I did not attend the LMU, but was caught by the historical marker out front and had to stop. It's certainly an impressive campus and the mission of the university sounds amazing. The marker has the same text on both sides. It starts with a quote and reads, "'If you come through this misery alive... I want you to do something for all those mountain people who have been shut out of the world all these years.' These words of President Abraham Lincoln to General O. O. Howard in 1863 proved to be the catalyst for the founding of LMU. Chartered on February 12, 1897, as a liberal arts university and the home of the Abraham Lincoln Museum. LMU continues its mission of providing an advanced education to people of this region." Next time I am through here, I will try to time it so that I can visit the museum. We saw the campus as we drove past on the highway. It's a gorgeous setting for a school. We decided to stop and see if we could visit the library and museum. We only had a short time which was certainly not enough to see all the history here. They have one of the world's largest private collections of Lincoln and Civil War material anywhere in the world. We will make plans to return as soon as possible. read more

This university was founded to help give the poor people in the area, a college education at low cost. That is not the case with this university. High cost to attend, not commuter friendly at all, no real assistance to students with low knowledge of computers, and the professors are not student friendly. Job placement for students isn't as good as they say. read more

There are universities and then there is LMU. A facility with the brightest and most helpful faculty, staff, and students. Not to mention a beautiful campus to top it off! I would recommend Lincoln Memorial University to anybody! read more

History

Established in 1897.

Our nation's beloved 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was a native of neighboring Kentucky. But you might not know that he envisioned "a great university for the people of this area" here in the Cumberland Gap. One hundred forty years later, Lincoln Memorial University is the heir of that vision, and we are very proud to wear his name and embrace his legacy.

This place is in the middle of nowhere and for no reason either. Why would you subjugate yourself to this place.

Union College is very small with approximately 825 undergraduate students. Last check these students represent 27 states and 9 countries. I'm familiar with this campus because one of my two best friends when I was in college was from Barbourville. I didn't go home with her very often but when I did we spent a lot of time on the Union College Campus. Where the boys are! The friends we made there came frequently to visit our college campus. We weren't a small town Methodist College so there was a lot of drinking establishments near our campus. They didn't have that atmosphere any where near Barbourville at the time. I really can't say I would recommend the school. It's in an absolutely beautiful location in Eastern Kentucky. If you appreciate your time in nature you would find plenty of enjoyment here. I truly have fond memories of my time spent here. If you want to visit a historic campus this is a recommendation.

Heritage Baptist Academy is now called Heritage Christian Academy. It is a excellent school,…read morecouldn't be better. It's a nice, warm, and friendly environment for kids to go to school. Heritage is also not as expensive as other private christian schools in the area. They offer pre-school through 9th grade. The teachers are fantastic and really can help work one on one with the students, as the classes are much smaller than public schools. Oh, and who could forget the fabulous office crew, the principal.. Mrs. Leonard who keeps everything in the order with the help of her assistant principal..Mrs. Ginger. They really do a great job, along with Mr. Michael who also helps keep things going. The kids actually look forward to going to school and are being brought up in a nice Christian environment, away from the struggles some public school students must face. Heritage takes field trips, has festivals, and has lots of fun fundraisers the kids really enjoy, and the parents seem to develop a special friendship with the staff, as the kids get so much hands on attention at school. I would definately recommend it to anyone with children, it's a great place.!!
