The Schweinshaxe and Eisbein are especially fine, the former exploding with molten fat from perfectly crisped skin. I rate Max W. at five stars for doing what it does so well, but to enjoy it--indeed to eat there at all--you must adhere exactingly to its Unwritten Laws. Despite its working man's prices and an interior looking like a down-at-heel Studentenkneipe this is a feinschmeker (gourmet) restaurant and must be treated as such. You need to reserve by telephone at least several days in advance, and humbly offer them an appealing number of diners (ideally either four or six: they have only 25 places at tables and four stools at the bar and must be ruthless about maximizing their yield: do not even think of asking for a table for one; they will simply refuse (reserve--and you do still need to reserve--a seat at the bar). Persons wandering in without a reservation hoping for a table--and especially tourists without German--are treated with fine forthright traditional north-German rudeness: "Nein! Nein! Weg! Weg!" (Sometimes in chorus.) This is a performance--once one has actually received permission to eat there the staff are warm and charming in a rough, Hannover, sort of way--but, I guarantee you (having suffered this) that you will not recognize the tone of your expulsion as a jolly act when it occurs, nor will you notice the ironical pleasure the regulars are taking in your fate, because you have just become a familiar--three or four times an hour--and well-loved part of the evening's entertainment. This is the same particularly German form of quiet rejoycing at the artful humiliation of others that has made Sven, the cruel bouncer at Berlin's legendary Berghain dance club, a figure of national affection. Those refused entry at Max W. become a special German sauce on the already superb food. And whether you end up as a diner or back on the pavement with your head spinning, either way you have had a perfectly authentic Hannover experience.

Finally, one evening, as I walked around the city center, undecided as to where I wanted to eat, I walked by this place again, and this time, I opted to go in and see if I could get a table. While I wanted to sit in the Biergarten in the back, nothing was available, so I opted for a table in the front, next to an open window. I ordered a cold Hefeweizen and perused the menu. The waitress spoke good English and I washed her recommendations, and she said that the ribs were a favorite. I was ready for something different than German food for a change, and I know the Germans can make some good ribs, I took her advice and ordered the ribs- I asked if I could get them without their "barbecue sauce" and she said of course. And I am glad I did- German barbecue sauce is very different than American barbecue sauce! The ribs were spectacular! The fries hot and crispy! This place was so good that I came back the next day to meet friend for dinner. Now I have added yet another favorite restaurant to my Hannover list!

Like every other larger city of the western world Hannover has a wide variety of hip and modern food and beverage concepts to offer. Every now and again I like to settle for the traditional simplistic approach of regional dishes that can be found at the Gaststätte Kaisers in the Nordstadt. Besides the, in my opinion, best curry wurst (a large sausage with curry sauce and fries) in the northan hemisphere and really good schnitzel with a variety of sauces to choose from, steak and more delicious dishes the seasonal menus vary from asparagus specialities in autum to chanterelles in Summer and kale with smoked sausages in winter are also worth a try. The Kaiser's combines the best of two worlds combining the vibe and setting of a traditional north German pub, with british influences (huge whiskey selection, fish and chips with malt vinegar...) and a traditional German kitchen without beeing to fancy nor shabby. The place is very lively and the service is very friendly and flexible if you like to modify your orders, which I love doing.

All food, everywhere else, now comes as a disappointment. The food we make in our own kitchen seems sad and lifeless in comparison to the hot magic they are making over at Pier 51. I cannot express to you how good our experience really was. The view over the Maschsee was stellar. The service was perfect. My wine glass was refilled as if by ghosts. My broken German was easily understood. The other customers were all relaxed and quiet -- probably because they were rich enough to afford Pier 51's prices without worrying about making rent. This place is not cheap. We had a gift certificate and we went positively apesh*t. We ordered 3-course meals, plus 2 appetizers, 1 bottle of wine and a dessert. It ran us €115 euros. That's just under $150 American dollars, or the price of approximately 32 half-liters of Beck's beer (if you decide not to go to Pier 51 and instead go to a German soccer bar to get hammered with your bros).
