Ferryland is about an hour and a half from St. John's, on the south coast of the Avalon peninsula. It's an area called the Irish Loop, and its full of coves and ponds along Route 10. Lighthouse Picnics is a business unlike most. In Summer months you book a picnic lunch way in advance, drive partially up a hill, then walk a little over a kilometer to a lighthouse where the keeper's house is now a kitchen where they prepare a basket for you. Bread and pastries are baked fresh each day. It's given to you in a straw basket, which you can take outside (picnic), or eat at one of the few tables inside. We showed up without a reserved meal, but they had one that was unclaimed, that we shared. If you're not as lucky, they do offer pastries and coffee or tea. We only found out about Ferryland from someone we met earlier in the day in Petty Cove. It turned out to be a unique, and delightfully surprising experience. read more
