It is easy to recognize a gas ripened tomato in the United States. It is not so easy to recognize a gas ripened tomato in France. The tomatoes all look gorgeous. Gas-ripeneds and un-ripeneds exist though. You will never know until you cut into them. * * * I have not bought tomatoes at Palais des Fruits - but tomatoes would be the acid test of quality. (No making jokes claiming that lemons or grapefruit are the acid test of quality.) However, I have bought gas-ripened tomatoes from the produce store across from Palais des Fruits - and everything else in my produce bag was just fine. This market runs for a couple of blocks along Raspail, starts at the entrance to Metro stop Rennes and runs on down the street. Open on Tuesday & Friday and the organic market is on Sunday. They also have one of the best rotisserie chicken places ive tried anywhere, its an Asian man who owns that booth and his rotisserie chicken and roasted potatoes are just amazing, a small chicken is only about 6 euro which is a bargain in Paris. The minute I get home I have to dig into it even if its still breakfast time. Ohhhh and the cheese vendors are also plentiful as are the vegetable vendors, all of its so fresh and tasty!

I opted instead for Marche d'Aligre, reasoning that it featured not only a small flea market but also a farmer's market and a market hall. The guide I consulted described Marche d'Aligre as a spot for locals, featuring some of the cheapest produce in Paris. I can't speak to that but I did think everything - including the many meats, seafood, cheeses, and more in the market hall - looked quite fabulous. The swap meet? A little less so. The sole flea market thing that caught my eye suddenly jumped in price when I pulled out my cash but I did see one vendor actively negotiate with a tourist when she found a price out of her reach. That said, this isn't a flea market I'd set out for again; it's plaza-sized (maybe 20 vendors) and the offerings struck me as rather junky. If I had time for only one of Paris' great open-air food markets this isn't the one I'd choose despite the fact that I enjoyed my visit here.

I especially loved the prepared meat in the stall near the entrance (they have many prepared items to choose from--I ended up loving the duck foie gras and duck rillette). Also, people were helpful and willing to deal with my poor French :) As another reviewer mentioned, there aren't many (perhaps any) ready-to-way meals. But I wasn't looking for that, and I found the quality to be fantastic.
