You name it they have it amidst their stacked shelves. I have had keys cut here before that haven't worked, however they persistently re-cut them until they did and were very apologetic for their old and sometimes imprecise methods. They have all sorts, you won't be disappointed if you've come to stock up your tool kit with nails and wd-40, or to replace the worn out washer on the tap. Being a local, independent store it retains the character that large places lose. I like browsing in small hardware stores with fellow appreciators of the do-it-yourself philosophy and thinking 'what could be?' with some creativity and aforethought. This is certainly a hardware store worthy of browsing in.

The guy who is usually in there has always passed the time of day with me, asks how I've been and what have you. They're all really keen on being super-helpful as well, which is nice - and tend to be extremely apologetic if they've inconvenienced you in any way by not having something in stock that you need - which isn't that often. I don't think I've ever walked away from there empty-handed, as their few shelves are stacked to the rafters with all manner of D.I.Y paraphernalia. I like a locally-owned independent store cum Aladdin's Cave and this is no exception - full of character, full of mysterious objects and lovely staff.

The couple that run it are helpful and friendly and will locate something for you, and there's a fair chance you'll need their help! Parking can be a bit of a problem as this is right in the middle of Cotteridge. You can sometimes park on the pavement out front, but you'll be better off parking on Station Road, which is a few hundred yards away.

Anyway, Qutby's is definitely worthy of hardware shop status, and its tiny premises is jammed full of little nuts, bolts, pins, pieces of wood and much much more. Anything to do with home improvement, Qutby's will sell. Have you ran out of screws? Have you ran out of light bulbs? Have you ran out of glue?..... Head to Qutby's! You could literally go on an on, because they're bound to have it. The only problem is that there's no official order or sections within the shop, so as a new customer, you might struggle to find 'that piece of electrical equipment' that you're after. But obviously never fear to ask, because the staff will always find what you need. It might take them a good old rummage, but they'll get there in the end!

Jeffries is a huge hardware business that stocks all the standard nuts and bolts plus a huge selection of outdoor planting, perfect for this time of year, and has a large gardening section at the rear of the store. Recently I was after some fence protector and after a visit to a huge DIY shop felt frazzled by the choice in products, colours and price. One trip to Jeffries and I got exactly what I needed, no fuss, a great price and I parked my car at the rear of the store to load up. I also recently discovered they do key cutting. They stock a wide selection of pet products. The beauty of this place is that they've always got what you need and know exactly what you are asking for. On the very slim chance they don't stock what you are after they know where you should go to get it. Amazing staff and service.

In my case lots and lot of shelves of different sorts in many different locations. Their store of household, kitchen, bathroom and well any-room materials and bits and bobs is huge and there's no doubt that if you need to replace that strange halogen lightbulb that you never knew existed until it broke they will have it in stock. They are the king of industrial and craftsman supplies in the Kings Heath area.

Manjits also does plumbing and bathroom supplies inside their trade counter and have all sorts of fixtures and fittings that will help you with that loose tap. Manjits have been around for a while and no doubt gained a lot of know how in their time in the game. When visited we recieved a good service and the shop was recieving a steady amount of custom. Whether you're in the trade or just completing a little DIY, Manjit's provides and alternative to the larger DIY stockists and in my opinion provide a better service with a more specialist knowledge. It's located on the Alcester Rd and also provides home delivery for anything you can't carr home with you.

It's a family run business that has been around for as long as I can remember. They also cut keys, although it's been a while since I used that service, so whilst I can't comment it's always worth knowing where your local key cutting services are! Bear it in mind next time you need some spares. What I like about this place is that the owner always takes the time to make his outside display look fairly decent, whatever the weather. As he's situated on the main route through Kingstanding to New Oscott and Boldmere, and beyond, it's a fairly safe bet that you can pick up what you need en route (should you travel from South Brum to North Brum quite often, as I tend to do). The prices are reasonable and the service is always friendly - so I recommend popping in next time you need a fuse for a 13 Amp plug.
