They have also recently become licensed and host a great, casual Friday afternoon seen with live Jazz and a great wine menu. When this place first opened I swear the breakfast menu was much better value compared to what I have had recently, it may have been a newly opened promotion scenario but I'm not quite sure...Don't get me wrong what they offer is great and I will most likely be coming back, but I can no longer call it the best value breakfast in the city as the prices are verging on the edge of expensive. Alimentari is also Deli which offers a great selection of cheese, cold meats and an array of other delicacies you expect from a gourmet shop like this one. The service for the past 5 or 6 times I have been here (all during peak periods) has been seamless, and although there isn't table service and you must order at the counter, soon after you sit down you will have your beverage and not too long after that your meal. The 'Alimentari' breakfast seems a popular choice but for almost $20 I would appreciate more than just excess servings of bacon, I think I would prefer to see another egg added to the mix or some more vegetables. The coffee is great and the service is fast, give it a whirl, you won't be disappointed.

Initially I thought it was just a deli, but was delighted to see a menu and a coffee machine! I ordered a ham and cheese croissant and a coffee and sat down on one of the limited tables (it must be busy on weekday mornings with all the suits getting a fix before work). There wasn't a long wait before my breakfast was on my table, but in the mean time I got to have a wee browse of the deli and grocery section of Alimentari. It boasted lots of great Italian cheeses, cured meats, pastas, olives, sauces and oils. It's a place I would happily trade as my pantry! I tucked into my coffee which was great. I sensed a hint of hazlenut, but I hadn't ordered any syrups in my coffee. Perhaps they'd mixed my order up with someone else's but I wasn't too upset about it- the coffee was still rich and frothy. My ham and cheese croissant was also fantastic. They pastry was beautiful and flaky, clearly fresh out of the oven that morning. When I'm in the city next and in need of some breakfast, I'll definitely give the Alimentari menu and more extensive browse. It's a fantastic little spot and the service was good. The only thing I would change is that if they had one extra staff member in the mornings, they could easily make it table service which I think would add a touch more class to the place. Overall though I thought it was lovely and a nice change to the quick stop coffee and muffin places strewn throughout the city.

This cafe, awkwardly positioned in a pocket of Pickering Road, might seem familiar. Their interior…read morehas been done before - mismatched plates and cups, famous people as table numbers, kitsch china figurines and oddly, many lifesize jars of Nutella. But give it a chance. What gives this spot a point of difference, in my opinion, is their choose-your-own-adventure style breakfast menu. They give you the base (eggs and toast - $8.90) and the rest is up to you. Pulled pork (china town style, hoisin meets char siu and dances with soy), vegetable fritter, Haloumi, mushroom, hollandaise? The list is seemingly endless. I arrived to try it all out at 11:30ish on a Friday. It's not overly busy but noisy. You've been warned. The concrete shell of this store means sound proofing isn't an option. Their specialty drink appears to be a cappucino (Genovese beans) with weird and wonderful flavours like nutella or such mixed through. I stick with a flat white that's easy to drink but lacking any oomph. I had read a review previous to going that said ask for a double-shot if you prefer a real coffee kick and I'm inclined to agree. As tempted as I was by the sides menu, I opted for a 6-in Steak & Philly Sub ($10). I've never had a philly steak before but when my plate is served I'm a little lost as what to do with the second slice of baguette. Served as an open sandwich, I'd happily pay a little less for not having the lonesome slice of bread or pay a little extra to have more topping to use on the other slice. I'd actually also love to know if I could have swapped the baguette out for it all served on a bed of spinach. I quite like what's going on at Hansell & Gretel. It's not new but it is a new take on breakfast for this particular area which (and they're directly across the road from iconic Grub Street) I think makes it an interesting game of play for locals! I liked that it wasn't stuffy or pretentious, just familiar food done reasonably well.

It's small, unpretentious but a bit quirky, and does good food and coffee with friendly service and reasonable prices. The menu selection has some interesting things on there (each has a fairytale-themed name - cute), with a mix of savoury and sweet options, but what is excellent is the long list of extras that means you can tailor your meal to suit. I like being able to add avocado and haloumi to everything! There is also a small, slightly more lunch-focused section of the menu which has things like a burger, philly cheese steak sub, and banh mi. I'm told the philly cheese steak sub is good, it definitely is big! I haven't tried any of the sweet menu options yet, but so far the savoury things I've tried have been yum. They have a decent looking selection of cakes/muffins/etc, many of which are gluten-free or dairy-free (or both). Hansell & Gretel is right next to train (Gaythorne station) and bus (390), but free street parking is also available down nearby side-streets. Seating is both inside and outside, I just wish the outside seats got sunshine in winter! It should be a cooler outdoor spot in summer though to make up for it. Latest update: something has changed, and it's more than the refreshed menu with higher prices (that now exceed the value for money tipping point in my opinion - I know the Woodchopper's Breakfast is huge but it's also $28 and for breakfast I just can't bring myself to pay that). I can't quite put my finger on it but H&G is definitely not as great as it used to be, unfortunately. The coffee is still good, they still play good music, and the sweet treats cabinet still rates highly, but my brunch devotion has waned in favour of other places in the area.

They are situated right behind the Homemaker's centre on Groggs Road and there honestly isn't much out there apart from a retirement home, day care centre and DFO up the street. I found the place at a friend's suggestion to meet for coffee and breakfast. They had a small deli section with some prosciutto and cheese as well some local homemade products for sale (jams, jewellery, books). Its not a huge space but is big enough for sufficient seating inside and outside. The decor was lovely, modern yet has that French art-decor style about it. They server, coffees, drinks, breakfast and lunches. I was here for a breakfast with a friend and we both orders a mug of Chai latte and a Prosciutto and cheese croissant. Both items were decent, good, not blow your mind spectacular, but good. We did come on a Monday morning so it wasn't very busy, but also not scary quite. Would I come here again? I think so. Though the location worries me a little as it is a bit out of the way for most people. I hope they would still be here the next time I'm in town.

The people here are absolutely lovely and bend over backwards to make you happy, particularly if you're a repeat customer. The food on offer isn't mind-blowingly original (think hotbox full of dim sum, crumbed sausages, chicken drumsticks; a black board offering burgers, toasties, hotdogs etc) but it is filling and cheap. If you want something less greasy you can always ask for a freshly made sandwich. They do espresso coffee too (unusual for a greasy spoon) and a decent breakfast menu, which you can enjoy at one of the footpath tables. I also appreciate that they have endless self serve sauces (everything from tomato, BBQ, mayo, vinegar, mustard and more) instead of those stupid little sachets for 30 cents a go -- complete bulls**t.
