I just started learning Italian half a year ago so thought I'd drop in and see if I could find a modern Italian novel that doesn't have post-modern Italian, but something I could reliably derive grammar and vocab from. So I tried my best to get that across to the bearded gentleman who I suspect is the proprietor. What a great guy. His English may not be perfect, but it's far better than my Italian! We went from that brief exchange to some chatting about Italian cinema and Monica Vitti. He pointed out the cool vintage movie posters decorating this place. May seem like a little thing, but experiences like this just made me love visiting Rome all the more. Grazie mille!

We walked in and an older gentleman in the front walked away from us without a greeting. The store has no rhyme or reason to it. Nothing is marked and there are no sections, just books everywhere. Another gentleman walked by us without a greeting and finally asked us if we needed help since we probably looked lost. My husband showed him a photo of 4 books and without even really looking, he blew us off and said no. The whole experience was strange and these were the first rude people we had to deal with after two days in Rome. Even if they had the books, we would have left without buying them because both men were rude and seemed to not want us in their empty bookstore. Perhaps they would have more business if they were a bit friendlier.

I was so happy that they were able to fulfill my order of English language museum guides. I had been very disappointed that the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli didn't have any on hand. I'm guessing it's because so many people buy the Electa published guides. They are always so well done. Well, fortunately Feltrinelli had them in stock. I was also able to find one for the Museo Ostiense, which I neglected to buy when I was there. The prices are fair, and the shipment was delivered in a very short amount of time. Three different employees that I asked to point me in the right direction were so rude, had grimaces on their faces, acted like I was a total bother to them. When making a purchase at the register the rude cashier didn't even open the bag, half shoved my book inside and pushed it across the counter. And I try to use as much Italian as I can, so it's not like I'm acting like an entitled American. We've been in Italy for two weeks, 3 cities, stayed in luxury hotels as well as dreary urban areas and these are the rudest, most unfriendly people that we've encountered.
