My son has excellent dental insurance and, throughout his previous visits, he has never had to pay out of pocket for his dental care. During his most recent visit, however, his regular dentist was unavailable, so the office assigned him to another dentist. He was not informed beforehand that this dentist did not participate with his insurance. After the visit, my son received a bill for nearly $500. When he contacted the office manager, he was initially told that it was a computer error and that he should simply pay the bill and would be reimbursed. One of the employees then suggested that he contact his insurance company directly to find out why the claim had not been covered. When my son contacted the insurance company, he was told that the reason for the bill was that the dentist he was assigned to did not accept his insurance. My concern is that the office should have informed him before the appointment that he was being seen by a dentist who was not participating with his insurance. Had he been told, he could have chosen to reschedule with his regular dentist or make an informed decision about whether to proceed. Unfortunately, when my son tried to discuss the situation with the office manager, he felt that she was uncooperative and unwilling to work with him, simply insisting that he was responsible for paying the bill She was very nasty from the beginning of the conversation to the end. I believe patients should be clearly informed about insurance participation and potential out-of-pocket costs before receiving treatment, not after receiving an unexpected bill. I am sharing this experience so other patients can ask questions and verify that the dentist they are scheduled with accepts their insurance before proceeding.
