    Lexington Cemetery

I forgot that cemeteries closed and this one definitely does. The front gate is locked at closing time. That's a bummer. I did get the opportunity to enjoy the front and looked around from there, but I'm definitely not going to trespass these days. Lexington Cemetery is a private, non-profit 170-acre cemetery that is open to the public from 8am to 5pm. Established in 1848, there are more than 64,000 interments including Congresspeople, Senators and Generals from both the Confederacy and the Union, and Jim Varney (you'll know him as Ernest from a number of eponymous films). Definitely stop between 8 and 5, even in the summer when it's light until 10pm. [Review 13485 overall, 804 of 2020.]

Place is beautiful, if you catch at right times in spring. The different trees are blooming. The window of opportunity is short. Lots of great places to get some great photos. Somewhere around mid April ought to another good time. Place of beauty...

One of most serene places in Lexington. Even as traffic bustles down Leestown road, the quietness fills you as you enter. The road noises seem to fall away as you walk deep into the shade of the trees. You can look back at all of those people that came before you and know that you are standing in a piece of history. The grounds are beautiful. There are large statues and ornate mausoleums along the narrow roads to the different sections. As a kid, I always thought it would be neat to hang out in the ones that are the size of houses. (I'm over that phase) I don't personally have family here so I try to be as respectful as possible. I have noticed that there are now a ton of pokestops and pokegyms so I imagine that has brought a bit more traffic in to the area. If you go for that reason remember to be respectful. Even if you are going to meditate, reflect or learn about history, try to keep in mind some people are visiting their loved ones.

Is Henry Clay really in there? Yes, he is and Lucretia, too!

Dream Girl and I were cruising the historic neighborhoods of Lexington looking at the many lovely houses when we stumbled upon Lexington Cemetery. We like old cemeteries so this was right up our alley. I have seen many cemeteries around the world and this is one of the prettiest of them all. Cemeteries in the 19th Century were often designed as parks where families would go to stroll around and picnic. Even in my mid-century youth I remember Nashvillians who would go to the cemetery on Sunday afternoons to see Grandpa and Grandma's graves and to just get out and walk around. Lexington Cemetery is your place if you want to do that. The old-growth trees, ponds, and plantings make it a wonderful park as well as a cemetery. We visited the Henry and Lucretia Clay monument and the nearby grave of John Hunt Morgan, Confederate notable and Lexington native. Not to be missed is the enormous American Basswood, over 230 years old, that stands near the Clay monument. I am on the friends board of the old Nashville City Cemetery so will echo other reviewers who remind you to not park on the grass.

Founded back in 1849 when cemeteries were built more as gardens or parks for people to enjoy rather than just for burials. It's 170 acres of pure serenity on Main Street / Leestown Road right on the edge of downtown. This cemetery with it's winding roads and hills has little hidden gardens and ponds to find if you love to wander. There are two large ponds with benches to feed the ducks and geese who remain year round. This cemetery is a wonder during every season. Winter is magical. Spring is a Tulip explosion of color. If you're a photographer this is a must see. The many statues, some marble others bronze, are beautiful. The bronze angel across from the Memorial Arbor is magnificent. She is often holding something that coincides with the season. You'll see runners and joggers but everyone is very respectful and avoids areas where funerals are being conducted. Above all, be respectful to the visitors and the cemetery itself. I do volunteer photography for Find A Grave (I also have ancestors there) so I am in the cemetery on a weekly basis and have never had a problem. Many cemeteries can be dangerous. I had my car broken into at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga. While I was still within sight of it. Never had a problem here and don't worry about keeping my car in sight (although I do carry mace because you can never be too careful. I'm retired military so I am very mindful of my surroundings.) This cemetery is also much more beautiful and peaceful than Bonaventure. Be sure to stop and pick up a map outside the office. As often as I go there I still end up using it :) If your looking for the historical grave sites use the map and keep an eye out, there are signs along the roads pointing the way. If you have the chance you should stop and at the very least drive through. There is a lot of history here and it can be felt. Be sure to keep an eye on the time. During the week it closes at five (or 5:30) on the weekends at four. You don't want to get yourself locked in.

Lexington Cemetery is a must-see in early spring (end of March) with the Cherry Blossom's blooming! It will be busy there with photography.

In the beginning, everything went well. The problems arose when we went to pick up our son. We had an appointment, and the person did not show up until 1 hour later. Today is June 9, 2022, and we have yet to receive our son's death certificate. I had to purchase one from the state of Kentucky because we had to settle his affairs. The most important being monthly benefits for our son's 3-year-old daughter through Social Security. I have contacted Layken and have not received a response. After talking to the deputy coroner, she informed me that others had had the same problem. As soon as I can find the correct person to report this business to, besides the Better Business Bureau, I will report this business. Very disappointed and do not recommend this business. I wish I had gone to Care Cremation and paid the extra $200. When something is unexpected, not everyone has tons of money lying around. The price was the only reason we chose this place. We should not have had to wait for our son's ashes. We are devastated at our son's loss, adding more pain to what we were and are experiencing.

He was super nice and helpful but when it came down to the funeral, it just wasn't worth the money. My sister had, had her husbands funeral here 4 months prior to that and was less than pleased. Anyways, my mom passed away and I immediately chose Kerr Brothers. We met with a nice gentleman name Trevor. Come the day of the funeral, I dealt with a man I had never met. I asked him if my mom looked good because I chose to see her at the funeral home as opposed to lying in her bed. He told me he thought she looked good. When we went in for the private viewing I was mortified. My mother looked like a melting snowman. He make-up and lips were awful. She had blood running out of her mouth. It looked nothing like her and she would have been very upset allowing people to view her like that. Also, she didn't have on her scarf so we could see all of her chest which was purple. I asked about the scarf and why the slideshow wasn't playing. I was told both the USB and the scarf were in the bottom of the casket, and we were asked to leave the room while they got it. Why did we have to leave? It makes me wonder if they cut her legs off to fit her in in the casket. Anyways, I chose to close the casket as she was in no viewing condition. Many people were upset about not viewing her so they could get that closure. So was I, so I couldn't blame them. We went on with the funeral. A few days later I met up with Trevor about my disappointments. He said they would take off the prep fee. That's great, but what about the viewing fee? She wasn't even viewable?! I guess something is better than nothing? Although I feel morally that they should have done more. I can't unsee the things I seen. I can't take away grief. Well, they got paid. I was going to pre-strange my funeral there but def will be taking my large insurance policy elsewhere. Goodbye to Kerr Brothers.

By 2:30 we had times, clothes, minister, music, opening & closing, obituary, flowers, and literally everything wrapped up. In fairness, we are long-time Kerr Brothers associates. They have always been very good to my family and my wife has made me swear an oath that if she goes before me, I will take her nowhere but Kerr Brothers. When my Brother dies in 1979, Kerr Brothers was there. When my dad died five years ago, they were there. And this morning, they were there. The gentleman who met with me today said he would be there all weekend if I needed anything. I remain a Kerr Brothers fan. Never been to a funeral here where the family was not very pleased with the choice.
