On our trip to the Normandy region of France we got in pretty late to the City of Angers and after finishing up settling in we went out on the hunt for something to eat. Lucky for us after a relatively short walk, we came across Matt Murphy's Irish Pub. I can't say how happy I was to see a pub style establishment that was open as it was pretty late. The food, beer, service was excellent and the owner behind the bar was extremely friendly and helpful as well. They appreciated my speaking and ordering in French; however, they were very cool and spoke to us in English as well with none of the stereotype attitudes we have all heard about. We kept it simple and had a cheeseburger, fries and the fish and chips. Overall the menu has a little for everyone with all the typical items you would expect to see at a pub. Comfort food for the perfect end to a perfect day. I mean we are in France!! C'est magnifique! So if you find yourself If you find yourself visiting Angers and want a laid back atmosphere to let your hair down, have a few pints of beer, a little food and recount the days activities then Matt Murphy's fits the bill. You can hear amazing musicians most evenings, the outdoor space is lovely right across from The Pale too. Inside it's a little small but just right for a lounge and bar atmosphere. I had a grog, which was hot lemon, maybe a little ginger? maple syrup or honey and definitely rum! They serve hot tea as well. I was drawn in the other day by the amazing house band, The Balkanic Orchestra, I believe. See videos - they were awesome! I've heard other jazz trios and amazing live performances. The taps are clean and everything is very well-poured. The bar itself is also a very pleasant space, with a large indoor/outdoor area that opens onto the street at the front (smoking permitted), and an airy, high-ceiling interior, more reminiscent of a German beer-hall than a brasserie. Great bottles and interesting glassware in cases are the primary decorations. The crowd is a mix of regulars, locals, young people, with a smattering of tourists (though most are across the canal). Service is friendly and helpful. It's also quite spacious, with plenty of tables and seats, so would be good to bring a group of friends. The prices are excellent--3.50 Euros for a delicious glass of Belgian draft can't be beat!

Serving meals all day every day, The Celtic is an ideal place to pop into for a beer, snack or for an evening meal. With seating both outside and upstairs, it's good for group entertaining. Beers and wines are plentiful (Leffe, Hoegarden, Duval and local types sitting comfortably alongside better knowns such as Stella and Guiness!) but suprisingly, The Celtic serves a wide range of alcoholic and non alcoholic cocktails, presented in a strangely tropical and extravagant way that even Del Boy would be proud of! Delicious, and well worth trying, especially the one featuring Papaya and Bacardi. Food wise, the ommellettes are filling (mushroom and fromage a favourite) and the pizzas thin, crispy and delicious. Good old Fish and Chips also makes an appreciated appearance. Recommended pub!
