'm sorry for their pain but for thankful for the contribution made to the community in Evan's honor. I think it's a wonderful way to remember a great kid.

I swung by after picking up my daughter from a sleepover and gave she and a friend a few minutes to peruse the selection. The best part was that we had recently cleaned the garage and I had a half a dozen books to give away in the car with me. So now a full LFL became a positively stuffed, almost can't close the door LFL. I think that's exactly the condition they're supposed to be in.

This one's right in front of Valencia Valley Elementary. Designed like an adorable, little, red schoolhouse it's even got a tiny, little bell. Tons of windows invite eager readers to check out what's new inside and the proximity to my house means that once we finally sort through that giant box of books we've read, that I know immediately where my first stop will be to donate some. Another way to make this beautiful neighborhood even more appealing.

But I have a special place in my heart for those independent spirited mavericks who don't need someone else's program or website or authorization. They build a box themselves and pack it full of books and call it good. It seems like those folks aren't especially concerned about promotion or getting the word out. They understand that the people near them that love books will find them and hope that those not near them will build their own free library. I hope the owners of this delightful Little Library will allow me to do a bit of promotion on their behalf. It's awesome. Well constructed and beautifully similar to the full sized home, this library was packed to the ceiling with reading material for kids and adults. It's located on a charming, very quiet cul-de-sac and is just a quick walk from the nearest park. And it's just blocks from my home. Which means it will be a regular stop when I've got books to donate or I'm looking for the next interesting book to read.
