On a light industrial estate outside Leyburn, plenty of parking. Walk through the shop into the factory. Big picture windows let you spy on a woman bashing a tea towel with rolling pin.
Three giant chocolate fountains (tempering machines) are mildly hypnotic.
That's pretty much the extent of the factory, basically they melt chocolate and pour it into moulds. The star attraction is yet to come, however...
Then you can sit on a school form bench to watch "the story of chocolate" DVD on a burnt-in projector. Don't miss it, ask the lady in the shop to start it up, you're in for a treat!
To the accompaniment of Mantovani style sweeping strings a soporific woman reminiscent of the Caramel rabbit, or perhaps Nigella Lawson, narrates, really enjoying saying "cocoa butter".
Then you see real people showing the moulding process, with occasional lascivious interjections from Nigella: "making the fillings", "take a look in the gift shop where you can buy all the chocolate you desire". Kitsch taken to the nth degree.
Plenty of laminated thank-you notes from local schoolkids on the wall, obviously a popular attraction, I bet it's not for the DVD though.
