Small footprint on a corner of two streets I can't pronounce, they're working some magic inside! They had something like 2 dozen pizza options that all came in medium, large and XL. Sizes are similar to those in the USA though the pricing went up rapidly. The XL was roughly 3 x the price, but didn't look to feed three times as many people. As such we ordered an array of medium pies for us three adults and five kids. With some big eaters we got through 4 of the 5 pizzas (though seriously 3 would normally be plenty as two kids at a combined 13 slices!). We had a couple pepperoni, which also came with Tuna - we're told that's pretty standard for pizza - like, you need to ask to not have on standard. It wasn't bad and didn't take anything away from the pizza as it was! We also grabbed a Mexicana, a Reindeer/Chanterelle/Red Onion pizza and a Quattro which included tuna, ham, shrimp and mushrooms. All were excellent, the crust was thin with a bit of chew left in it and the cheese was delightful! The Reindeer pizza was a favorite - it was smokey with a nice earthy bite from the mushrooms and a little zing from the onion. It was very tasty! We carried out and it only took about 15 minutes for all 5 to be ready. They ran about $11 per pizza and while a bit more than a $5 carry out deal stateside, these pies were seriously good! Well worth checking out anytime you need a pie!

I arrived at Skiffer after doing some research here on Yelp. I saw that it had a number of English reviews, which helped me understand it better, but it was also right next to my hotel (Klaus K) and so I decided to simply show up. It was just me, so I was hoping they had some kind of bar area where I could sit down and continue reading my intoxicating novel while sipping on a glass of wine and waiting for the food. And they did - yay! I'd read about the Fisherman's Friend pizza and although I'm typically not the person that would opt for fish, I did go ahead and ordered it nevertheless. Truth be told, the different kinds of fish on one single pizza did worry me a little, but in the end I was amazed on how well they complemented each other; the poached egg and the shaved fennel were simply the icing of the cake! The reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is because of the service. I know, I know, I hear it all the time: Finnish service isn't great, so don't expect anything else. But I don't know...I just don't think the two waiters were attentive. I understand they had a lot of hungry customers to feed, but being a single customer, I would have enjoyed a little extra attention. (This is at least what I've been taught, when I learned how to be a good waiter back in the days...) In other words, I just didn't feel like they cared about me as a customer. Nevertheless, the delicious pizza was a hit and in a way tamed me ;-)

This is not just sad because it is a sign that winter is close at hand but also because there is no place to get Liuska (their pizza) for several months. But the good news is that a new Skiffer opened in the center of Helsinki at Erottaja. Here you can now get all the amazing Liuskas you know from Luiskasaari and some more all winter through. And the team did their best to also give you some of the summer and sea atmosphere indoors at their new place. Skiffer Ravintola Erottaja is definitely worth a visit. Try for example the FG with duck liver, figs, duck filet and mustard seeds or Fishermen's Friend with small fish, smoked salmon, fish roe and egg. Enjoy! It's definitely the best pizza in town!

There are white walls with two brick pillars in the middle of the restaurant. I ordered the Capitano pizza, which was absolutely delicious. Organic Finnish dry-cured ham, mozzarella, smoked cheese, and almond green pesto. Crust was incredibly soft and chewy, which I think is key in any Neopolitan pizza. The flavors from the sauce and cheese were incredible. The pesto was mixed with the red sauce perfectly, slightly sweet taste. The ham was good, slightly salty but not too much. I forget what my friend got but it had salami and looked great. I included a picture. Service was excellent. Waitress spoke perfect English (I think most people in Helsinki do). Even though it wasn't the best pizza I've ever had, it was very good, and I'm going to give 5 stars because I think they deserve it. 4.5/5 if I'm being technical. The dude was quick. The pizza size was large and they were remarkably economically priced. The chef was very flexible when we asked for a kid's pizza. The sauce was really really good. It was subtle, sweet, and not over seasoned with oregano and garlic, like other pizza places usually do. The crust, for me was too thin and hard. That's just a personal preference. This place had real Italian combinations on the pizzas, not the usual bizarre combos one finds in Finland. The cheese topping was real Italian cheese not Edam or sone other random Euroshopper hellacious cheese mix. Basically, this was the most authentic Italian pizzeria, that I've been to in Finland. I noticed on the Yelp app that this Italian eatery was about a five-minute walk from our hotel, so we decided why not. After all, we were bold enough to try ramen in the afternoon, so Italian food seemed marginally less risky given Rome is closer to Helsinki than Tokyo. Approaching the restaurant on a quiet side street, it turned out to be the main floor of a large apartment building with an enclosed patio where diners brought their dogs (photo: http://bit.ly/1WX2RaM). Inside the main area was a casual bar and eatery that looked like someone's 1970's-era den (photo: http://bit.ly/1T0koxs). The menu had a little bit of everything: pastas, pizzas, main and side dishes, and just one salad, the 15 € Insalata alla Caesar with grated Parmesan, a wedge of lemon, and a choice of a side. I decided on grilled octopus which came out as one thick, charred tentacle (photo: http://bit.ly/1YiYlC6). For my entree, I tried the 18 € Filetto di Manzo Marmorizzato (Grilled Marbled Fillet of Beef), which was a hefty, juicy portion of what tasted like skirt steak (photo: http://bit.ly/1WkDsZq). It was prepared medium rare and was certainly all the protein I could handle on a plate. Even though they offered vegetable sides, I still went for the 4 € Pasta al Aglio (with Garlic) which turned out to be a creamy garlic sauce the looked like it was squeezed out of a tube (photo: http://bit.ly/1qapyLH). It wasn't my favorite. Jamie got all predictable and ordered the 14 € Salame Classico Pizze with salami slices, artichoke hearts, and buffalo mozzarella. It was prepared rustically in an irregular shape with balsamic vinegar drizzled all over it (photo: http://bit.ly/1UOBf7z). It was the simple pizza Jamie wanted but not substantial enough to satisfy his appetite, which may explain why we made a beeline to downtown afterward for dessert at Kappeli. There was just one server for the restaurant, but he was adept at managing a lot of tables through the course of the evening. It's the type of place I probably wouldn't even notice back in the states, but there was a certain amount of cozy comfort found here that we enjoyed for a spell.
