After months of hearing whispered legends about this spot, I finally succumbed to the rumors…read more Stepping inside Happiness Lab in Mijas Pueblo felt less like entering a modern cafe and more like tumbling headfirst into a fantasy novel. The counters and shelves are piled high with a near-infinite mountain of coffee beans, glossy chocolate drops, and artisanal bars. It feels like a friendly witch's cottage or a medieval apothecary. The magic is reinforced by a beautiful commitment to tradition: there is a complete absence of plastic. Everything lives safely in crinkly paper packages or giant glass jars, letting you peek at the treasures inside. I didn't spot any phoenix tears, dragon blood, or pixie dust on this first trip. However, I am entirely convinced that once I become a familiar face and get invited into the secret back room, those rare curiosities will be offered to me. I am already considering to trade my soul for a lifetime supply. The ordering counter sits outside, accompanied by a few tables and chairs where you can gorge on your chosen potions. The ice cream, gelato, and sorbets come in a plethora of flavors, completely customizable with your choice of chocolate bar and drizzle. I opted for a vibrant mango sorbet paired with banoffee gelato, washed down with a hot latte. What followed was sheer wizardry. The mango actually tasted like real, sun-ripened mango. The banana tasted purely of banana. Sweet as can be but I'm not tasting sugar. There is no nefarious chemical trickery here to fool your brain. The texture is sublime--completely free of the graininess of ill-formed ice crystals or the grittiness of subpar ingredients. Next, I bit into the dark chocolate bar I had chosen. There was not a single hint of bitterness; it possessed the pure, unadulterated pleasure that mass-market chocolate lost long ago. The chocolate drizzle had solidified against the cold scoop, but it immediately turned to liquid amber the moment it hit my tongue. That is when the real magic happened. As the flavors and textures coated my taste buds simultaneously, reality began to blur. I looked back into the shop, half-expecting to see Oompa Loompas carrying sacks of cacao or Willy Wonka himself supervising the kitchen. I looked out into the sunlit square, and the tourists seemed to convene in perfect formation, moving like a crowd in a Bollywood musical or Michael Jackson's Thriller. The smoothness of the dark chocolate danced over my tongue akin to a flawless moonwalk, while the choreographed harmony of mango and banana initiated a heavenly, romantic affair in my mind. Even the coffee refused to be a background actor. I took a sip and the witchcraft continued; it was smooth, perfectly balanced, and entirely devoid of any bitter aftertaste. It was every bit as musical as the main event. Back to Reality Suddenly, the spell broke and reality hit. I blinked. Did I just imagine an entire square of people dancing? I looked down at the dessert in my hands--my precious--and smiled. What an absolute delight. And to think... that was only the first spoonful. Can you buy happiness? Perhaps you can. And at Happiness Lab, the price is worth every single cent.

The fruits and spices flavors include mango, honey, mandarin, orange, mint, pepper, cocoa, yogurt, cinnamon, and many others. My personal favorites are mango, honey, and mandarin. I bought several to bring home as the perfect gift to bring for each person. The chocolate are sold by weights, but 3 packs are approximately $8 euro or so. They also have other types of chocolate with mixed nuts, which is quite good as well. I highly recommend stopping by Abuela Ili for some wonderful bring-back home souvenirs for your friends and families back home.
