They have held several open houses where neighbors can drop in and meet each other and learn about the free library. The concept is simple, anyone can borrow or leave a book. It's not required that you donate a book, but many do. It's fun to see what books are available, or to leave a book that you have finished reading. The selection is small, but it changes often. It's not a substitute for an actual library, but it's a fun way to build community. And the library itself is gosh darn cute!

The function is similar but the degree of decoration varies from site to site. This site is on Chislett at the intersection with Wellesley. It is one of two I've come across in this neighborhood. The other is more thematic.and brightly colored. Both would be quite inviting to avid readers and children. Quite commendable to make this effort!

Inside, two shelves that were well stuffed. Quite a lot of childrens books but a few thrillers and some reference books. "The Terrible Underpants" is a good read for the little ones. This is charter number 173085 and while the steward does not have their name or email or a caption, the name of this library is "Dax & Kasidy's Little Library." But now it is back to life and serving the community. Look for the newspaper box. It is painted in bright colors (like everything else here) and could be a little hard to find with all the other artwork. Inside the library, there are three shelves of books with a variety of topics. Some hardcovers and paperbacks today. This is charter number 86279. This particular library is dedicated to the memory of Jim Coyner, a deceased Captain of the Pittsburgh firefighters. The "16" depicted is the number of Jim' firehouse which later moved and was renumbered in Squirrel Hill. The book drop is maintained by Jim's wife who is very giving of her time and energy in both maintaining this community asset but telling the story of her late husband. Worth a stop on a nice day in Morningside.
