Basically you get your a scanner which you use as you go round the store, scanning barcodes. The idea is to make things quicker. I use it because its a gadget! But it is quicker as packing bag at same time and the Scan as you go queue tends to be much quieter. This store has a lot of the Tesco facilities like Click+Collect, Petrol, Pharmacy, Wifi and clothing.Its also got a wide range of food such as Polish, Halal, and Afro Caribbean. But at the end of the day, its a supermarket!

One of the overwhelming advantages of such communities however, which I'm sure will gain universal approval is their complete immunity from being threatened by giant retail food chains. You know the ones I'm talking about, the ones that've been driving out small independents outta business across across the country. I LOVE the fact that the communities remain militantly loyal to local foodstores like Madina. Upon close inspection, turns out the reason is a little more complex than just cultural affiliation. One of the main one reasons? This place is AWESOME!! There's literally a library of spices to buy (at BARGAIN prices) and experiment at home with. Any foodie/charlie out there who's sick of the monotonous nature of the shopping experience, will find this to be their culinary/chocolate factory. True, London probably bigger volume of such establishments, but they probably cant beat us for sheer quality. So next time you're stuck in traffic driving to town on Stockport road (through Levenshulme) have a break, and instead of having a kitkat, park up and have a cheeky gander.

With the UK 'hungry gap' upon us, I bagged a box of lychees plus sundry Desi vegetable and fresh herbs. Freshness of the produce was very good, although a bit of banter with a Desi customer revealed that he was passing up on the tinda as being too big - although this is no doubt an out-of-season issue. For the mobile cosmopolitan foodie such as myself, the aim is to know where all the ethnic food stores are so that ethnic food shopping can be done with a minimum of detour from other city business and pleasure. Although there is nothing really oustanding about Madina Superstore to make you travel beyond your nearest Desi superstore, it is nice to have a proper Desi supermarket in Levenshulme to save Levy locals a trip up Stockport Road to Longsight. And visitors such as myself can combine a visit to Madina Superstore with a trip to the monthly Levy Market, or else the permanent Trove café bakery or POD deli.

As well as being another central hub of Manchester's south Asian community it's also adjacent to Manchester's Jewish community. This Superstore sits inbetween the two communities and is buzzing with activity all week long. It's probably one of the biggest stores of its kind in the city. The summertime is a perfect time to visit, for me at least because it's mango season! Honey mangos are shipped in all the way from Pakistan and are priced very reasonably considering they are HEAVENLY! There's also a butchers in house and the store houses a library of herbs and spices. In short there are stores like this littered aross the city in smaller denominations. And in all honesty they probably cater for all the things that are available here. But if you want that remote spice from a youtube recipe or want a faluda flavour ice cream like I do, this is the only place to go.

There are actually two large premises of Manchester Superstore directly opposite each other on either side of Cheetham Hill Road, and if you are into these kind of stores then you will need to check them both out! It may be the case that the one on the left as you travel out of town is more for a quick shop, but it also has a bunch of stuff upstairs - cookware, and kebab shop consumables! Across the road - on the right hand side of the road as you travel out of town - is a building of impressive architecture, which seems to be the wholesale premises, although it is open to the general public, no problem, and this is where I will be shopping from now on. I go for fresh produce, and freshness was above average plus I think Cheetham Hill prices are a bit lower. Just the usual routine for me - stocked up with okra, drumstick, karela, fresh chickpeas, plus fresh herbs which are the bargain of the century at 2 huge bunches for £1. Always good for a bit of ethnic atmosphere. Not quite as much of a feeling of a well-oiled machine as say Worldwide in Rusholme and not as busy at the tills, but the manager is a bit more friendly here on my visit, and opened up another till to get me through quickly. Really love my Desi supermarkets!

I'm not a fan of ASDA Hulme…read more.. It's great in that it's huge, even had clothes and technology stuff upstairs... The downsides far outweigh the good! The veg section smells like sick... in the last two weeks I've been 3-4 times and each time the fresh produce section stinks... it's really off-putting and means I don't end up buying anything fresh. There's also a larger than normal amount of rude people shopping there. Pushing past you, generally irate customers... on top of this we always seem to get a member of staff on the checkouts that is stuck on slow... All in all I like having a good meander around to see what the retail giants have on offer but I find when I visit ASDA Hulme I just want to get out of there ASAP. Sorry ASDA Hulme you just don't cut mustard... and you stink...

Back in Liverpool myself and my better half would become truely excited at the prospect of visiting…read morethe local Asda. Why I hear you cry? Because as students in a time where most clubs/pubs did not have a 24hr license and shut at 1am/2am there was nothing more fum that a drunken wander around asda to see what rubbish we could buy. When we arrived in Manchester we had no idea that round the corner to our delight there was....a 24hr Asda. However gone are the days that we cannot stay in the clubs/pubs til 4am and now Asda has become to us what it is to every other grown up individual....a hassle on a Sunday, an obstacle course through crying children and down and outs. I am only consoled by the fact we do stay in the clubs/pubs till 4am and that our drunken trips to ASDA have not ceased to continue because we are getting old and boring. Asda we still love you, we love you for making us feel at home wherever we go.

Since when can cheap like Aldi hit the high street and be successful. Because we thrifty lot can…read moresometimes make do with some cheap tin of beans and tomato sauce. Aldi is huge. Not just about the food items, there's cameras and biking gear going for really cheap. I once went to a packed out house party. Aldi alcohol and snacks and they were proud. It all tasted and did the same thing. We even did a taste test between Strongbow and Aldi cider. Similar, very similar. Although it is undoubtedly super cheap, there's just some things I can't buy cheap. Like eggs, 99p for ten eggs, but caged harmful chicken eggs. The fruit and vegetable is supposed to be fresh daily but there are not dates on them, so that's a no no for me too. Meat, I'm just too fussy. But having said that, I will often find some mozarella, some munchy snacks, some tinned tomatoes and herbs. Aldi saves me half the money for those items.

According to the locals, this is a bigger store than the regular ones. If I get a chance to visit a regular store, I'll confirm, lol. This one does have 2 levels, and you can take the lift (elevator) or the escaltors escalators. The escalator going down wasn't working the times I've been, but just walk down anyway. They have cashiers for check out as well as self check-out lanes. Prices here are awesome! I'm a huge fan of their bakery bread and the snacks. Their sparkling water game is pretty strong, too. Don't be shocked if I check in here again, lol!

The Liverpool One branch of Superstore is not actually the most super I have come across in Liverpool as there is one in Litherland which is gargantuan in comparison. However, Liverpool One Tesco is certainly what the town needs. You still have plenty of choice here, a variety of sections such as deli, clothes and international foods to keep you adding more to your basket! I find this place more of a relaxing and enjoyable shopping experience as opposed to the Metro version by the big screen, because its more spacious and offers an abundance of products. The location isn't great if you're driving there as it'll cost you pounds to park somewhere nearby but certainly convenient when you have other chores to do around town.

Apart from the Big Brother car park to prevent people coming to park all day there, it's a very efficient way of keeping people moving so you can get a decent space. Now the trolley's require a £1 coin, so make sure to keep one spare (or get one of those token's you can put on your keys!). Walking in to this store is a spacious area, scrap that, everywhere is pretty spacious in here which is great. Compared to other superstores where their aisles are cramped, this is a place that is more accommodating, fresh and relieving. They have definitely accounted for lots of shoppers making their way through the store! The lighting is bright, airy and not too gleaming on your eyes. As you walk in on your right will be the clothing and there's a big section dedicated to this. I've greatly appreciated the range of items available to buy when I've been desperate for something. AND there's always a sale on lots of items! As usually, I'm moving swiftly on to their gluten-free range. WOW. They've actually got *drum roll* big gingerbread men biscuits! They're soft, and so yummy! And and and they have everything gluten-free you could possibly hope for in a store. Compared to other big retailers, such as Tesco nearby, Sainsburys has 1-up'd them on their bread range. Possibly 1-up'd even Asda. If you need any help, ask a staff member and they will be more than willing to direct you or find something you're looking for with a smile on their face. Being one of the biggest supermarkets on the fringes of the city centre I imagined it would be easy enough to pick everything up and make it home with plenty of time to whip it up for New Year's Eve. What I didn't account for was the long queue to get into Sainsbury's car park, the hundreds of frantic shoppers desperately scanning the store for any left over bottles of sparkling and the mass of empty shelves. Yup. There was - wait for this - no buffalo mozzarella, no ricotta, no eggs and no spinach left. I asked an assistant if there was a pasta making contest taking place anywhere and he laughingly remarked that there hadn't been any of the ingredients since 9am. He did however, find me two bottles of good Prosecco and offer to phone a local branch to check if they had the other ingredients.

This Tesco Extra is quite a large store in Salford city center, right opposite the run down,…read morehorrible Salford City mall. This is a large store, you can park on one floor and then you get the lift from the entrance and can get on the shop floor level. This store actually isn't a 24 hour store, which is surprising for a store of its' size, instead only going between 6am and midnight, which is still reasonable, it is open until 5pm on Sunday's which is useful. They have Scan as you shop facilities, which are quite handy machines. The Customer service desk is quite nice, and modern compared to other stores, especially rival chains such as ASDA and Morrisons. Still despite the size, this isn't a very nice store for shopping, the layout looks nice and modern, as it is a relatively new store I hear, but other than frozen gluten free scampi the range was quite poor. The stock just seemed really depleted, and the stock of most items was low and quite poor for a store of its' size, and the more I got into the store, the more dissapointed I felt. I was pleased to pick up some nice ham from the Deli, which was cut to my liking, but still the bacon ribs I picked up were cheap at a reduced price of £1 from £2, but still they tasted really fatty and I actually got a small bone stuck in my throat, which was unpleasant and shown bad quality produce, down to how the store produced it. I'm finding it hard to "Rate" this store as I can argue for giving it both 1 and 2 stars, with 1.5 being more right, but due to issues faced I feel I can't go to 2 stars, while also considering the surrounding areas and issues with the store its-self, albeit it is probably at the top end of the 1 star rating, and although I admit this is slightly unfair, I can't warrant giving 2 stars as frankly, it doesn't seem to deserve it. UPDATE: I feel I was being a little unfair with this store as they do have a decent Deli Counter and a satisfactory gluten free range, and a few other minor things which I feel have deserved the upgrade from a single one star to two.
