Muldrow Opry - Da band!

Muldrow Opry

Day four of our road trip to San Diego, stop 2…read more Arriving in Van Buren, Arkansas to visit my grandma for a few days, Sarah and I were sure to find ways to spend our time getting out instead of just sitting around and looking at dusty photo albums. As soon as we arrived at the cute little two bedroom condo that my grandma has lived in since the move from the farm, I opened the Southwest Times Record to find a listing of what to do over this cold weekend. What caught my eye was a long list of band notices. There were bands playing at churches, at bars, and a few Opry houses around the area. So I took a shot in the dark and that's how we found the Muldrow Opry in Muldrow, OK. This is a converted cinder-blocked and white washed retail space, situated next to a florist, and across from the corner gas station. Blink and you'll miss it, as the sign is handwritten and posted right by the highway marker. Music is advertised as being performed between 7 and 10 in the evening, and we showed around 7:30, fashionably late for us Yankees. Expecting the band to just be starting, we found them already in full swing. We signed the register, bought some raffle tickets, and declined the food buffet of pulled pork and hot dogs with all the fixin's. A cup of coffee for grandma though, we took them up on that. The Muldrow Opry made our day, and I think made my grandma's year. She was near to singing along with every song, and her feet were tapping tapping to the beat. It wasn't long before she picked her favorite performer, the man who looked most like her late husband in the green shirt playing the slide guitar. We had to leave before the first raffle, and were saddened that we were giving up on the chance at some sweet prizes like: a two liter of A&W Root Beer, a hand knit teal hat, wood carved horse, a pair of gloves, some watercolor, and other grand prizes. Love the Opry! Tip: call ahead and they might let you sing your favorite bluegrass, gospel or classic country song... so long as they know the tune, and chances are, they do.

We were greeted by the owners and the staff for the evening, and given a few options for dining locations as we didn't have a reservation and they had a large group being sat just after us. We loved that had an opportunity to dine at a table in the "jail" section. The restaurant was packed but it still felt warm and cozy for our date night meal. We had multiple, fantastic servers taking care of us. I didn't get to capture the appetizer, the spinach and artichoke dip, but it was literally the best I've ever had and I even make my own! It was full of artichokes and spinach and it was in an amazingly light and fluffy white whipped dip served with fresh made breads onsite and pretzel bites from a local vendor. Our cocktails and wine were amazing. Then our main course arrived! One of our waiters was new and said the filet was the best he'd ever had, and he wasn't wrong! We travel often and dine all over, these filets were cut and prepared to perfection! We took his recommendation to add the blue cheese and blackened topper and it was phenomenal! The steaks literally cut like butter and melted in your mouth! Charred Pittsburgh style, medium rare and heavenly. Placed on a bed of mashed potatoes that blended in the warm blue cheese and asparagus, this meal made me feel like I was at NYC or Chicago's top steakhouses! If you live local or just passing through like us, don't miss this experience!!! It was absolutely delicious and at the top of my list for best steaks!!!
