Last night after moving and working on a new place in battle Mountain, my family and I decided to…read morego to the owl club for dinner. Being able to seat yourself is nice, because then you don't have to wait on someone to seat you, and our drink order was immediately taken. After yapping for a while, we ordered two Open Faced Turkey Sandwiches w/ Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, a French Dip w/ Onion rings and a Half Rack of Ribs with Loaded Mashed Potatoes. Our food arrived relatively quickly actually, but unfortunately, it wasn't very warm. The mashed potatoes on both turkey dinners were cold, and had to be sent back to be warmed up (which I'm pretty sure they just did it in the microwave.) My mashed potatoes with my ribs were also cold, but I ate them anyways because I didn't want to have to send every plate back. I felt bad for them. The beef on the French dip looked dry and kind of old, but the onion rings were amazing. The ribs were amazing, falling off the bone tender and super flavorful. It really is unfortunate that everybody's mashed potatoes were cold. Once they were kind of heated up, everything was pretty good though. The waitresses were all super nice even after we had to send food back, so I'm glad they at least had good attitudes and weren't mean to us afterwards. One unique thing I think is really cool about this place is they have a salad bar that is included in some of the dinners! Although it was not included in my rib dinner, so I didn't go and look at it. The restaurant itself was quiet with just the faint sound of casino machines in the background, and a few rowdy guys who showed up in big trucks and were yelling at each other through the windows. All in all, it wasn't too bad and I would probably try it again, but they really do need to heat up those mashed potatoes better.

I was on a road trip in early March with my dog, and was looking for hiking opportunities. I…read moredecided to give Water Canyon a try. It was a good time. First, the challenges I faced -- (1) At that time of year, snow was melting at lower elevations, and things were very muddy. I just was driving a little sedan with limited clearance, and I realized I would not be able to drive to the end of the trailhead. I parked at one of the campsites and hiked. Even still, my car got really muddy (later the interior got muddy when I got back in!). The lessons are to drive a car with some clearance and 4-wheel-drive if possible, and bring a towel or something to clean off! (2) There was a surprising amount of snow still in March once you get on the trail. I probably should have waited just a bit longer. We were still able to hike for a while, but I wasn't prepared for the snow. Having said that, it was a nice hike. We got some great sunshine, and as the sun started to go down, you get great shadows. It feels like there could be quite a bit of wildlife around you. I saw several campers at the campsites on the way to the trailhead. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. Several other dogs nearby. The place is pretty close to town, also. I stayed at a hotel in Winnemucca that night, and this was a convenient hike for a traveler.

One of the best campsites I've stayed at, and it was F R E E ! ! Right outside town, but felt very remote and peaceful (although I can see where it would get rowdy on weekends...there was lots of graffiti on the table about kids having sex there and whatnot). Site was huge, flat and equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table...surrounded by a stately grove of trees, with a view of the creek. No mosquitoes, but plenty of birds and a skunk (who left us alone, thankfully). Not sure if wood gathering is permitted, but there was plenty around. There were also vault toilets nearby. I would DEFINITELY stay here again! Can't recommend this enough!
