Geek that I am, I…read morewanted to go book shopping while in the Mexican Riviera - nothing in Cozumel but I was told by some of the shopkeepers in Playa del Carmen that there was a bookstore in the mall in the heart of the city. At first I was disappointed as it is kind of small, but the shelves were overflowing and the man at the counter was very helpful pointing me to the right sections(bearing with my not-close-to-fluent Spanish). I found what I was looking for and learned that John Katzenbach (a mystery/thriller writer) apparently is very popular down there - they had his complete (translated) works!

Luckily we found Gandhi located just a 10 minute walk from our place. It's a small but mighty little bookstore, packed with books in multiple languages (including a substantial English-language section). They had several recognizable best sellers as well as true classics. And they even had a copy of a book that's been on my Goodreads bookshelf for years! Their prices are a pretty much full retail, so don't expect the "big box" discount you might be used to. But if you're in PDC and in need of a book to read, you've come to the right place! (They also had a lovely little stationary section with journals, gifts, games, and art supplies too.)

I was hoping to find a vegan restaurant - and while I did seem to find Coqui Coqui and their…read moreextravagant air conditioning, it seemed to be just a perfume store. I say "seemed" because there was no signage and not a single person appeared to be watching the shop. I poked around for 5-10 minutes and nobody came out even after I called out to see if anyone was around. Maybe they were on a bathroom break and forgot to lock the door? This ain't oakland, that's for sure! At least I got to cool down in their AC for a few moments while it was nearly 100F outdoors during my visit in May 2025.
