We found pieces of cinnamon and cardomom pods in the sauce and the naan were actually cooked in the tandoor oven. The poppadoms and rice are complimentary too which we really appreciate after paying as much as $5 for a small serve of rice. It is not as large as a full grocery store, but there are two separate rooms and a wide variety of foods. There are plenty of packaged foods and spices and freezer items, but also some chaat type items from the restaurant, and a few fresh vegetables (notably including okra, which is a bit hard to find). It isn't hard to find something to buy. The restaurant is up a set of stairs. One could (and I did) shop at the store without even noticing the restaurant entrance; it is to the left upon walking in. It is a pretty basic fast food place. The chole bhatura (chickpeas and fried bread) was satisfying. The bread had some nice herbs in it, but the chickpeas weren't quite as nuanced in flavor as the best iterations of this dish I've had. The samosa was quite large, but mostly potatoes and a tad salty for my taste. The menu wasn't huge, and I wasn't left with a burning desire to try it all. Also, I found it odd that the place is named "mirchh masala", but they don't actually have any menu items with stuffed or fried chili peppers (i.e. mirch), as some Indian places do. I chose Klay because of the two previous 5-star reviews and we were not disappointed. This family owned and run BYO restaurant has been in business for 1.5 years. It has eight 2- and 4-person tables inside (that can be joined for groups), plus outdoor seating. Indian music is playing at a good volume, and although ambiance was maybe a tiny bit lacking (it doesn't claim to be a fancy dining venue anyway, so it's ok), the food and the service more than made up for it. The menu has a ton of choices, so we needed some help. "Mom" was brought over and pointed out some favorites and specialties, explained the taste and spiciness scale, and patiently answered our questions. For our group of five, we settled on two starters: - Amritsari Machhi (deep fried marinated fish) - Chicken 65 (deep fried chicken, then coated in a sauce with tamarind flavor - not an actual ingredient), four mains: - Malai Kofta (veg) - White coconut chicken curry - Chicken Jhalfrezi (memories for one in our group growing up in...London!) - Lamb Korma, two bowls of absolutely delicious Kashmiri Pulao rice, and some Naan breads. Naan is a tad expensive, starting from $4.50, but you must try the spinach and cheese naan ($5.50)--I could eat just it alone! It's also worth mentioning that A Night in India do some great specials. If you go during lunchtime from Wednesday to Friday or for dinner Sunday to Thursday, you can get a meat curry with rice, naan, a pappadum and a can of soft drink for only $17.50! With the exception of Indian Kitchen in West End, this would be the cheapest curry I've found in Brisbane. A Night in India is great for groups, as they're flexible with splitting the bill and it's BYO. However, I did attempt a hot date here once and I've gotta say, it didn't quite have that ambiance. It was fine, but the decor is a little tacky. It's better suited to students in search of a cheap, but delicious meal, close to campus and just a wander away from the RE. Perfect!
