One of the largest hospitals in the area, but may feel under-appreciated or underused with the Manchester Royal Infirmary only a short drive away, which is the largest hospital in the country by the number of beds. The hospital was redeveloped in the early 2010s which was much needed, and the refreshed look still feels modern to this day, it is fairly easy to get around the hospital and find where you need to go, the environment is clean, and the staff are friendly, with overly good standards. I did find a huge contrast between certain areas and wings of the hospital, even down to the modern features and comfort of the chairs, but it is the NHS... you can't expect too much. It's surprisingly easy to get through to someone at the hospital's switchboard, and I was passed to my consultant's secretary and appointment line in a matter of minutes, which is how it should be, while other hospitals can be much more inconsistent. Mobile Signal in the hospital is weak, likely down to equipment interfering with the connection. 4*

Fast forward a year I barely walk. On heavy duty dosage meds with not a cat in hells chance of returning to work. Thanks Mr Gill Orthopedic surgeon and your sloppy scalpel I will NEVER forgive your incompetence and the devastating effect it has had on me Steer clear people of Salford. Not the first mistake at this hospital nor the last. Clearly being from Salford seems us lesser mortals and not worthy of competent care Gill is a Liability. Despite complaining he remains in post. Oh my God incompetent surgeon left to reek havoc and destroy lives without anyone to stop him

It's one of the most respected research and teaching hospitals in the UK and it's chest clinic one of the best (with some of the country's best professors working within the units). I was there last year (once in the chest clinic as it happens, and once in A&E) and given the usual negativity NHS hospitals receive, my experience was nothing but highly positive. The care and understanding and expertise of the staff is outstanding in what can often be unnerving places. It's a sprawling site and facilities are improving all the time (they're currently building a large health campus on site). I think the majority of people having to visit here would be equally positive.

After being in labour…read moreand stuck on the triage ward, I was transferred to Delivery when my waters broke and had fantastic care and support from the midwives there. I had a long an exhausting labour (with epidural) all night and finally gave birth to my daughter at 6.20am on the Sunday morning in Nov 2008. I could not fault the midwife or the student midwife who looked after me, they were amazing! If it wasn't for them, I probably would have wound up in theatre, having my daughter by C-section. The doctor who delivered my daughter (she had assisted delivery) was equally fantastic, and very professional. They looked after us so well and made coffee and toast for us after I had showered and freshened up after the birth. Sadly, I can't say the same for the ward I was on after having my daughter. The put me in a 4 bedded ward opposite a 15 year old who had the most annoying boyfriend and about 50 familiy members come to visit at visiting hours. Having had no sleep for 3 days and an exhausting labour, all I wanted to do was curl up and get some sleep, but I coudn't. The midwives on this ward basically left us to it, and after 1 night's stay there, I'd had enough and discharged myself and my daughter. Needless to say, we both recovered at home very well and the community midwives were very pleased with our progress.

I waited over six hours for a simple blood test and never received the results. As bad as that is, the conditions in the waiting room were far worse. There was wet vomit on the floor, dried and fresh blood on chairs and tiles, and the staff barely attempted to clean any of it. They completely ignored basic CDC/OSHA infection-control standards--no proper PPE, no hospital-grade disinfectant, no isolation of contaminated areas, and no biohazard procedures for bodily fluids (which are considered potentially infectious materials in every credible medical setting). The staff in the waiting area seemed untrained and unengaged accept to make jokes about the patients..People in obvious distress received no assistance, basic triage didn't exist, and questions were answered with confusion or incorrect information. The lack of professional etiquette, urgency, or even basic competence was shocking. A medical facility should be clean, safe, and staffed by professionals who understand patient care. This place was the opposite. It felt like a butcher shop disguised as a healthcare facility--and the patients are the meat. And honestly, a real butcher shop would have handled blood and sanitation far better. If you value your health or safety, avoid this place. What I witnessed was unsanitary, unsafe, and far below any acceptable medical standards.

There should be a better care plan pathway as this one isn't working. I never thought i would say this but this is the downward spiral of the nhs

But I had to go back on the 14th Dec to A & E once I'd had my bloods done and assessed I A and E it was only a matter of 3 hours then I was allocated a bed on observation ward then treatment began. 24hrs later I was moved to the correct ward in an a room allocated bed. This was a vast improvement which not only assist ing my physical but mental well being in itself. I have being a long term patient in and out on a regular basis been given the best care available by the doctors and nurses at Whiston and can only commend and praise the work and the treatment I have been given. Whilst I was in A&E I must admit I did see a lot of footfall come and go wanting treatment which could've been acquired and was more suitable for the walk in centre locally at the Millenium or seen a doctor if they had rang the surgery to make and emergency appt. The life and capacity is being square out of A&E due to these factors. I would like to give a huge thankyou to the drs and nurses at Whiston Hospital. Whom along with treatment have not only shown me their care but with compassion and empathy also. Hats off to you Whiston Hospital you can only work with what you've got but within 6 months I myself have experienced a vast and impressive improvement. Thanking you Donna McLean

Poor care, my mother says she would rather die than go to Whiston!!…read more The place is new and soulless, clean and tidy, but no care, staff talk between themselves, while you stand waiting to ask for help. They managed to lose my mothers belongings, broke her hearing aid, they could not understand how important a hearing aid is, thinking shouting at a deaf person is the only answer. When you ask for info the Drs answer was I have not seen her, the nurse pulled out a scrap of paper from her pocket!! what happened to records? To telephone you need a password, but you have to go in to get the password, the system is just not right. Car parking a joke, no info on the web site, even parking attendants telling you to park on the grass, taxi ranks full of cars parked in the wrong place. Not enough disabled bays, so cars just dumped all over the area. WH Smiths is so expensive just to buy water or sweets, at least Costa Coffee was ok. All in all It was very disappointing, when the care is so bad for patients they say they will not press the care alarm again, it must be bad. Some nurses were lovely, but it was never the same staff each time you went so confusing and upsetting for elderly people. Come on Whiston, do some fine tuning, make the patients feel cared for, and improve the food, terrible compared to Newton. Its not only medicine that gets people better.
