But, let's talk about my experience taking the 2 hour minhwa in-gallery class. This was the most satisfying art class I've taken (out of many). If the purpose of making art is to lose oneself and decouple from expectations and outside concerns, this was the ultimate. I had the good fortune to be the only person who signed up that day, lucky because I was the sole recipient of Kate's attention. She's patient, friendly and uniquely pragmatic in her approach. I am sure that the other instructor is equally talented and enjoyable but I do feel that Kate has a unique presence that added much value to the experience. Korean folk art is true folk art and somewhat prescriptive. Kate's instruction was clear and afforded good insight into both the practice and the significance of the genre. All materials were included and in the end, Kate framed the work, ready to hang, and wrapped it for my bike trip home. I'm going to the student exhibition and to future sessions. That's the best and most sincere testimonial I can offer for this unique course.

I would love to say that I "know art", that I'm the kind of person who goes sees a piece, and can…read morego on and on about the artist' vision and how the work "talks" to me....But, I am not that person. Not by a long shot. But I did enjoy my experience at RMG and the artwork on display. RMG shares space with another gallery so of course my girlfriends and I end up at the wrong exhibit. We eventually figured things out and found the location for RMG. It's a decent sized gallery (but what do I know, I'm new to art galleries), with side rooms and cute nooks. And there was free wine. Good or bad (unless its really, really bad), I always enjoy free alcohol. The crowd was diverse; from hipsters, to "artistic" types, to the regular Joes like me. The gallery was showcasing work by Marcos Bontempo on the day I went. It was all things I assumed a showcase would be. The images were disturbing and made me uncomfortable. I could not wait to leave but yet, the paintings kept drawing me in. I even considered buying, until I saw the price tag. Maybe during my next visit (hopefully soon), there will be something that I like that is also within my budget.

Their collaboration with artist is just a wonderful thing to behold. I'm a super fan and collector of Richard Prince's work and his artist catalogs. Karma has been the source of almost my entire collection of his catalogs in addition to a bunch of limited edition, rare zines by Prince. They've also created amazing editions with Julian Schnabel and Jonas Woods, artists that I also appreciate and collect. This is a wonderful and art-souled place to spend some time, and in my case, lots of money over the years (well spent btw).

It was just a bunch of pathetic cinquains and couplets that any horny high school boy could have written. We tried to get away and then he started telling us about birds and Occupy Wall Street. What a creep. He started blabbing he's the King of the East Hampton Starbucks. At that point I said maybe you should then go back to your people. He asked for a ride. OMG!

I would say 500 dollars is not a small amount for anyone. Classes were never delivered. The artists/instructors were never paid. Instead, the gallery kept all the money. I had tried multiple times over the course of a year, sent multiple emails only to receive bullshit emails leading me on. Claiming to offer refunds but just wasting my time and taking my money. They call themselves a supporter of the arts. But they don't support artists. They don't support people who want to support artists. In the middle of a fucking pandemic. Shame on you.

Two things artists really can thrive with are having space and community and that's what Trestle Art Space is all about. The spaces are clean, well maintained and beautiful, and the community is friendly, supportive and encouraging. If you every have the chance to work with Trestle, be it with your own studio space or attending a class there I could not recommend it highly enough.

The art on display at this time is Lamar Peterson. The art was warm, inviting, poignant, and relatable. I liked how there were several pieces, so there was a lot to see. Sometimes when you visit a gallery, you have like five or six pieces and that's it. The layout was cohesive and thoughtful. Researching the artists they represent and the exhibitions they've had in the past, I would go back again. Art appears to be innovative, colorful, warm, and again--relatable. Not pretentious. This gallery is in Chelsea and near several other galleries, so easy to do a gallery crawl. Glad I stumbled upon this spot.

Love her message, love her vibe, and love her voice. I love people who are unapologetically themselves. I look up to that. I really have to just walk around downtown more. I forget how many hidden gems there are. When I remembered the gallery was in SoHo, I stopped in my tracks, searched the address for the gallery and realized I was a block away. I almost ran when I found out and was blown away upon my arrival. All this rambling is to say, don't walk, run here. Ashley's staff is friendly, knowledgeable and so fun to talk to. All of her pieces are incredible and if I didn't have to still buy diapers for the kid, I would be investing in one of her pieces. Until then, I got her book "You don't look fat, you look crazy". There are ways you can support her by buying her card games, books or smaller pieces. I can't wait to dive into this book though. She also has one that focuses on prominent women in history and pop culture called Roar!. Yay, women! It's such a great gift for the strong women in your life. I previously bought this for my sister as a Christmas gift and she loves it. Also, I signed up for the email list, even though I was already on it. Ashley has a thing called a Saturday series.
