He runs the gallery with great skill, bringing in a constant flow of innovative artists. The art in the main gallery here is often the kind of art that wouldn't be appropriate to hang over your fireplace, it's art that makes a statement, and is art for art's sake. Many of the pieces are for sale, some seem to be for display only. There is usually a collection of smaller pieces of art at very reasonable prices, and I'm proud to say that I have a bunch of artistic bumper stickers that I've gotten from Flight! This gallery is the home of the Turn it Off! sticker series. I've always been a huge fan of this gallery's stickers. There's easy parking in Blue Star, and you can chain up your bikes on the patio.

Most of the stuff in here in imported from Mexico, or made by artists here in Texas. Everything in here is for sale, and the prices are negotiable if you buy in volume. The whole place is filled with art, floor to ceiling, and you can spend a good long time in here looking around everything there is to see. It's a great place to check out on First Friday.

Directly across the street was the beautiful, well manicured Chris Park. Carefully placed concrete art benches with meaningful engraved messages were scattered throughout the park. There's also a sweet covered picnic area to relax or have a small party. Peaceful and a nice retreat. A small art building resides in the park containing a gallery of a particular artist. We thoroughly enjoyed the colorful exhibit. Forgot to mention there's an outdoor sculpture garden next to Ruby City. Super cool! Must check out. Highly recommend this place for art lovers ! The staff was very friendly and directed us and provided us with guide material. This museum is quite small- you can easily get through the indoor portion within an hour. There is a large variety of modern art, and there was even a Picasso piece. I like the mix of artists which includes local art as well. There's a few sculptures outside to view as well, and it's a very peaceful green area. We had no trouble with free street parking, but I can see how this would pose a problem if you visit on a busy day. Amazing thing to check out in the city for free though!

I think contemporary art is easily disregarded by many but there are works shown here that should change one's mind who is open to viewing it. While you can donate to the gallery, I would recommend a shop or some more expansive merchandise for sale. I would love a sticker! I think people are more likely to buy a souvenir than donate. They are always changing their "exhibits" and products- exhibits that can luckily be bought! They have a plethora of unique items, from large scale art pieces to animal sculptures; lighting options that are as beautiful as they are bright to utensils almost too lovely to eat and drink with; miniature handmade Christmas ornaments; from elaborate earrings to pretty prints, there is something for everyone! A hidden gem loved by locals, a favorite detour before a show at any of the four performing art venues within walking distance- one literally steps away, so close that anybody who has been to a show has inevitably passed by while waiting in line to get through security! Their success in such a prime location is evidenced by their 25th anniversary this year, having been established way back in 1999, with a 10 year anniversary at their present location downtown. The service here is phenomenal. I challenge you to find fault here. Even though I have only ever bought something once, I confess that I have been here without purchasing anything at least a dozen times. The owner, Philip, and any other employees, has never reacted or treated me any differently. Friendly, welcoming, all smiles. I am totally in love with the art scene in San Antonio at the present! There is a Do it Yourself…read morevibe and a polished art community coexisting simultaneously in the city. With galleries like The High Wire Arts, that feeling is definitely consummated. It is a commune of artists, if you will, who create both compelling and intellectually stimulating works. The gallery is located right across the street from The Josephine Theater. There is some parking in front of the spot, but you might have to park further down and walk here. The outside facade is quite amazing. There are sculptures that surround it; a sight to behold when they are lit up at night. Since I went there for a fundraising function they did charge a nominal entrance fee, $3.00 or by donation. But with admission they did offer catering by an Indian eatery. Inside the place was filled with all types of people to include, hipsters, burnout hippies, squatters, suit and tie types, musicians, writers, etc. White sleek walls were filled with ultra affordable art. I spotted a lady painting a complex piece, while a dog was resting a few feet away from her. The space itself is a mix of light and darkness. For example the front part has a use of brightness, in conjunction with white walls that lends to the pieces being displayed. Along the corridors there are dark corridors hidden by shadows that have rooms where new works are being made. Other rooms in the gallery have specific areas where patrons congregate and converse. In one of the rooms a DJ, an acoustic player and a Hare Krishna avatar were utilizing the same art space. I liked the vibe of this room, with swirling lights straight out of a Andy Warhol studio. It created an esoteric, unearthly vibe. My only critique of this gallery is the overplaying of light and darlk to the hilt. In some of the corridors it would have been nice to see a tad more light beeming. But than again each room and space had its own vision and narrative. Some of the art is mindblowing. To see the use of everyday things like leaves and teabags reimagined into canvases for dialogue was certainly not lost on me. The High Wire Arts Gallery is the perfect spot to play to the assets of this city, which has always been art and music. It is a bit hipster but not pretentious. It has a glow of its own that gives it purpsoe and a sense of urgency. I want to go back and see the teabags with the tiniest of etchings. Maybe it is saying that we need to examine things more closely before we make an absolute judgement. Maybe it is just a teabag with intricate etchings.

Viva Sala Diaz! This art gallery used to be the home of a…read moreprominent San Antonio artist, Chuck Ramirez, who passed away too soon. His home now serves as an experimental gallery for various local and international artists. The backyard is a great place to hang out at the picnic tables and have a beer or two. The place has a great backyard that's been the host of so many parties. You can always bring your own drinks, but sometimes they are kind enough to supply the beers! The gallery space is always impeccably clean, well lit, and the works are displayed well. There's always a cool theme throughout the house, as one artist usually displays their work at a time, giving the viewer a complete experience throughout the gallery. Check out their schedule, and get in on one of the openings, and you'll have a great time!

I wandered into this little house that has been overhauled to be a collaborative art space just before they closed. The ladies were nice enough to walk me around and show me different art projects, plates, figures, masks, paintings, legit sugar skulls, and so forth. My head was reeling from all of the wonderful art they were putting out. There are a number of shelving units all around the openspace room and each contains works from a different artist up for sale. What is better than getting a great piece of art AND talking to the artist. They do custom work and said that it may take some time given what is wanted but that everything is handmade. You can tell that a lot of love and sweat went into every piece. This is a wonderful wonderful place that I suggest everyone go to. They are open all year long and don't just do Dia de los Muertos pieces (which is why I originally stopped by). I would suggest bringing cash because I am not sure that all of the artists take credit cards (if any at all). The goods that I saw ranged from $3-$100 so there is something for every price point.
