I've come to Ilkley and I've not even had any booze yet. What on earth is wrong with me? I know…read morethat makes me sound like I have issues (and quite frankly I do but I won't go into them), but I just like some liquid refreshment. Quick then get me into the Ilkley Moor Vaults. This is a cracking pub. It's nicely done out and has a very warm friendly atmosphere. It's laid back and chilled all the way. Now onto the important bit and the drinks. Well I love it. Simple as that. The wine list has some excellent tipples on and it isn't ridiculously expensive either. The ale is finely kept and there is a nice selection as well. My only problem is deciding my beverage of choice. As for the food, it's real served pub grub of the highest order. This place deserves a good old pat on the back. They are also super relaxed about dogs and walkers too, which is good to know if you want a walking stop off point to refuel.

Just down the A65 in Ilkley, this food-focused walkers' haunt is one of the best. With low lighting, dark wood and cosy seating to compliment the all-important open fire, this is prime date territory, and the restaurant-quality food and extensive wine list (plus a good soft drink selection for the driver) will ensure an evening to remember. On my visit I enjoyed a spinach, squash and goat's cheese lasagne - a deliciously fresh-tasting use of seasonal, local produce - and a melt-in-the-mouth cheeseboard accompanied by a tart quince jelly. I can heartily recommend both. Although food is clearly the main event here, a decent selection of house and guest ales means its also worth just popping in for a drink, and with the pub's position just five minutes from the centre of Ilkley, a quaint, up-market spa town, and at the start of the Dales Way, there are plenty of opportunities to walk off any excesses.

When I first moved up into West Yorkshire territory I hadn't really heard anything about Ilkley, and when my flatmates decided we would go for a visit, all the people local to the area shouted out in unison On Ilkley Moor Bar T'at. Excuse you? Apparently it derives from the little ditty about being on Ilkley Moor and your hat blowing away and thus being left on the moor Bar T'at. Funny Yorkshire folk. Anyhoo, Ilkley is not without it's fair share of nice places for a glass of wine or a swift pint and some food to enjoy, and Bar T'at comes under that umbrella. The feeling from the bar is definitely intimate, with dark wood and wooden bench/booths, low lighting and narrow walkways, but it's not too intrusive. Descend the spiral staircase and there's another space to enjoy, primarily used for people indulging in Bar T'at pub lunches, but for me I prefer the patio area outside, especially in days of a more appealing temperature. The menu is nice and concise, not too much on it, but plenty enough to choose from, and the prices, well they're a bit on the expensive side of pub food, but it is really nice food, nice portions, and feeling of being full stays with you longer than you'd think. On cold days, I would say check out the homemade Shepherd's Pie, complete with vegetables, tasty and part of your five a day. Main courses £7, sandwiches between £5 and £6, sides £2, and starters about the same. Really nice! Thumbs up!

Now, usually, I'm a cappuccino kind of girl. But every so often I like to have something just a bit stronger! I'm not suggesting anything too heavy, like, but you know what I mean. One happy Saturday I was feeling this way inclined and so I nipped into Bar T'at. Yey! What a lovely atmosphere. Having nipped into many a countryside pub solo before I feared the odd looks which are often donated to myself, a single young female, as if to suggest that I must be strange for coming in alone to drink. None of those looks, so first impressions were good. I had a very delectable gin and tonic, served with lime, and had a good chill on one of their comfy seats. The best bit? They're situated in the huge car park courtyard right near some of the best shops. Perfect!

Despite the challenges of planning something with hosts who were in the U.S., the Waterside made this dinner a night everyone will remember. It was the first time bringing together different strands of a family that literally came from around the world. Ian kept everything running perfectly. We met up earlier in the day to iron out a few details and then those of us hosting didn't have to worry about a thing. Paul Huddlestone is a world class chef who works with fresh, organic, Yorkshire ingredients to make a menu that is both local and international in flavors. We are a family who really enjoy good food -- with many avid cooks, including professional chefs -- and everyone loved the food. The wine selections were perfect. And the prices were reasonable too, which was also a factor selecting the Waterside as a place for the dinner. They worked with us to please the tastes of everyone. Despite having a larger group, the selections were customized. The staff were all so warm and friendly. Chef Paul even surprised us with a lovely amuse bouche for our sparkling wine toast at the start of the meal. By dessert there were many more toasts thanks to a dinner that made us now one family. I have attached some photos just to show how happy we all were -- and the good food and relaxed atmosphere made that possible. If you want to have a dinner with some world class food that is firmly rooted in local cuisine, you should dine here. In addition, if you are planning a larger special occasion dinner: I cannot recommend the Waterside highly enough.

Having during the course of the afternoon made friends with a German, a Mexican and a French lady at Whitacker's (there's a joke in there somewhere) we decided North Bar Social would be a great place to show our new compadres some of the best drinking Yorkshire can offer. We were a highly enthusiastic, multi-lingual and already rather toasted crew of newly found drinking buddies and the homely atmosphere in North Bar Social suited us to a tee. Our Bavarian even managed to find a beer from his home town and enthusiastically made us drink it...it tasted of smoked ham. Like drinking smoked ham. It was awful. But at least it made him laugh to watch us. I suspect he had planned this all along. The lighting upstairs was a little bright and the wooden seats could have done with some cushions but these are mere environmental trifles that any new bar can sort out as feedback pours in. North Bar Social was a great way to while away a Saturday night with their vast and dazzling array of drinks, absolutely superb bar man whose service and smile were impeccable and perfect ambience entirely suited to making new friends.
