The cemetery is very well maintained and has clean restroom facilities. It's also usually quiet whenever I'm here, and I never had any issues with parking spaces. Entry from the highway is rather easy, whether you're arriving here from Route 72 or Interstate 81. If you're in Central PA, be sure to stop by and look. There's even a useful computer kiosk at the visitors center where you can look up grave sites, too.

It was a stunning first impression. The majestic flags billowing in the pre-dawn light, a light misty fog lingering in the rainy air. The complex is expansive with rolling lawns and cemeteries. It immediately reminded me of Arlington. I followed the signs down roads that twist and turn, until finally I came to the memorial. It's vastness surprised me. I'll admit, after living in DC for a time, I didn't think a monument in rural Pennsylvania could compare. The parking lot was empty, not a soul in sight, which only added to the somber mood and grayness of the day. The way the monument is designed, it gave me the feeling of both despair and hope. The entranceway is grand and proud. Marble foyers are smooth and hard. The row of fountains spout with jubilee. The trees breathe life. But the relic of a burned out European building reminds you why are there and of the many veterans of WWII who sacrificed for you. It is a memorial that rivals any in DC. There are clean and modern bathrooms onsite.

The service I used was to order a monument for my fathers gravesite. Working with the director was pleasant, but didn't seem that my business was really wanted since I was not local (our interactions were conducted via email and phone). I placed and order for the monument, above my requested budget, and was not provided any follow-up details for processing, timelines, etc... When I received the invoice in the mail, there were no line items broken out for the monument, services, or fees, just all bundled together into a single line item. After several e-mails (no responses), and follow-up calls, I was able to get a timeline for the placement of the monument (about 5 months). Now, the date provided for placement has come and gone and I have not heard from the director or home. I drove out to the gravesite and the cemetery has a placement ready for the monument but no monument is there. I am now forced to follow-up again to determine where the monument is and how much longer it will be. My only advice for the funeral home: follow-up and customer service goes a long way.

Despite the hardship that normally comes with this part of life, I have nothing but positive things to say about Finkenbinder / Rothermel. Dave my assigned funeral director handled anything and everything then I had to deal with during this time period. He boiled everything down and made it straightforward so that I could quickly make choices and pretty much guided me through the whole process. He definitely went above and beyond while helping me work through some issues with a county coroner's office. I've had to deal with many vendors and various services during this time, but I can honestly say that the funeral services for my father were one of the easiest parts of the entire ordeal. I cannot say enough I cannot say "thank you" enough as they were always right on point and handling things before I even thought of them. I highly recommend their services.

Our family (going back to our grandparents) has been a loyal/regular user of Myers (and later…read moreBuhrig) Funeral Home since the early 1950s. However, because of a practice by Buhrig, specifically by Bob Buhrig and Kirk Freed, specifically where they INSIST that veteran's Death Certificates are $20.00 when, in fact, they are to be FREE, regardless of whether one obtains from from Vital Statistics or via a Registrar (which is an arm of Vital Statistics), that stance CROSSED THE LINE. Granted, to some this may be a small issue...but...it is a BLACK AND WHITE issue...and if Buhrig is going to overcharge in THIS area, it destroys ANY AND ALL sense of ETHICS in its other financial areas. If you do a search on other funeral homes and read where they address veteran death certificates, you'll find that they ALL state they are free of charge. But, Buhrig, even after being called-out on this specific matter, STILL insists they are $20.00 each, and will even suggest that you buy ten (10) certificates for potential executor tasks (i.e. pensions, bank accounts, insurance policies, et cetera). I can't help but believe that Buhrig is "pocketing" these $20.00 charges (for EACH certificate) for veterans (and SPOUSES of such veterans). They are also overly greedy in certain other areas of their services. For example, they charge $140 for a mere register book (where visitors to the viewing/funeral sign their names). You can buy a comparable or better register book online for a mere $20-$25. They also suggest an honorarium of $200-$400 for the pastor whereas other funeral homes suggest a going rate is around $175. What does Buhrig care; it's not THEIR money; they simply prey on the grieving and vulnerable family. For the first time in over 70 years, our family has decided that we will no longer do business with Buhrig based on THIS incident...and...based on other "concerning" observations when it comes to their transparencies. No way. I have even consulted with the State Investigator to look into their veteran death certificate practices, and am happy to see that in our initial telephone conversation, they are taking a HARD look into Buhrig. We shall see what the outcome is, but [again] in our initial conversations, I do feel that Buhrig will become "enlightened" that they can't pull this on everybody. They had taken the wrong stance with the wrong customer!!! And...if you opt to set up an Irrevocable Burial Reserve Account (IBRA) as part of your pre-planning tasks, do NOT be misled that you MUST submit these through Buhrig Funeral Home. You can set these up in a variety of financial institutions -- not ONLY funeral homes.

Ownership has changed and it is now run by the owner of the Bunnell Funeral Home's in Bloomsburg and Millville. The funeral home sits alongside a rural road in the country outside of Catawissa. Entrance to the building now varies with the size of the funeral, it can either be in the original back entrance or the new handicap accessible entrance that has been built in front of the building. The parking lot can become quite crowded if it's a larger funeral. Due to some rearrangement and changes in placements, seating has been increased for the family with the addition of a few dozen seats. Interior still holds about fifty seats for mourners, with room for twenty additional people standing. The interior is simple and dim. I would describe it as if you were going to your grandparent's house in many ways; older style furniture sits against the back and sides for people who can't sit comfortably in the wood folding chairs. It can get a bit warm inside if there's a larger funeral. The carpeting has been completely replaced as part of the recent changes. The people here really do a good job in your time of mourning. Everything was beautifully prepared for the funeral; they take the time to make sure they know about the person's life. Funeral was nothing but smooth making it an easier time for everyone involved. They do a great job at making the situation about as well as it can be.
